On Saturday April 15th 2017 prospective buyers will have the unique opportunity to buy from an exceptional collection of over 100 classic tractors. The collection comprises a wide range and variety of classic tractors including some of Harry Ferguson’s earliest models including Ferguson Brown, Ford Ferguson, Ford Nan, Ford Jubilee’s, a Ferguson prototype from the foundation of the Coventry Factory at Banner Lane, David Brown’s, Crop Masters, 2D, 880, Super Dexta, Ford Funk, Deut, Porsche, Fordson’s among others and many implements including belt pulleys, hitches and top links.
This unique collection of classic tractors has been assembled and lovingly maintained over the past 40 years by John Flynn. John’s love of tractors developed as he grew up on the family farm in Co. Sligo in the West of Ireland. In the mid 1960s John emigrated to the UK to work in the construction industry. Within a short period John had machinery and employees working on various main-line water, sewerage, road and gas works as well as house building across the UK.
John however never lost his interest in farming and during this time started buying and restoring various classic tractors. In later life John was based in London and the United States where he continued to maintain and add to his tractor collection. John sourced tractors from throughout the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, France, Scotland and Ireland among others. Some of these tractors came from other dedicated collectors, mainly the Porsche models, andthey had spent many years building their collections including the years prior to John starting his.
John has lovingly maintained and looked after his tractors which have been constantly stored in a dedicated premises to ensure that they are protected and looked after as they should be.
Due to a lack of space and increased business interests in Asia, after 40 years collecting, John is now selling his vast collection. Take this opportunity to buy some of the rarest and best examples of vintage tractors to come to market.

The MF 97 was based on the Minneapolis Moline tractor. They were manufactured for Massey Ferguson Inc, Detroit by Minneapolis Moline in Minnesota USA, and were produced from 1961 to 1965 using the impressive 8.3 litre 6-cylinder water cooled engine diesel engine and five speed transmission.

Here is a fine example of a rare tractor the Massey Ferguson Super 90. The Super 90 was a US built tractor that was in production from 1961 to 1965. Fitted with the reliable A4/300 4-cylinder Perkins power plant it boasted 75BHP. These tractors were known as a large utility vehicle but were also available in a row crop version.

This tractor is a 1943 Ford Ferguson Funk based on the Original N Series tractors. This is the 6-cylinder petrol version with the Ford flathead 87HA engine. These conversions were marketed by the Funk aircraft company of Coffeyville, Kansas. Hence the name Funk. This is a rare tractor which is also fitted with the Sherman special purpose transmission which in conjunction with the standard gearbox gave six forward speeds and two reverse. The Sherman unit is mounted in front of the normal transmission with the shift control to the left side of the tractor just below the steering box.

It is believed this is one of a small number of tractors that were built for test purposes in America in the early 1940s around the time of the split between Ferguson and Ford. After the war these tractors were shipped to UK for field testing and from these designs came what is known as the legendry little grey Fergie.
Most notable differences on this tractor are as follows: The bonnet is slightly longer, the rear hydraulics was all brass bushed as opposed to the steel UK versions, the gearbox casting are steel and shaped differently, the inner gearbox had the facility to carry trembler coils. The engine was from the Continental Corporation and had a unique in- house made manifold which allowed for the addition of water when the motor reached operating temperature which in turn produced hydrogen and increased power output by 20%.

This is a 1950 pristine example of the R22 tractor. These tractors were built in Uhingen, Germany from 1949 to 1952. Allgaier were taken over by Porsche soon after this model was introduced and the Porsche 2-cylinder engines were used to replace the Kaeble unit. This tractor has the single cylinder water cooled Kaeble engine. It also has the continental style hitch. Imported from Germany some years ago and restored, it is believed to be the only one of its kind in Ireland.

Here we have a well presented, fully restored AP17. It also has a fully functional PTO driven winch. 1950 saw the start of production in Uhingen Germany of the famous Porsche powered Allgaier AP17 tractor. For its time it was a surprisingly modern looking tractor and inexpensive vehicle compared to its competitors. The 2-cylinder Porsche air cooled engine produced 18HP. With its light weight body and five speed transmission sitting on 24 inch rear wheels it was a versatile little tractor. The portal axle in the rear, the hydraulic clutch and both the engine and transmission blocks being made from aluminium combined with the air cooled engine instead of water contributed significantly to its success. This is unique opportunity to own this rare sought after tractor.

Following the successful 1933 demonstration of his Black Tractor, Harry Ferguson spent the next couple of years overcoming certain problems with the hydraulic systems. In 1935 these difficulties had been resolved and a deal was struck by David Brown where by they would build the machines at their Huddersfield works and Harry Ferguson Ltd would sell them.
The first 550 Model A tractors were fitted with Coventry Climax L engines giving them around 20HP. After this Coventry Clima were retooling and so David Brown bought the patterns and made the engines themselves.
Every engine was tested for power output before leaving the factory and the machinery was carefully rust-proofed before receiving a coat of Ferguson Grey paint. The price of each tractor was initially set at £224 with a basic range of implements to go with it being £26. By contrast the contemporary Fordson cost only £140 and this, along with the depressed state of the economy, meant sales were comparatively low. (1350 were built between 1936-1938). Despite an aggressive sales policy and even though 15-20 machines were being made each week, unsold tractors began to be stockpiled at the factory by 1937. Differences of opinion over how to increase sales led to a parting of the ways between Harry Ferguson and David Brown.

Harry Ferguson took the Ferguson Brown No 722 complete with a range of implements to America in October 1938 and Eber Sherman arranged for Harry Ferguson to demon-strate the Ferguson Brown tractor to Henry Ford Senior. So impressed was Henry Ford that he and Harry Ferguson concluded a deal with a simple handshake, a gentleman’s agreement. The outcome of this agreement was the Ford-Ferguson 9N.
This tractor is one of the early models with the Coventry Climax engines. It was bought new by Mr John Murphy of Taughblane Road, Hillsborough, Co. Down in early 1938 to replace two horses. It was in everyday use on this farm until 1952 when it was replaced by a newer Ferguson tractor.

In a hand written letter from 1985 the nephew and then owner of the farm of the late John Murphy states that in July 1945, while this tractor was being used to pull a reaper that the late Mr Harry Ferguson entered the field and asked permission to drive a few rounds with the tractor. He did so with great satisfaction of all present.
This tractor is a unique piece of Irish history and is one of the rarer finds being that it is the early model. It comes with its original logbook from 1938. Included with the tractor will be the above mentioned handwritten letter and lots of interesting photos of it working down through the years. The tractor is in good condition and recently had a complete engine overhaul to leave it running as sweet as the day it left the factory nearly 80 years ago.

Here we have a very early model Ford Ferguson 9N. This tractor has the smooth rear axle and sits on 32 inch rear wheels. These were built from 1939 to 1942 and after some modifications and improvements were relaunched as the 2N in 1942. The 9 represented the year in which they were launched. The 9N was the first tractor to incorporate the three point hitch and rear power take off. They were made in Dearborn, Michigan, USA and originally sold for $585.

Many people may also be unaware that Porschetractors have an Irish connection. An Irish civil engineer working on the Caledonian Canal in Scotland was searching for an alternative to water cooled tractors that froze in the cold winter temperatures and would also run well in warm
summers. His search led him to the Allgaier tractors that proved to be reliable and he contacted Porsche to secure the rights to assemble these vehicles in Ireland. He succeeded in doing so in Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois selling the tractors across Ireland, the UK, and even as far afield as Iceland.
