Pathways Institute Kicks off Spring Term

The Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning® at Landis Homes is ready to kickoff their spring 2014 course offerings. The event will be held in the West Bethany Chapel on Thursday, February 6 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

This preview event will include the introduction of each instructor present, including a short synopsis of their course offering for the term. The courses, which run from March to May, are open to all Lancaster County residents who are age 55 years or above. There is a nominal registration fee which includes enrollment in up to five courses per semester, as well as a per course option. There are also day trips and concerts in addition to the regular classes.

Just a few of the 40-plus new topics being offered are: CANADA: The Stranger Next Door; The Susquehanna River and Lancaster County; Eisenhowers as Neighbors; John Piersol McCaskey: Educator, Civilian, Reporter; Three Poets I Like to Talk About; Science of Physics; Let’s Tour Our Solar System; Water; History of Polio; Creating Sculpture; Spanish for Seniors; Decision Making Workshop for Seniors, Spirituality and Aging; What Did Keynes Really Tell Us About Fighting Recessions and Depressions? and many more. Also offered are visits to galleries, historical sites and cultural centers or exhibits, concerts and other special events.

New this year, in celebration of Landis Homes 50th Anniversary year, is a special class and bus tour titled, “Landis Homes, a 50th Anniversary Celebration, 1964-2014: Stories and History” as well as a bus tour of ten historical early sites within the area. It will include an exploration of the Landis Valley and the farm that became Landis Homes as well as the neighboring homes, school and community.

The farm house at Landis Homes was built in two stages. The west side of the house, built by B&C Long in 1770, is the current location of the Farm House Guest Room. Benjamin, Jr. and Anna (Hershey) Long built the east side of the house in 1804. 2 Landis Homes • Winter 2014

Looking Back & Looking ForwardBy Larry J. Zook, President/CEO

February 18, 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of Superintendent and Matron George and Grace Leaman welcoming Henry and Mary Weber as the first residents of Landis Homes. Over the past 50 years more than 3000 people also became residents. As Frank Enck, one of the founders challenged from the beginning, Landis Homes continues to seek “to honor and enrich the lives of aging adults and families in a community of Christ-like love.”

2014 also marks the 20th anniversary of my joining the team at Landis Homes, and the seventh anniversary of my appointment as President. Over these years I have been influenced by, and developed deep appreciation for, many residents and staff and volunteer team members who live our guiding values of Joy, Compassion, Integrity, Stewardship and Community through ‘Serving one Another.’

As we prepare to celebrate our 50th Anniversary, I believe it is helpful not only to remember back to God’s work among us these past 50 years, but also to look forward to the future as well.

I'm reminded of comments made by founder Orie Miller at the first meeting of the Retirement Home Planning Group in November 1961. He asked, “For what is God giving us these additional years?” He answered his own question: “Certainly for a purpose, and youth and old age together should find ways to make these extended years meaningful."

We are a community both where team members seek to serve residents well, and a community of residents who are actively serving others. This sense of being a

serving community is reflected in the active involvement of many residents who are serving both as volunteers here at Landis Homes and in the broader community.

Over the years, Landis Homes residents have also demonstrated support for Landis Homes serving beyond the residential community. Our first Adult Day Services program opened 25 years ago in 1989, the Children's Learning Center 10 years ago in 2004, and Landis at Home seven years ago in 2007. Our swimming pool serves the broader community as we offer exercise and therapy classes, and we offer various support groups and the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning as well.

In 2011, Landis Homes created Landis Communities to support the on-going vitality and strength of Landis Homes, as well as to explore new options of affordable living and providing services at home, while being open to creatively partnering with others. In 2013, Welsh Mountain Home affiliated with Landis Communities and Steeple View Lofts opened in downtown Lancaster.

As the founders of Landis Homes did 50 years ago, we today prayerfully seek God’s direction for the future, and eagerly anticipate continuing to find ways to seek to make these extended years meaningful. Thank you for choosing to be part of this journey within the community at Landis Homes and beyond.

Grace and George Leaman, Matron and Superintendent of Landis Homes who served from 1963-1977. As was recorded by A. Grace Wenger in her 1994 book, The First 30 Years, George reminisced, “Those were happy years. One day Grace looked up from her typewriter and said, ‘I really enjoy this work. Even if I didn’t get paid a cent, I’d enjoy it just as much.”

Two New Directors BeginPatricia “Tricia” Schlegel joined

the team as the Director of Residential Living in November. Tricia provides oversight to the services and programming available to residents in cottages, apartments and suites in partnership with other

Landis Homes departments.

Prior to joining Landis Homes, she was employed as an RN in the emergency department of Ephrata Community Hospital and worked in critical care at Lancaster General Hospital. She also serves as the congregational nurse at Ephrata Church of the Brethren and holds a certification as a Faith Community Nurse.

She has a varied educational background including an associate degree in Fine Arts from the PA College of Art and Design. She has a diploma of nursing from Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing and a BSN from Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA.

Tricia and her husband Ron have four children: a son, Kyle, and daughters, Lauren, Nicole and Megan. They reside in Ephrata. In her free time, she likes to read, listen to music and spend time with her family.

“I am looking forward to building relationships with residents, families and team members and walking with them on their journeys,” says Tricia.

Darin Horst began working in the position of Director of Maintenance in late December 2013. In this role he is responsible to direct and manage maintenance, grounds and security operations on campus.

Darin lives with his wife, April, and young daughter, Grace, in Lancaster city, where they worship at RiverEdge Fellowship. He also helped to start an urban youth, shared living and discipleship center in Lancaster called Urban Lights.

Darin says, “I enjoy taking in the unique architecture of our city as our family takes many walks in the evenings.”

Darin joined Landis Homes in 2010 in the painter position, and later served as Maintenance Coordinator and then as Maintenance Supervisor.

His work experiences prior to coming to Landis Homes include receiving training in automotive technology, as a crew leader at a construction company, serving with Eastern Mennonite Missions and as owner of a painting contractor business.

“I enjoy interacting with so many nice folks here at Landis Homes,” says Darin. “I look forward to getting to know many more residents and staff.”

General Store and Gift Shoppe Raises $20,350 for

the Caring FundWhether you need a quart of milk, a can of soup, a

grocery gift card, a candy bar or a greeting card—the General Store in Harvest View Annex and Dogwood Commons Gift Shoppe are the places to go! In addition to shopping for necessities, those who use the stores contribute to the Caring Fund. In 2013, net proceeds of $20,350 from the two stores were added to the Caring Fund to assist in the care for those who have outlived their financial resources.

Our good neighbors at Oregon Dairy give a 10% discount on regularly priced items. The Gift Shoppe and General Store then price and sell the items at the regular price. It is that 10% difference which creates the net proceeds--pennies at a time.

Thank you to the 68 volunteers who shop, price, stock shelves, and clerk to provide this valuable service. Thank you too, to all who shop at the General Store and the Gift Shoppe and finally a BIG THANK YOU to Oregon Dairy and the Hurst Family.

Landis Homes, in partnership with Mennonite Foundation, offers you a way to

Team Member Milestones HonoredBy Sandy Smoker, Director of Human Resources

Approximately 360 persons gathered at Yoder’s Banquet Facility on November 7, for the annual Team Member Banquet. A total of 74 team members were recognized in achieving milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 or 40 years of service.

During the evening program, Larry Zook, President, reflected on the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration of Landis Homes as “An Enduring Heritage.” Board chair John Eby spoke of future plans, with the focus on “An Expanding Mission.” This year’s giving project highlighted the ministry of Welsh Mountain Home, an affiliate of Landis Communities. Team members donated gifts of household and personal care items as well as cash and checks.

Nancy Pawling, pictured, was recognized for 40 years of service. Rachel Lutz and Anna Mary Burkholder were each recognized for 35 years of service. Nancy has worked in Healthcare, Personal Care and currently in Landis at Home. Rachel’s roles have varied from Activities Director to Nursing Assistant, and she currently serves as Supply and Consultant Services Assistant. Anna Mary Burkholder has served all of her years in Dining Services.

Sincere thanks to the award recipients and all team members who honor and enrich the lives of those we serve in a variety of ways every day!

Brubaker to Display Artwork An art reception on February 4 will feature the art of local photographer Paul Brubaker,

who will be showing his work at Landis Homes for the first time. The exhibit will consist of a variety of photographs Paul took for a seminary course project called, “Churches of Lancaster.”

Brubaker, of Lancaster, has been a teacher of photography for over 24 years. He currently teaches both silver-based and digital photography at Lancaster Mennonite High School. He also has teaching experience at Gonzaga College, a Jesuit school in Washington, DC.

Earlier in his career he worked as audiovisual producer and photojournalist at Mennonite Central Committee, as a freelancer, and at Sojourners magazine, Washington, DC. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI, first learning photography at Rhode Island School of Design.

Paul says Henri Cartier-Bresson, W. Eugene Smith, and Sebastiao Selgado are some photographers he most admires.

Recently Paul is studying toward a Master of Divinity degree at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Lancaster campus. As a “capstone project” he is working at photographing all the Mennonite churches in one city, Lancaster. He has captured images of 15 churches so far, with several more churches still in-process. This show is a first look at photographs made from those explorations.

Paul says, “I especially love documentary photography, which is concerned with telling the truth, from the photographer’s point-of-view.”

The opening reception, to which the public is welcome, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, in the Harvest View lobby and galleries at Landis Homes. In case of inclement weather a snow date is set for February 20.

The exhibit will continue to be on display through April 2014. For more information, visit www.landishomes.org or call 717-381-3550.
