CLEAN ENERGY SMART MANUFACTURING INNOVATION INSTITUTE ROADMAP: 2017-2018 FACTSHEET The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) is one of five Institutes in the Manufacturing USA network funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Manufacturing USA brings together industry, academia, and federal partners to increase U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and promote a robust and sustainable national manufacturing R&D infrastructure. CESMII aims to radically accelerate the development and adoption of Smart Manufacturing (SM)—the business, technology, infrastructure, and workforce practice of optimizing manufacturing through the use of engineered systems that integrate operational technologies and information technologies (OT/IT). CESMII’s focus is the development of advanced sensors, controls, platforms, and models to help companies of all sizes across a variety of manufacturing industries realize the benefits of SM. To improve the productivity, performance, efficiency, and ultimately the global competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, the CESMII Roadmap: 2017–2018 outlines strategic objectives, an R&D Portfolio, and near-term action plans for advancing SM Business Practices, Enabling Technologies, SM Platform Infrastructure, and Workforce Development. SM has the potential to transform the U.S. manufacturing sector into an engine for open innovation and skills development, facilitating sustainable real-time business improvements. To facilitate implementation of new manufacturing solutions and integration of operational technologies and information technologies (OT/IT), CESMII will accelerate early-stage R&D in ways no company or industry can do alone. The CESMII R&D Portfolio will simultaneously address knowledge gaps and advance innovation in SM technology, processes, and workforce. ROADMAP: 2017-2018 FACTSHEETThe Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) is one of five Institutes in the Manufacturing USA network funded by the U.S.

CESMII Integrated Strategies

Optimize Manufacturing and Increase Energy Productivity

To facilitate widespread SM integration, develop a clear and compelling SM value proposition; address and mitigate business risks; and provide strategies, tools, and best practices for SM integration and cyber security.

Key Initiatives: Assessment and Benchmarking •Integration • Workforce Alignment

The CESMII Roadmap: 2017–2018 includes the following content for each of the four CESMII strategies:

Strategic Objectives — the desired outcomes of CESMII activity, which should inform project selection

R&D Portfolio — priority needs for collaborative R&D projects, studies, and assessments (the Workforce Development section does not include this content)

Near-Term Action Plan — a timeline of activities for the next year to guide CESMII’s initial efforts, with color-coding to reflect the need for coordination across CESMII’s four strategies
