Class PS Newsletter Term 1 2019 First of all, hello and welcome to Term 1 of Prep! We hope you and your child have started to adapt to the busy schooling routine. It is certainly hard to believe that we are into our second week of school already, but it's heads down, tails up and we're off and running! I would like to thank you for your support so far. The children in PS are so enthusiastic and have had a very calm and settled start to the year. Please remember, my door is always open if you would like to chat briefly, or please send me an email so we can arrange a time for more lengthy discussions. Below is an update on what we will be doing this term, which is jam-packed with lots of hands-on learning and play! I encourage you to keep this Class Newsletter handy so you can refer to it throughout the term. Teacher: Michele Stewart Email: [email protected] Important Dates Community BBQ: Tuesday 12 th February 3pm Prep Parent Reading Information Session: Thursday 14 th February 9am School Disco: Friday 15 th March 5:30pm 3 Way Reporting: Tuesday 26 th March from 3pm Prep Yr 2 Easter Bonnet Parade: Wednesday 3 rd April 2pm (Students will need to make an Easter Bonnet prior to this parade at home and bring it to school with them on the day to wear at the parade). *Please keep an eye out for emails and/or notes with details regarding prep parent information sessions on Camera Words and SSP) Curriculum focus what we will be working on in class this term Content Assessment English The first term of Prep is all about indulging students into the wonderful world of literacy. Students will be focussing on: Oral language development, speech sounds, name writing, rhyming words; memory; blending and segmenting words, exposure to familiar words reading and writing; decodable reading, handwriting through Casey the Caterpillar, involvement with quality literature and and Learning the concepts about print (left to right, use of pictures, top to bottom) Students will retell an event or events from the weekend, with focus on beginning writing behaviours and illustrations. Students will orally retell the event to peers. Maths Students will sort and classify objects according to size, shape and colour. Students will explore number and place value including counting, subitising and identifying quantities. Students will group objects based on familiar characteristics and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of number. Science Students will use their five senses to observe the weather. They will learn that we can record our observations of the weather by using symbols and drawings. Students will explore the daily and seasonal changes in the local environment and understand that weather conditions are not the same for everyone in all places of the world. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of weather by selecting appropriate clothing for different weather types and explaining their choices. HASS Completed over Terms 1 and 2, students examine families, relationships, rules and how we fit in to the community. We will also be talking about celebrations and how these differ between communities. Students will identify celebrations and retell a celebration. The Arts Students will participate in visual art and will explore colours, lines, shapes and textures through different mediums. Students will create a self portrait (linking with HASS) Technology Identifies how common digital systems (hardware and software) are used to meet specific purposes. Students will be assessed through a collection of work. Specialist Lessons School begins at 8.45am. Please ensure students arrive prior to the 8.45am bell so they can have an organised start to the day. QAR Readers: Begin Monday of Week 4. Your child will take home a folder that contains a picture book (each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). Inside the picture book is a selection of comprehension questions. It is expected you read the story each night with your child. The folder and book are to be returned the following day, even if you did not complete the story. Please set your child up for success by completing this with them. Further instructions are located inside the folder. Library Borrowing is Tuesday. A library bag is required to borrow books. Parade: Mondays at 2.30pm in Girrawheen Place. Everyone is welcome. Music: Tuesday 12-12:30 and Wednesday 2-2:30pm. PE: Friday 2:00pm 3:00pm.
