1 SCOPE

This method statement describes the step by step procedure for the cleaning and maintenance of the products out

of the Sikafloor® product range.

2 INTRODUCTION

Industrial floors, types of contamination, requirements on hygiene standards etc. will vary according to the branch of industry. The food processing industry, for example, has different floors and types of contamination than are found in the metalworking industry or for exhibitions. Even within a particular branch of industry there are a number of different applications which require various cleaning methods. The size of the surface area is normally the deciding factor in whether cleaning is performed manually or by machine.

The cleaning methods applied are influenced by

- the nature of that particular industry; - use within such a branch of industry; - the size of the area to be cleaned; - the condition of the industrial floor; - types of contamination; - the level of contamination; - the accessibility of the area to be cleaned; - the hygiene requirements.

3 CLEANING AGENTS

The choice of cleaner and cleaning method depends primarily on the nature of the contamination. Essentially, all

alkaline cleaning agents are suitable regardless of whether they are sodium or potassium hydroxide-based. Tensides

(surfactants) and hypochlorite additives do not normally have any negative effect on Sikafloor® Systems.

To remove lime scale, hydrochloric acid or acetic acid (max. 10%) can be used, for instance. However, subsequent

rinsing with clear water is essential.

Cleaning agents containing high concentration of ammonia or nitric acid can lead to turbidity or discolouration in

the floor, but without attacking it.

Methacrylic Sikafloor® resins react sensitively to alcohols. Caution must also be exercised with all organic solvents

when applied neatly or in high concentration. Aromatic and homogenised hydrocarbons must not be used.

4 CLEANING EQUIPMENT

Combination scrub-and-pick-up machines are increasingly being used in the wet cleaning of large areas. They

replace time-consuming wet wiping with a bucket, mop and press or wet scrubbing with a disk machine and water

suction device. Scrub-and-pick-up machines can be differentiated into

panels or sample applications on concrete substrate.

- stand-in machines,

- and ride-on machines.

These cleaning machines are available in a variety of widths, convenience options and price levels.

Contra-rotating three-disk machines have proven to be useful for this purpose. The constant change in the angle of

incidence of each and every bristle means that all uneven areas and deeper structures are cleaned from all sides,

instead of just two as in the conventional technique.

However, a device with a rotary nozzle is recommended. These devices are height-adjustable, enabling an optimal

result to be achieved by adapting the height to the roughness.

Properly sealed and undamaged surfaces can normally resist the stresses even of a high-pressure jet (operating

pressure approx. 100 - 130 bar). The actual pressure of the water jet on the floor naturally depends on the jet form

that is set and the distance from which the surface is sprayed, and in usual practice is much less than the operating

pressure. Care must be taken with edges and at joins!

5 DESCRIPTION OF THE CLEANING CONCEPT

5.1 INITIAL CLEAN

Firstly, you should sweep the area to remove any loose debris.

An inspection of the area should then be undertaken to see, if there are any areas that require individual treatment

such as oil spillages or scuff marks from shoes or fork lift tyres. Application of industrial cleaning detergents to

these areas, either as supplied or diluted with water, then given some agitation and allowed to dwell for 5 to 10

minutes will help to remove these.

The floor area should then be cleaned using a mild alkaline cleaner or the heavier duty alkaline cleaner. Method of

Pre-use Inspection:

The floor should now be inspected to ensure that it has been cleaned to your required standard and that all soiling has been removed.

5.2 PRECAUTIONS

If you will now be placing equipment, storage racking, goods, furniture, filing cabinets etc. on the floor, then every

effort should be taken to minimise surface scratching and marking. Dragging of heavy articles across the flooring may

damage the surface. Fork lift trucks should be driven with care to avoid marking caused by wheel spin or slide.

Looking After Your Floor:

If the correct cleaning and maintenance schedule is used the appearance of your floor can be easily maintained. For floors with a high gloss finish it is acceptable practice to lay a sacrificial layer of an acrylic polish, which will keep the high gloss finish, give a hard wearing surface and have the ability to allow for the removal of surface scratches or blemishes, whilst still incorporating anti-slip properties. Once the above action or the decision to leave the floor as supplied has been taken, then the floor will require regular cleaning with either a neutral or mildly alkaline floor cleaner depending upon the type and level of soiling encountered. If you have decided to use a sacrificial surface polish on your floor then any visible wear can be overlaid with a fresh coat. However, if continual additions of coats are made then it may be necessary to occasionally remove the polish and start-a-fresh.

Spillages

Spillages of any liquid should be wiped up or absorbed and removed as soon as possible. Not only is this a responsible

action as far as Health and Safety is concerned, it will also help you to keep your floor in good condition. Once the

spillage is removed the area should be cleaned as usual with your standard floor cleaner. If a sacrificial coat has been

previously applied the floor should be inspected to see if this remains. If not, it should be reapplied as soon as

possible.

Remember:

Initial clean before use.

• Take care when installing equipment etc.

• Sacrificial polish if required.

• Regular cleaning with the right product and equipment where necessary.

• Clean up spillages.

And your Sikafloor® will give you years of hard wear and still look good.

6 HOW TO READ A CLEANING REGIME FROM DIVERSEY

Dust mopping is the most used

method to remove dust and loose dirt

using wet or dry disposable tag rags.

Wet mopping is the manual removal of

slightly adhering dirt using water and cleaning

agents.

Scrubber drying is a method to scrub the floor and

pick up the dirty solution simultaneously.

Wet scrubbing and wet vacuuming (indirect method), is a mechanical

and chemical method in order to remove adhering dirt. The dirty

solution will be removed using a vacuum cleaner.

Top stripping (indirect method) is the procedure (mechanical and chemical) in order to remove

old floor maintenance coatings. After a certain waiting time the dirty solution will be removed

using a vacuum cleaner.
