His energetic and passionate performances have drawn praise from many and have earned him the moniker "pianistic firebrand" from The New York Times after his standing-room-only performance at Carnegie Hall. This course will be a close look at events, personalities, and decisions which affect our lives today and still give rise to controversy: the effect of WWI and the rise of international dictators, the depression; and the birth of Social Security. Art Conversations Tuesdays, Sep 16–Oct 21 ● 10 AM–11:30 AM

This course will present several ideas on how to think about art. We will focus on painting as an art form, as a language, as a system of smaller components, and the set of rules that makes art work. Discussions will include how to see art and some principles of art such as basic color theory, texture, line, volume, and emotion. Local artists will bring in their own work to aid in the discussions. To enhance the discussion, a couple of field trips will be scheduled; one to local galleries and a second to visit artists in their studio.

for a short time, but left to raise a family. Machelle picked up her education and earned a degree in Liberal Studies from Butte College in 1996. In continuing her education, she focused on art, taking art classes at Butte and attending workshops both locally, regionally and out of state. She has been active in local art groups, has had one-person shows, installed many art shows, and has an ongoing curiosity as to how art influences the viewer.

Bio(s): Phil Elkins - Phil is from East L.A., was drafted and sent to Vietnam as a medic. He moved to Chico in 1975 where he made Senor Felipe's Salsas that were available at most health food stores across the country for 25 years. He does a radio show called "L.A. Sounds" on KZFR on Tuesday evenings and has written four books on growing up in East L.A. and surviving Vietnam.

Beginning iMovie for Mac Monday, Oct 13 ● 9 AM–12 PM

Want to learn how to make movies on your Mac? Bring your Apple laptop to class and learn how to make Hollywood-style movie trailers from the iMovie templates using your own pictures and video clips. You'll also learn how to use your own pictures that you've organized in iPhoto to make a movie with background music and a narrated slideshow, complete with snazzy transitions and titles. Through observation and the use of binoculars and field guides, members have the opportunity to learn to identify birds in their natural habitat. We will learn to observe the birds using accepted birding etiquette. The sites we visit in Chico and the surrounding area are public and accessible any time of the year. 1954 and married my high school sweetheart, Sharon, in 1957. We have four children, 6 grandchildren, and 4 great grand children. I attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and received a BS in Mechanized Agriculture in 1960. I later attended Chico State and majored in Physical Science. After receiving my Teaching Credential, I taught in the Chico Unified School District for 33 years, mostly 6th Grade. My interests are: bird watching, woodworking, wood carving, biking, running, yoga, photography, and spending time with family.

Body and Brain Fitness Mondays, Oct 20–Dec 01 ● 10 AM–11 AM

The class provides physical fitness exercises for older citizens that target both the upper and lower body. Flexibility and improved strength are the key segments of this program. Additionally, we will do various cognitive exercises to improve our memory and help us develop techniques and strategies that will result in improved cognitive functioning. Mental exercise combined with physical exercise for a full body conditioning regime.

Book of Genesis, Part I—A Leisurely Reading Tuesdays, Sep 02–Dec 09 ● 1 PM–2:30 PM

We will read and discuss the first 25 chapters of Genesis, including the creation stories, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, the Tower of Babel, the journeys of Abraham, and the marriage of Isaac. We will treat the text as a human document, reading it as literature with the aid of videos, cartoons, and poetry. We will also look at how the text has helped shape Western Culture through its use in the Jewish and Christian traditions, and we will explore how the questions raised in the text can guide our own spiritual deepening.

Born in Southern California, Dennis has served churches in Maine, New Jersey, Illinois, and Virginia. He and Sydney chose Chico as the place in which they hope to retire.

Book of Revelation Wednesdays, Sep 03–Dec 10 ● 10:30 AM–12 PM

The Apocalypse, or Book of Revelation, is one of the most engaging and disputed books in the Bible. It has inspired great works of art and music, and it has also fed social upheaval and speculation about the coming end of the world. This course will ask what the Apocalypse is, why it has played such a volatile role in Western culture, and how it continues to be meaningful to contemporary readers. The course consists of discussion aroung twenty-four video lectures of 30 minutes each from The Great Courses company. Optional course book available for $10.

Brains In Motion Thursdays, Sep 11–Oct 16 ● 9 AM–10 AM

Are you in your wonder years? Wonder where my keys are? Wonder what I went upstairs for? This is a sign that our "batteries" are becoming drained over time. Jumpstart your brain with activities to improve memory skills, eye-hand coordination, balance and strength. Standing is not required, but we will be moving and playing. Come join the fun and activities that stimulate the mind and body as a whole.

Bio(s): Marcia Carter - My husband and I moved to Oroville in 1980 with our two children. We started a family

business in 1983 in Oroville which prospered until 2010. I have been a teacher and physical education coach for 40 years. I love working with children with special needs and sensory processing disorders. From those experiences I learned that as we become seniors we need to exercise our bodies and brains just as we did when we were kids. I created "Boomers and Up" to help seniors exercise their brain and bodies to mentally prepare for tackling the tasks of daily life.

Local experts will be invited to address issues related to urban development in Chico and Butte County.

Chico Trees Thursdays, Sep 11–Nov 13 ● 9:30 AM–11:30 AM

This course consists of 5 field trips to outstanding collections of trees in the Chico area. Each trip will cover about 25-30 trees. The leaders will discuss uses, origin, history, problems, advantages and disadvantages of specific trees. The first trip will meet in front of Bidwell Mansion at 9:30am on Sept 11 and finish at 11:30am. Each trip involves strolling and standing along paved or gravel walks for 2 hours. Rain cancels. The fifth trip is an all-day tour to Jonesville on Oct. 9.

has visited botanical gardens and universities all over the world studying plants, and he served as a visiting professor in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Zealand, and Western Australia.

Gerry Ingco - Gerry is a graduate of the UC School of Forestry, Berkeley, and spent his professional career

as a ranger for the CA state Parks and US Forest Service in coastal parks and Sierra forests. He has led many tree tours and plant walks for CSU, Chico and the Mt. Lassen chapter of the California Native Plant Society.

An exploration of 13 quintessential American films, viewed from historical, social, political, and cinematic perspectives. I clerked for Justice Mosk on the California Supreme Court and was an Assistant General Counsel for the California ALRB before joining private law firms, practicing labor law, doing appellate work and general civil litigation. In addition to my law degree, I have an M.A. in American History from Rutgers University, NJ.

Cracker Barrel is a lively group experience similar to a town hall meeting. New subjects are discussed weekly which prompts feedback from the class participants. All subjects are open to discussion. Each speaker uses about 10 minutes and then responses are asked for. Class meets all year round with great attendance.

Barrel is her prime motivator for joining the OLLI program six years ago. In 1989, she authored the book "For Mothers of Difficult Daughters," a self-help book for mothers of adult daughters. It is a prime example of her continuing interest into changing human behaviors, their causes and remedies.

This course is designed to show the use of the various controls on a digital camera. Emphasized will be those controls dealing with exposure and the effect they have on creating good photographs. Each week a different control will be used. During class time the students will take photos and the class will conclude with the photos viewed on a TV. A MUST requirement is a digital camera that has controls for Auto, P, Av, Tv or S and M. The camera must also use a SD memory card and a blank one should be brought to the first class.

Explorers: Jungles to the Antarctic Thursdays, Oct 09–Nov 13 ● 9 AM–10 AM

We will learn about early explorers in the Isthmus of Panama before the building of the canal. Many men and women have braved the Amazon Basin from unknown women to Teddy Roosevelt and those who swam and kayaked the Amazon Basin. Do you already know how to make movie trailers and slideshows in iMovie on your Mac? In this class you will learn how to edit your video clips to make a movie with transitions, titles, and background music. We will cover some of iMovie's advanced features, too, such as green screen, picture-in-picture, and cut away. Come to class with a project in mind and with all of your pictures in iPhoto and movie clips in either iPhoto or iMovie. Movies are a great way to showcase your family events, travel, holidays, etc.

This course is based on the book by Betty Edwards, "Drawing On The Right Side of The Brain." The 1979 book incorporates the new knowledge of how the brain works to help people learn to draw what they see. Using exercises to tap into the spatial side of the brain, students will learn to shut down the verbal side of their brain that tells them they can't draw. This allows the student to "see the way an artist does" and draw what they see. Though Susan is not an artist, she has successfully taught 11 year olds to discover drawing.

We will then examine the human body as an example of this miraculous complexity, how it sustains us and how the historical advances in medicine and civilization have allowed us to quadruple our lifespan. Finally, we will look at the diseases that still afflict us, the ongoing advances in medicine that are giving us more control over these diseases and how we can be proactive consumers of health care to increase our chances of living a long, healthy life.

Organic Farm Tour Monday, Oct 13 ● 10 AM–12 PM

Massa Organics Farm was born out of the need to STOP SPRAYING POISON ON OUR FOOD. We converted to organic rice production, built a straw bale house, learned to grow almonds without the aid of chemicals, planted cover crops to provide biomass and nitrogen, replacing chemical fertilizer, incorporated pigs into our cultivated and natural areas on our property, and we purchased a small flock of Dorper sheep to graze the weeds in the almond orchard. The Peace Education Program (PEP) is a media-based educational program, created by The Prem Rawat Foundation. This course is designed to increase your ability to see interesting photos in everyday life. Emphasis will be on learning and applying the basic rules of photographic composition. Reiki drumming is a healing technique that combines the benefits of sound vibrations, reiki energy, and journeying in order to harmonize and balance our bodies, minds and spirits. In Session 1, we will discuss reiki drumming: what it is, how it works, and what its benefits are. Then participants will experience a journeying activity to help them clear and release blocks that interfere with achieving their goal. In Session 2, there will be two journeying activities: one to heal our ancestors and the patterns we have inherited that no longer serve us, and another to heal the earth.

Kathy Oscamou - I was born and raised in Oakland, California, and moved to Butte County with my

I began meditating on and off about a decade ago, but it wasn't until I joined a meditation class through OLLI that it "took" and changed how I look at and live my life. The practice of meditation will forever be a part of who I am now.

For several years I have delivered a series of enrichment lectures on cruise ships. My topic is world affairs. Each illustrated lecture includes geography, history, politics, current events, and things to see in one of ten regions. Bio(s): Chester Cotton - Chester Cotton was born in Los Angeles, CA. He received bachelors and masters degrees at San Jose State University and a Ph.D. at the University of Oregon. While spending most of his university teaching career at California State University, Chico, he has also visited on the faculties of the University of Guam and Texas A&M University. Dr. Cotton has visited 100+ countries on seven continents. Now retired, he lives with his wife of 44 years in Wyoming and California and lectures on cruise ships several times a year.

Huston Smith is our guide for a study of the world's religions. His lucid book helps us discover how much the world's religions have in common and where they sometimes take different paths. Terry Hunt, the peer leader for the course, is a retired Episcopal Priest, and where possible will invite others with expertise to make presentations about their chosen world religion. Smith's book takes us through Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and closes with a chapter on some of the world's Primal religions.

Imagine the following opening lines for a play: "You aren't going to jump out that window, are you?" or "Where did all this money come from?" Imagine the possible storylines that could be played out in ten minutes. We will examine the basics of writing a play including structure, character, conflict, dialogue. Prompts will be offered to stimulate your ideas, and participants will be encouraged to share their work. There may be an opportunity for some of the plays to be staged at a future OLLI event. Beginning and experienced writers welcome. Meet first two weeks, then every other week.
