Cleft and Craniofacial Services Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health cleft and craniofacial team is a network of experienced physicians and healthcare professionals brought together by a partnership among Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health, LSU Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and LSU Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. This team of specialists develops a comprehensive, individualized plan of treatment for each child and meets on a regular basis to organize the specific follow-up appointments needed. They are nationally designated by the American Cleft Palate- Craniofacial Association and see the full spectrum of craniofacial disorders. In addition to coordinating all care, the team evaluates and supports each patient physically, emotionally and socially. All recommendations made by the cleft and craniofacial team will be discussed with the parents as well as the child’s pediatrician and other specialists involved in their care. Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health treats more than 100,000 patients annually; providing a full range of pediatric services for children across the state and beyond, including a 24/7 pediatric emergency room and more than 80 pediatric specialists. Laura Hetzler, MD, FACS is dual Board Certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. She received her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed an internship in General Surgery at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Loyola University in Chicago, IL. Dr. Hetzler then pursued advanced training in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by completing a Fellowship at University of California, Davis in Sacramento, with a focus on cleft lip and palate surgery. Dr. Hetzler is full time faculty and Associate Professor for LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans and is the Program Director for the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residency. Dr. Hetzler began building the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital Cleft and Craniofacial team shortly after her arrival in 2010 and is currently the team director for the clinic. Dr. Hetzler avidly participates in humanitarian missions around the world including China, Central America and South America for cleft lip and palate surgical teams. Laura Hetzler, MD, FACS is dual Board Certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Whitney Sutherland has an M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders/Audiology, LSU, Baton Rouge, 2004 and an M.D. in Audiology from Salus University, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania 2008. She Specializes in diagnostic evaluations of pediatrics and adults, hearing aid evaluation, selection and fitting for pediatrics and adults.

Michael J. Maginnis, DDS, MS, FACP, is a private practitioner from Baton Rouge specializing in Removable Prosthodontics. Dr. Maginnis is a 1971 graduate of Loyola University School of Dentistry in New Orleans and a 1973 graduate of the Prosthodontics program of the University Of North Carolina School Of Dentistry at Chapel Hill. Dr. Maginnis is a Diplomate to the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists. From 1973 to 2014, he was an active member of the East Baton Rouge Parish Cleft Palate Team and a consultant to the Louisiana State University Graduate Speech Department. In 2014, Dr. Maginnis was presented with the Louisiana Dental Association Distinguished Service Award for his years of service to organized dentistry.

Duane Superneau, MD is Board Certified in Pediatrics and in Clinical Genetics and is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He completed his internship and residency in Pediatrics at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Superneau also completed a Fellowship in Medical Genetics at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, Department of Medical Genetics. Dr. Superneau evaluates and tests individuals and families for possible genetic syndromes and disorders. He provides genetic counseling for his patients and their families to address causes, inheritance patterns, medical management, and recurrence risks for the genetic and non-genetic issues identified during the course of evaluation. Dr. Superneau will also discuss with individuals and families any concerns they may have about their family history, including the occurrence of birth defects and concerns about hereditary predisposition to cancer.

Justin Sowder, MD, received his education at the University of Arkansas for Medical Services, Little Rock, AR. He completed a residency in Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Utah, Division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Salt Lake City, UT, and a Fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Dr. Sowder is a member of the Triological Society, the American Rhinological Society, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. He is the author of eight articles on various topics related to Head and Neck Surgery in peer-reviewed publications. When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Sowder enjoys fly fishing, snow skiing, golfing, hiking, biking, and spending time with his wife, son, and their two dogs.

Roberta Carona Vicari, MD, FAAP is a Baton Rouge native who is committed to the advancement of children’s safety and wellness through community awareness. After graduating from LSU in Baton Rouge in Biochemistry, she attended the LSU School of Medicine. Then, upon completing pediatric residency with LSU at Earl K. Long, she served as a general pediatrician for 20 years. In 2002, “Dr. V” joined Our Lady of the Lake as the first Medical Director for Children’s Services. Under her leadership, Our Lady of the Lake developed its children’s services into Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Roberta is currently the Pediatric Division Chief at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and serves in multiple organizations. One can easily see how Dr. Vicari was honored as a “Master Pediatrician” by the LA Academy of Pediatrics (2014); still, she gives her husband, Frank, and their children credit for inspiring her to be faith-filled and an advocate for those in need.

Ashley Lucas, MD, FAAP earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, TX. She completed her pediatric residency at Tulane, Ochsner and University Hospitals in New Orleans, La where she was named Outstanding Pediatrics Resident in 1999. Dr. Lucas has special interests in early childhood, obesity prevention, breastfeeding, and ADHD.

Lori McBride, MD is a Fellowship trained pediatric neurosurgeon, received her medical degree from LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. She completed an internship in general surgery from LSU Medical Center and a neurosurgery residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) in Denver, Co. Following a one-year Fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the University of Texas Southwestern at Dallas, she returned to Denver to serve as an assistant professor in pediatric neurosurgery at UCHSC, where she remained until returning to Louisiana in 2005. She is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgeons, and is a member of several industry societies including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care, and the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons.

Michael Dunham, MD is a Pediatric Otolaryngologist at Children’s Hospital. Dr. Dunham received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, then completed his residency training at Tulane University Affiliated Hospitals. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Children’s Memorial Hospital at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Dr. Dunham has more than 39 years of experience in pediatric otolaryngology and when explaining why he chose this field of specialty, he stated, “I enjoy solving complex and challenging problems that affect the lives of my patients.”

Bradley Comeaux, DDS is a graduate of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. He completed his dental training at LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. Dr. Comeaux completed his residency in General Dentistry at LSU School of Dentistry and in Pediatric Dentistry at LSU and Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Comeaux has been involved in several research projects all aimed at the improvement of materials used in dentistry. Dr. Comeaux is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, and active member of the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and the Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentistry.

Kathleen (Kat) Corbin, DDS received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Louisiana State University in 2013. She attended LSU School of Dentistry, receiving her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2017. During her time in dental school, Dr. Corbin served on the Student Government Association executive board. She was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and C. Edmund Kells Honor Society, and received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Pediatric Dentistry and the Delta Dental Student Leadership Award. She continued her education at Texas A&M College of Dentistry’s Pediatric Residency Program, training at Children’s Medical Center and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Corbin is board-eligible by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and maintains active membership in many dental societies including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, and Louisiana Dental Association.

Rebecca Day, DDS was born and raised in Baton Rouge, attending St. Aloysius School and St. Joseph’s Academy. She then completed her degree in Biological Sciences with minors in Sociology and Chemistry at Louisiana State University. Dr. Day earned her DDS degree in New Orleans at LSU School of Dentistry where she was awarded membership to the C. Edmund Kells Honor Society and the Theta Kappa Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. She served one year as Secretary/Treasurer and one year as Vice President of her dental class. She then moved to New York City for three years to further her education in Dentistry. She completed a one year General Practice Residency at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York and a two year Pediatric Dental Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Harlem, New York. She served as the Chief Resident in her final year of Pediatric Dental Residency and completed a research project during her time in New York. Dr. Day has participated in several philanthropic duties including a dental mission trip to the Dominican Republic and a Dental Head Start Program in the Bronx. Dr. Day enjoys hanging out with her dog, fishing with her family, exercising, and attending LSU and Saints football games with friends.

Robert Delarosa, DDS is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is also a Fellow in the American College of Dentists. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, where he received the ASDC Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award in Pediatric Dentistry. He completed his specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, serving as senior chief resident. He has lectured extensively to many organizations and groups, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and (g)nathos. He is a published author and was the Chair of the Council on Clinical Affairs of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has served as the District V Trustee, Secretary-Treasurer, and currently holds the office of Vice President to the Board of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has also served in various leadership roles and holds membership in several prestigious state and national dental associations.

Johnnie Hunt, DDS is a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Fellow to the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.Dr. Hunt, a native of Morgan City, graduated from Morgan City High School, Louisiana State University and LSU School of Dentistry. She has completed a two-year residency in pediatric dentistry from LSU School of Dentistry in affiliation with Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. Brynn Lewis Leroux, DDS is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans. She then attended Medical University of South Carolina to complete a two year residency in Pediatric Dentistry, acting as Chief Resident during the second year of her program. A native of Maringouin, LA, Dr. Leroux graduated as Valedictorian from Catholic High School of Pointe Coupee in 2000 and continued on to study Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Throughout her educational vocation, Dr. Leroux has received numerous awards, scholarships, and honors. Dr. Leroux is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and an active member of the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, American Dental Association, Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Erin Maturin, DDS, owner of Ascension Children’s Dental, was born and raised in Franklin, Louisiana. She attended Louisiana State University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She then went on to LSU’s School of Dentistry in New Orleans to receive her dental degree, where she received the Chancellor’s Award, AAPD Predoctoral Student Award, AAO Interest in Development of Oro-Facial Complex Award, and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology Horace Wells Senior Student Award. While in school, she was a member of the C. Edmunds Kells Honor Society and was an Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor student.After graduation, she decided to pursue her passion in pediatric dentistry and completed a Pediatric Dental residency at LSU School of Dentistry. She won first place in the LSU School of Dentistry Post-Graduate Research Award for her research project on the effect of smokeless tobacco on oral cells. This research was recently published in the Journal of Periodontology in August of 2014.Dr. Maturin also received the Richard C. Pugh Achievement Award which honors the top 3 percent of all pediatric dental residents in the nation. She was one of 15 recipients in the nation to recieve this award in 2013. To stay on top of the latest industry news and developments, Dr. Maturin is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the Louisiana Dental Association. She has hospital privileges at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans to help with the Children’s Hospital craniofacial team. She will be attending craniofacial clinics in Baton Rouge and New Orleans and working with oral surgeons, plastic surgeons, ENTs and speech pathologists to provide care for these patients.

Katie McClendon, DDS received her Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in 2008. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from LSU School of Dentistry in 2012. During her time in dental school, Dr. McClendon discovered her passion for treating children. She continued her pediatric education at LSU School of Dentistry and Children’s Hospital New Orleans, completing a two-year pediatric residency program in 2014. Dr. McClendon is a board certified pediatric dentist. She is on staff at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. Dr. McClendon maintains active membership in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and the New Orleans Dental Association.

Paige Sigsworth, DDS graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Dr. Sigsworth then proceeded to LSU School of Dentistry earning her DDS degree. She completed her two year residency in Pediatric Dentistry at LSU School of Dentistry and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. Dr. Sigsworth is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, an active member in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and the Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentistry. She continues to stay abreast of the most current techniques as she regularly attends continuing education seminars and lecturers.

He then received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 2005. During his time at LSUSD, Dr. Yale was awarded the Pediatric Dental Award. Dr. Yale received his postgraduate training in Pediatrc Dentistry at LSUSD and The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Memphis, TN. He graduated from the LSUSD Pediatric Dentistry Program in 2007. Dr. Yale has a passion for dental missions. He has participated in dental mission trips to Jamaica, Guyana, and Mexico. In 2009, Dr. Yale opened Yale Pediatric Dentistry in Denham Springs, LA.Dr. Yale is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. He maintains active memberships in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association.

Stephen L. Sherman Jr., DDS is a native of Baton Rouge and a graduate of Catholic High School. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in 2000, Dr. Balhoff graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, LA in 2006 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. Balhoff went on to complete his Orthodontics Residency at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in June 2008. He has published both research and clinical orthodontic articles in the Journal of Orthodontics (2009) and Orthotown (2014) magazine, respectively. Dr. Balhoff served as the 2010 President of the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association and still remains active in all local and state dental associations. He also became the first Orthodontist to start the charitable arm of Smiles Change Lives in La.

James (Jim) Frugé, DDS is a Louisiana State University School of Dentistry graduate who graduated with honors and attained both his DDS and specialty certificate in orthodontics. He is a board-certified orthodontist with 30+ years of clinical experience. Aside from his clinical practice, he has taught graduate level orthodontics at LSU where he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience. Orthodontics has grown into a family practice for Dr. Frugé where he has the pleasure of working daily with his brother, André, and son, Bradley. He is very proud of their practice and all of the changes and transformations they have seen in their patients over the years. Having the ability to improve a person’s health and watch them gain self-confidence truly gives a special feeling.

Andre’ Frugé, DDS Prior to becoming a Board Certified orthodontist, Dr. Andre’ Frugé attended Louisiana State University School of Dentistry for both his DDS and Certificate in Orthodontics. As a part of his continuing education, he attended the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Meeting, the Super Schulman Orthodontic Study Group and Interdisciplinary Study Club, and various other meetings and seminars throughout each year. By attending many hours of continuing education, his family is able to offer patients the most current and up to date procedures as well as use of the most advanced orthodontic bracket systems.

Bradley Frugé, DDS A native of Baton Rouge, Bradley Frugé graduated from Episcopal High School in 1997. As a high school student, he spent his afternoons and summers serving as a sterilization technician and has always been a part of the Frugé Orthodontics family. He attended Southern Methodist University and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in biological science. After graduation, he continued his studies at LSU School of Dentistry, graduating in 2005 with honors, including membership in the C. Edmund Kells Honor Society and Omicron Kappa Upsilon. In 2007, he obtained his Masters of Science degree and certification in orthodontics from Saint Louis University. Upon graduation from SLU, Bradley moved back to Baton Rouge and joined his family’s practice with his father and uncle. He is a board certified orthodontist and served as the president of the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association in 2013.

Kramer Sherman, DDS is following the footsteps of his father, Dr. Stephen Sherman and his brother Dr. Stephen Sherman Jr. After graduating from Catholic High School, He attended LSU where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2012. He then earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree in 2017 from LSUHSC in New Orleans. Kramer earned the Deans Award for the most outstanding graduate in his class, was a member of OKU Dental Honor Society, and C. Edmund Kells Honor Society like his father and brother. Dr. Kramer continued his education at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Orthodontic Department and earned a Master of Sciences degree. Outside of Orthodontics, Dr. Kramer enjoys supporting LSU athletics, spending time with his family and friends, and all things outdoors. He recently got a Chesapeake Retriever, named Okie, and they reside in Baton Rouge. Dr. Kramer is excited to be able to practice alongside his family and Dr. Balhoff in his hometown.

Josh Parker, DDS was born and raised in Baton Rouge and graduated from Central Private High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree at LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. While in dental school, he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, C. Edmunds Kells Dental Honor Society, received several scholarships and awards for academic excellence, and graduated at the top of his class. After dental school, Dr. Parker decided to further his education in the field of orthodontics to help change people’s lives by creating beautiful smiles! He completed his three-year orthodontic specialty residency and received a Master’s of Science degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, which was ranked the #1 dental school in the country by U.S. News. His graduate research was on lingual orthodontics (braces behind your teeth) and worked closely with Drs. Salome and Comella who together have treated thousands of patients with lingual orthodontic appliances. Dr. Parker was recently chosen to present his graduate research project at OrthoVOICE 2014, an Orthodontic International Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas.

Stephen L. Sherman, DDS is an orthodontic specialist in Baton Rouge, Geismar and Central. Louisiana. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in 1976, he graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 1983 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. In 1985, Dr. Sherman earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma School of Dentistry Orthodontics Department. He has lectured at both local and national meetings and is active in his local and state dental associations, having served as president of the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association and the Louisiana Orthodontic Association.

David Balhoff, DDS is following in the footsteps of his father Dr. Stephen Sherman. After graduating from Catholic High School, he attended Louisiana State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2012. He then earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2016 from Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Like his father, he was a member of the C. Edmund Kells Honor Society. Dr. Stephen continued his education at the University of Oklahoma School of Dentistry Orthodontics Department and earned a Master of Science degree. Outside of Orthodontics, Dr. Stephen enjoys supporting LSU athletics, spending time with his family and friends and all things outdoors. He recently married the girl of his dreams, Ainsley Anderson Sherman, and they reside in Baton Rouge. Dr. Stephen is excited to be able to practice alongside his father and Dr. Balhoff in his hometown.

Courtney Gonsoulin, MS, CCC-SLP received her undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders from Louisiana State University and completed her Master of Science Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Mrs. Gonsoulin has over 25 years of experience with children and their families with specializations in pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders in the medically fragile population and children born with cleft palate and craniofacial disorders. Mrs. Gonsoulin has specializations in Early Intervention with emphasis on multidisciplinary and cross-training approaches. Mrs. Gonsoulin is the Coordinator of the The Boh Center Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders Program with Ochsner Hospital for Children in New Orleans and serves as the supervisor for Speech Pathology services for Ochsner- Baton Rouge. She also is Clinical Faculty at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders where she teaches and supervises graduate students in the area of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders and cleft and craniofacial disorders. Mrs. Gonsoulin serves on the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital Cleft and Craniofacial team, is a member of International Association for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing, Feeding Matters and serves on the board for the Capital Area Partners Cleft Initiative (CAPCI). She is also a volunteer for the Global Smiles Foundation where she participates in humanitarian missions for cleft care in Beirut Lebanon.
