I felt like I was knowledgeable about the atrocities, but this tourtaught me so much more. I am appalled at how we as human beingscan feel so righteous and superior that we are willing to take thelives of others in an effort to cleanse and maintain power. Mybreaking point was at the end of the tour. A video giving the accountof man who helped save some mothers and their children broke myheart. It is harder to accept the plight of the Jews and othersaffected by the Holocaust because i think about what I would haveto do as a mother to survive if history were to ever repeat itself.

Reflection

All things must come to an end. Our time in D.C. has beeninformative. Not only have I learned more about my cohort members,I learned more about our education system and the office/agenciesthat work to provide resources. I only wish that as a highereducation practitioner, there were more relevant meetings pertainingto my work. I tried to glean useful information out of each session weattended, but a separate track (or time away from the big group)focusing on agencies in the D.C. area such as NASPA and CASwould be information that could be used directly in the majority ofthe Higher Education cohort member's careers. I understand thismay change with each cohort.

Of the sessions we attended, I found the religious panel to be mostimpressive. I was able to access more information aboutScientology, which I can use in the classroom. I also appreciated theconfidence and gusto with which Deacon L'Homme spoke. I thoughtof a colleague that would have thoroughly enjoyed a conversationover coffee with him.

I don't see any future impact from this trip on my work as an

Page 47: Claudettes summer institute reflection

educator, but I do see the influence this may have had on the P12members in the cohort.

I have learned from this experience, that it is a challenge travelingwith a large group of peers for an extended period of time. It takesflexibility and collaboration. I have learned I miss my truck. I wasable to navigate the Metro with relative ease, but there is nothing likehopping in your own vehicle and going where you need to go. I alsolearned that life after dissertation may not involve working at aninstitution of higher education and that I may want to keep myoptions open to looking at agencies like AACC.

You could almost cut the party lines with a knife from agency toagency. It was clear, even though some tried to present themselvesas neutral (for the sake of the presentation I would assume), whichside they were supporting. The conservative right always concernsme especially when weaving religion into the picture of politics andeducation.

In all, it was informative and interesting. I realized how much I didnot know and what I need to learn (using NCES as a majorresource).
