Things will be picking up at the Bay leading into another busy summer. We are extremely happy to report that roofs on the restrooms on the beach have been replaced. (See page 3). We are saddened that it took nearly ten years but we believe that these repair delays will not occur in the future. The City continues to work on other major repairs that were identified by the Friends and we expect completion of all of them by early 2016. They include: Replacing all the air conditioning units in the visitor center Replacing the lights in the parking lot Replacing the orientation video Repairing the faux rock Continuing the rock fall mitigation Conducting a Reef Study We are continuing to negotiate with the City on the future operation of Hanauma Bay with the goal of insuring that the neglect we have seen over the past decade is never repeated. The City has begun making the necessary changes in the finances at the Bay that were required by Judge Kay’s Federal Court Ruling in 2002 and brought to their attention by the Friends. We still are seeing problems with the FY2016 Budget and are addressing those concerns with the City. We are looking to help expand the offerings of the Education Program at the Bay for the betterment of visitors’ experience. We will have more to report on this in the future. I am sad to report that Mimi Baker found it necessary to resign from the Board for personal reasons. Mimi has been instrumental in pushing forward the Friends’ efforts with the City and will be missed. We wish her the very best. Clean Up

In February, FOHB held the first Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Clean Up of 2015 in partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation and Malama Maunalua. During the short two hours, volunteers picked up over 1,000 cigarette butts, dozens of plastic bags, and more garbage that would otherwise have ended up in the ocean. The volunteers also spent time to help beautify the preserve. We would like to thank all the dedicated volunteers and Hanauma Bay docents and employees who gave their time to beautify the Bay. And we would like to thank Canon in advance for their commitment to help us. Please mark your calendar for the next Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Clean Up scheduled for May 9th at 9:00 a.m. Visit friendsofhanaumabay.org or malamamaunalua.org for more information.

Nice …..

Legislative Update

Bill 78 has become Law. Now interest accrued by the Hanauma Bay Fund will be remain in the Fund. We are pleased that the City Council has codified keeping interest in the fund although we’re disappointed that the fund will not be reimbursed back to the court order. Several financial issues remain and we will continue to work with the City to rectify them. Please see our web site www.friendsofhanaumabay.org for information about SB284 to protect coastal lands on O’ahu’s North Shore.

Meeting with DPR Board

On January 29, 2015 the DPR Board held their meeting at Hanauma Bay. The major point of discussion was, of course, the Bay. Friends President Sid McWhirter thoroughly briefed the board members on our concerns. Several board members were taken on a tour of the facility. It was an eye opening meeting for several board members. We look forward to continuing to meet with the DPR board to improve operations and conditions at the Bay.

A Good Idea

Mayor Caldwell’s E Paka Kakou initiative to have community volunteers help maintain the City’s parks is a good idea. The Friends of Hanauma Bay have been doing just that for more than twenty years. While Hanauma Bay is a unique entity within the park system, the Friends know that each one of the parks is special to the people who use and care for them. We’ve learned that working with the Park’s Department can at times be challenging and would be happy to share our experience and offer advice to any group of volunteers working to keep their park beautiful. Volunteer groups that have questions about our experience can contact us at [email protected] What are the differences that make Hanauma Bay unique? There are many … Hanauma Bay is not a park – It is a fully protected Nature Preserve The facility is dedicated to preservation and education about our ocean resources The Bay can be financially self sufficient having its own fund – no need for taxpayer $$$ Use of the Fund is mandated by a federal court order Expectations for visitor behavior are designed to protect the environment and visitors Nature Preserve staff are on site at all times to ensure visitor’s compliance and safety Every day a lot of people, some who are unruly, crowd into a relatively small area Staff consoles and assists visitors when a tragedy occurs Staff must possess a high level of customer service, public relations and interpersonal skills

Moorish Idol Are you sure we're species related? My tail assembly is much more forked than yours. And look at the vertical stripe adjacent to our tails. Mine is much thinner at the bottom. Then there's the end accent stripe on our bottom fins. Mine is white and yours looks like faint blue neon? Say, is that a 'mating' display? Are you looking to replace me?
