Purpose: The purpose of the Clean Water Act is to reduce and eliminate pollutants and toxic substances so that surface waters could meet standards necessary for human sport and recreation.

Before the Clean Water Act was put into effect the United States experienced environmental catastrophes like the Cuyahoga River fire in 1969. The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio was so polluted that the river caught on fire.

Because the Clean Water Act has been enacted pollution has been strictly regulated so that another catastrophe can never happen again. The water quality in the United States has improved making it healthier for us and our environment.
