A brief history of my dad’s life

• Born in Rome....although for some reason I always thought he was from Villa Santa Maria

The locals say the rock above town looks like Capri

Villa Santa Maria

• In fact he only spent a few years during the war there, but his family is from there

• And he is surely the only physicist ever to emerge from a town that has otherwise produced mostly chefs

• There was clearly a strong female influence in his early years...


Back To Rome

• After being told that he is too smart to be an engineer he studies physics with the big guns

• But then he met the love of his life...

• and starts his tempestuous migrations


Off to Copenhagen

• He takes his first chance to explore the world and takes off to Copenhagen

• My mom gets a little depressed during the long winters

• And my dad plays a lot of chess in between his ruminations on general relativity


Back in Rome

• Child number one is born: my brother Luca

• He stops pondering the secrets of general relativity and settles on his lifelong fascination with particle beams


Then comes number 2

• I was born in Rome in 1968

• And my dad succumbs to the changing fashion...


First Trip to US

• Not content to stay in Rome, he decides to whisk us off to Berkeley in 1968!

• In between anti war rallies he engages in the popular pastime of go carts...

• He listened to the Mamas and the Papas


There he has the third child

• Finally lands a daughter

• who apparently thinks she is the little mermaid


Back to Italy

• The US stay is short lived and they head back to Frascati: Accelerator Central

• Fortunately for us they live in Villa Aldobrandini

• Where we have a grand old time while he discovers the head tail instability


Then Off to England

• He takes the family to Abingdon so he can work a the Joint European taurus

The English Period

• There we are forced to wear ties to school

• and encouraged to respect the law...


Back to Italy again...or so we thought

• After having one too many tea breaks, he decides to head back to Frascati

• We again enjoy life in Villa Aldobrandini

• But soon we are off to the US again, this time on the east coast

We become a respectable American family

• While my dad works on Isabelle at Brookhaven National Lab

• We rapidly lose our english accents and can go to school with regular clothes..


Christmas in Stony Brook

• My dad receives the usual illuminated manuscript for Christmas

• And occasionally pretends that he is about to exercise...


Then the west coast beckons

• And some of us head off to UCLA, others to Palo Alto and Portland

• Note the lifelong fascination with cameras....


Then the family grows

• and grows...

• and grows...


And Grows....


So that’s the history...what else do you need to know?

• My dad’s favorite saying:

“if you’re going to do something do it well”

• He certainly lived by those words, but his presentation shows that I’m still learning...


Names my dad goes by

• My mom refers to him as the PLUMBER

• because he’s always traveling and occasionally shows up at home for brief periods.


He dabbles in esoteric matters

• I’ll let him explain this one to you...


Little Known Facts:

• He has won a faux oscar

• For predicting who would win

• by using the guesses of the NY Times...


But most importantly...

• He has gained the love and respect of his family, friends and colleagues

• And what could be more important in life?
