DESCRIPTIONIn January 2012 operations at South Plant were discontinued and the infrastruc-ture made redundant. The proposed project will result in the demolition of theredundant furnaces, with the infrastructure being demolished to slab level. Theexisting foundations are to remain to enable the possible re-engineering of thesite for alternative light and/or heavy industrial uses.

ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONIn order to receive environmental authorisation, Metalloys, a division of Saman-cor Manganese (PTY) Ltd is required to undertake a basic assessment (BA)process in accordance with Environmental Impact Assessment RegulationsGNR.543 of 2010. The activity associated with the proposed decommissioningproject is listed in the GNR.544 of 2010, Activity 27(iv): “The decommissioning ofexisting facilities or infrastructure for activities, where the facility or land on whichit is located is contaminated”.

SASOLBURG. - To assist four local mu-nicipalities to speed up the process of basicservice delivery as part of the Infrastruc-ture Development Programme (IDP), theExecutive Mayor of Fezile Dabi District,councillor Moeketsi Moshodi launched aR3 million sewerage connection projectfor about 2400 sites in Gortin, Zamdela.

The project expected to be completedin 2014, is to make sure that people haveaccess to basic toilet facilities that promotedignity and healthy living conditions. Inhis statement, during the launch at Sa-khubucha Secondary School, onAugust 8,

Cllr Moshodi said the aim is to assist the localmunicipalities to speed up the pace of basicservice delivery as part of the district wide IDPprogramme. Before touching on the recent re-sults of the by-election won by the ANC inward 9, hosted by Tlokwe Municipality, CllrMoshodi said the number of peoplewithout ac-cess to toilets decreased to 1, 7% in 2011 and66, 77% in 1996. Access to toilet facilities hasincreased by 80, 3% in 2011 compared to 62,7% in 2001 and 54, 2% in 1996. This is a signthat our municipalities are performing well asfar as improving access to electricity, runningwater, refuse removal and toilet facilities isconcerned. The mayor thanks the residents of

Metsimaholo Municipality for their pa-tience. “Despite the mushrooming serviceprotests, we are doing our best to make aremarkable progress,” he says.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - For the first sixmonths of the year (ended 30 June 2013,)ArcelorMittal South Africa reported a lossof R123 million compared to earnings ofR106 million for the half year ended 30 June2012.

However, the company recorded an im-provement in operating and financial resultsin the second quarter of this half year, drivenmainly by clients rebuilding stocks and a re-turn to normal operations at the Vanderbijl-parkworks after a fire caused production dis-ruptions in February. Repairs to the Vander-bijlpark steel making plant were completedin record time leading to the lifting of theforce majeure on May 9.

ArcelorMittal SA’s earnings in the secondquarter rose to R147 million compared to anearnings loss of R270 million in the firstquarter.

Ms Nonkululeko Nyembezi-Heita, ChiefExecutive Officer of ArcelorMittal SouthAfrica, commented in a media release thatArcelorMittal has reason to be pleased with

the second quarter’s strong rebound in ear-nings, which was underpinned by a return tonormal production at Vanderbijlpark, cou-pled with stable operations at all the othermills. “It is also most gratifying that the posi-tive trend in safety performance continuedwith a first half lost time injury frequencyrate of 0.66 and reaching an all-time recordof 23 months without a fatality.”

Steel production for the six months was246 000 tons lower at 2.5 million tons, whilesteel sales for the period totalled 2.1 milliontons compared to 2.5 million tons at the endof June 2012.

“Our business improvement efforts arebeginning to yield tangible results with costsavings coming through in a number of keyareas. Saldanha has made significant energyrelated management gains, resulting in sa-vings of R127 million from reduced energyconsumption. Performance at all plants isimproving as a result of an intense focus ongetting the basics right,” says Ms Nyembezi-Heita.
