DIRECTIONS:1. Lightly grease a 9x9 inch pan and line with

waxed paper, smoothing out wrinkles; set aside.

2. Place the semisweet chocolate and 1 teaspoon of the canola oil in the top of a double boiler over just barely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching. When the chocolate is melted, stir in 1/4 teaspoon of the peppermint extract. Pour the melted chocolate into the prepared pan, and spread evenly over the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle half of the crushed peppermints over the chocolate layer. Refrigerate until completely hardened, about 1 hour.

3. Place the white chocolate and the remaining 1 teaspoon canola oil in the top of a double boiler over just barely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching. When the chocolate is melted, stir in the remaining 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract. Pour the white chocolate directly over the semisweet chocolate layer; spread evenly. Sprinkle the remaining crushed candy over the top and gently press in. Refrigerate until completely hardened. Remove from pan; break into small pieces to serve.

Flint — Anyone who saw the first half of Lake Fenton’s varsity

boys basketball team’s first game this season saw an

extremely entertaining first half of basket-ball. And during it, the Blue Devils

looked mighty

impressive. Under first-year head coach Josh Fox, the squad used an uptempo style, frustrat-ing the host Kearsley Hornets for most of the first 16 minutes of the contest. The Blue Devils pushed the ball upcourt and rarely had to settle into much of a half-court offense. The results were a pretty impressive 43-29 halftime lead. However, the Blue Devils weren’t able to maintain that tempo in the second half,

struggled trying to keep the lead with its halfcourt offense during the second half and lost a tough 67-63 verdict at Kearsley High School on Tuesday. The halves were stark contrasts. Lake Fenton shot a sizzling 18-for-33 with just five turnovers in the first half. In the second half, when they were trying to maintain their lead, the squad hit on just 6-of-28 shots from the field. First off, the Eagles had three strong squads at the meet, head-lined by the No. 2 Division 4 squad, New Lothrop, as poten-tial foes. Finally, the Eagles opened the season with an assembly dual, meaning a good portion of the first dual was competed with the Linden High School student body in attendance. The Eagles took some lumps in the matches, losing to Bay City John Glenn 52-22, but then

Linden wrestling open season vs. challenging foes posted a stronger score against New Lothrop, a 47-29 loss. “We knew going into this meet it was going to be tough, but that’s what we wanted,” Linden varsity wrestling coach Kyle Summerfield said. “We wanted opponents that we had to wrestle well to beat. “It’s a really great experience for the kids and the student-ath-letes in general. It’s really fun to wrestle in front of a student body whether you are home or away. It’s a great atmosphere. I know these guys were excited

Bauman inducted into Greater Flint Athletic HOFBy David Troppens Mark Bauman had a suggestion by his older brother, Doug, that he may want to join the Flint Ain-sworth cross country team during his junior season. That suggestion changed the course of Mark Bauman’s life. Bauman, who owns Bauman’s Running and Walking Shop located at 1473 Hill Rd., has since run in 50 Boston Marathons, every single Detroit Free Press Marathon, every single Crim 10-mile race and every Volkslaufe 20K race. He has helped organize other running events and has helped others with their run-ning careers through his business. Recently, he was given an honor for his notoriety to the Flint area’s running world — he was inducted into the Greater Flint Athletic Hall of Fame. “My older brother thought it would be a good idea to run cross country my junior year,” Bauman said. “Yeah, it was pretty quick. I was hooked.”

Bauman, 69, was honored along with his class of inductees, which included Fenton’s Ivan Williams, Julie Roberts-Decker and the 1995 Lake Fenton softball team. “It’s extremely special,” Bau-man said. “What a privilege it is. I am so lucky to have had this hap-pen to me. It’s a great group and to go in the same year as Olympian Geena Gall-(Levoe), that’s really impressive to me.” Once hooked on the sport, he at-tended Flint Community College (now Mott Community College) and his track coach, Paul Griffin, encouraged him to run in the Bos-ton Marathon. The 1970 version was his first. It began a run of 50 straight Boston Marathons, the longest current streak, only second to Maryland’s Ben Beach’s streak of 52 years. “I don’t think I ever thought about it,” Bauman said. “When I was a young age I don’t think I ever thought about competing when I was this old. But once I got older,

I wanted to see how long can I go.” His fastest time at Boston was 2:30:32 in 1975. But just like any runner, he was hoping for better. “I hoped to go quicker,” Bauman said. Bauman, a Flushing resident, finished the 2019 race in 6:31:32. “I have been extremely lucky I haven’t had any injuries keeping me from competing,” Bauman said. Of course, a lot of people in the tri-county area know Bauman for his business. It didn’t start with a typical building. “I started it out in the trunk of my car, taking shoes to races,” Bauman said. “Eventually it became a busi-ness. “It was a slow start. It wasn’t good getting loans to start the busi-ness. I built my inventory as I made money. It was a slow process, and a slow gradual build-up.” Bauman still loves running, and expects to be at the 2020 Boston Marathon.

to finish and close the games. We want to be uptempo, but at the same time we have to be able to slow down too when we have the game in hand. We’ll learn that and we’ll get better.” Kearsley jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but once the Blue Devils tied the game at 10-10 on a short hoop by Francis Senter, the rest of the first half was dominated by Lake Fenton. That hoop sparked a 11-6 run that capped the first quarter. A post layup by Matt Turgeon gave the Blue Devils a 19-16 lead after one quarter.

By David Troppens Wednesday was the first day of wrestling competition for many squads in the state of Michigan. The Fenton varsity wrestling team was one of those squads who started their season on Wednesday, facing Ferndale and Detroit Mumford. The Ti-gers defeated Mumford 72-12 and lost a tight 41-33 verdict against Ferndale. The Tigers opened its match with Ferndale well, earning pinfall wins by Jackson Cairnduff (285), Kendra Ryan (103) and Ethan Radloff (119) within the first four matches of the bout. However, Ferndale was able to respond from that point and eventu-

ally earn the win. Leading just 35-33 entering the final bout, Ferndale won it with a pinfall. Against Mumford, Ella Turnblom (112), Evan Harper (135), Dylan Bev-erly (145), Luke Zywicki (189) and Cairnduff (285) earned pinfall wins. For the day, Ryan, Kyle Dunfield (130), Garrett Langford (160), Zy-wicki and Cairnduff posted 2-0 re-cords while Mason Canterbury (140) won his only match. Turnblom, Ra-dloff, Adam Barcome (125), Harper, Beverly, Mason Church (152) and Evan Firby (215) each had a varsity win.


By David Troppens The Holly varsity boys swim team faced a strong Lake Orion squad and lost a 127-56 verdict against the home team. The Bronchos had one individual first. Logan Molzahn earned it in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.18. Another strong individual perfor-mance was posted by Drew Hignite

who took second in the 100 breast-stroke (1:16.35). All three relays took seconds. Mol-zahn, Hignite, Zachary Rockafellow and Dean Krueger earned one in the 200 medley relay (1:57.75), while Jake Osborne, Emilio Perez, Krueger and Rockafellow took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.32).

By David Troppens A year ago, DeWitt’s varsity girls bas-ketball team went 23-3 and advanced to the Division 2 state quarterfinal. The Panthers remain a strong squad this season as well. The Holly varsity girls basketball team competed against DeWitt on Tues-day and played well against the squad for three quarters. However, Holly was outscored 22-6 in the second quarter re-sulting in a 54-21 loss. “They were very good,” Holly var-sity girls basketball coach Ben Varner said. “I was really happy with how we competed. The score doesn’t show it, but we played pretty well. The second quarter is the one that killed us. The rest of the game was not bad and we com-peted against them.” Holly trailed 11-4 in the first quarter but the 22-6 second quarter blew the deficit to 33-10 at halftime.

Delgado improved to 2-0 with two pinfall wins by earning a second pinfall win in his second match. However, New Lothrop won each of the next four matches (three by pinfall) to take a 22-6 lead. The Eagles fought back.
