Receipt

April the 9th 1763 Recd of Mr. John Sutton ₤2:0:4 part of pay secure and get him a patent for 100 acres of Land in Dobbs County North Side of Neuse River joyning John Giles and Thos Burnets lines ? Philip Stone ? and ₤0:5:0 to search the office and get the courses of John Gileses land ??? Mr. Sotten now lives on

Misspelling of ‘Sutten’ for Sutton not uncommon. Abstract of deed (below) provides proof that this early, 1763 document, coupled with the 1746, ca. 1757, and 1741 (copy) documents, describe original Bucklesberry land owned by John1, and inherited by his son, Benjamin, which was passed down to his descendants. “P 3 – Indenture – 10 Feb. 1870 – Noah Rouse and M. payment for survey of a tract of land likely purchased by John1, although he is not named in the document. We can rule-out the possibility that the land was surveyed for John’s son, Benjamin (b. ca. 1752), as he would have been only about 13 years of age at the time, much too young to have been a landowner, let alone a buyer of land. Although John is not named in this document, it is believed to have been in his possession initially and passed down to his son, Benjamin.

Benjamin’s father, John1, born ca. 1730 and died before 1773, had a son named John, born ca. 1758. Benjamin also had a son named, John, born ca. 1779. We can immediately alleviate Benjamin’s son as the John named in this document, as he would have been only about 20 years of age, and would not have yet amassed the magnitude of property and wherewithal described in this receipt. Both John1, and son, John, Jr., then would be candidates for the John named in the document. However, there is no other document in the Clellan Sutton Collection in which John, Jr. made individual purchases or was invoiced at this monetary level. The older condition of the document, and use of the British pound, would suggest a mid-/late-1700s date. Therefore, we can reasonably assign this document to John1 and a date of before 1773, John1’s death date. The 1792 Coinage Act designated the dollar as the unit of currency in the US, although it would be decades before the country would see widespread use of the dollar, see https://eh.net/encyclopedia/money-in-the-american-colonies/ ‘Ullage’ is a unit of measure. Word, ‘Copy’ (bottom) indicates this document was not prepared in the referenced year, 1741; rather, it was a handwritten copy prepared more than 30 years later, although we are uncertain of the exact year. James Glasgow, who signed this copied document, was not sworn into office as Secretary of State until 1777, an office in which he continued to be re-elected until 1789. Glasgow lived at Harmony Hall in Kinston from 1777 to 1781, so a circa date of 1777-1781 for this document (as a copy) would be reasonable. Re: James Glasgow, http://ncpedia.org/biography/glasgow-james http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Glasgow). Per Martha Mewborn Marble (1.2.15 email), “Doubled checked patent book today. That was a 1741 patent. Someone obviously requested a copy during Glasgow’s term. Can’t prove it but obvious reason was the current owner needed to clear up something. Probably mets & bounds. Big question…has always been….how did the Suttons get it. No apparent deed & that leaves inheritance.” A 'pole' is equal to 16.5 ft. The original 1741 document predates the birth of Benjamin Sutton (ca. 1752), known son of John Sutton; however, the copy circa date of 1777 to 1781 places Benjamin’s age at 25 to 29 years old at the time. Given that his father, John, died before 1773 (per Marble), years before this document was likely copied, Benjamin likely obtained the copied document, making it the earliest document in the Collection that we can tie directly to John’s son, Benjamin.

***This document ties back in some way to the 160 acres identified in the 1748 John Giles survey, as the language is identical in places.*** Question: Is the John Sutton cited at bottom of front page of document (in isolation, not within the text of the land survey narrative, and appearing alongside the name of Arthur Maxwell) related to Benjamin? Was it Benjamin’s father, John1 (born ca. 1703; d. before 1773), or Benjamin’s brother, John, Jr. (born ca. 1758; d.1820-1830), or Benjamin’s son, John2 (born 1779; d. ca. 1858)? The John Sutton named in the 1790 Benjamin Sutton survey that similarly bears Authur Maxwell’s name, could only be John, Jr., as his father, John1, died before 1773. We may confidently conclude, then, that the John named in the current document is also John, Jr. In light of his ca. birth year of 1758,and given John, Jr. would have had to have been legal age of 21 years of age to witness this document, we can assign a 1780 ca. date to it.

Per Martha Marble, William (b. ca. 1760; d. 1813-1820) was a known son of John1 from Bertie County, and, therefore, a brother of Benjamin. Benjamin also had a son named, William (b. 1784-1789; died after 1840); however, he would have been an infant child at the writing of this receipt in 1785.

Per Martha Marble, Simon (b. 1765-1767; died before 1813 in Duplin Co.) is believed, although not known, to have been a son of John1. This document provides evidence that Simon was a brother of Benjamin and may have been living in the Bucklesberry locale at the time, given this receipt was retained in, and contemporary with, other Benjamin Sutton documents. Benjamin had no son named Simon. Per Martha Mewborn Marble, email, 3.3.15, “This indicates a possible connection with John Herring. Maybe he was the father-in-law of Simon or maybe the grandfather?”

Survey [Diagram showing 40 acres] State of No. Carolina by Wart. No. 3 dated 12th August 1790 I have Surveyed a Tract of Land for Benjamin Sutton Containing Forty acres lying in Dobbs County Beginning at a gum Burnetts corner and runs with his line East two hundred and twenty eight poles to a gum Thos Uzzells [torn] line North fifty two poles near [torn] Beg. Corner a Sweet gum then with his own [torn] line to the Begining December 8th [178?] Arthur Maxwell John Sutton [torn] ?? Surv.

The John Sutton named in this document would not have been Benjamin’s father, John1, since he died before 1773. Benjamin had a son named, John, born ca. 1779; however, it is unlikely that the John in this document was Benjamin’s son, as he would have been only about 11 years of age at the time. This John is more likely John1’s son, John, Jr. (b. ca. 1758), making him about 32 years old. So, Benjamin’s brother, John, Jr., was likely a witness in this document.

Know all Men by these presents that I Benjamin Sutton of the County of Dobbs & State of No. Carolina am held & firmly bound to John Herring in the Final Sum of One Thousand Pounds Current Money of the said State to be paid to the Said John Herring his Heirs Executors and Administrators or Assigns for the True payment thereof I bind myself my Heirs Executors and Administrators firmly by these presents Sealed with my Seal and dated this 24th day of August 1791. The Condition of the above Obligation is Such That Whereas the said Benjamin Sutton hath made an Entry in the Land office for Three Hundred and fifty Acres Land in Bucklesberry on the East Side Bear Creek in Dobbs County Now If a Title or Grant is Obtain’d for Said Land by Virtue of Said Entry And the said Benjamin Sutton doth within Two Months if as it is Obtained make and assign unto the said John Herring or his Heirs a good & Lawful Deed of Sale for his The Sd. Sutons Right by Virtue of Sd.

Paragraph two indicates that Benjamin inherited land from John, which provides tacit proof that John was the father of Benjamin. Per Roger E. Krammer ([email protected]), 3.11.15… “Benjamin Sutton owed money to Herring.... and he was going to get a grant of land and was going to sign it over to Herring when it came through... land surveyed by John Sutton (I guess he owned it) and passed to Benjamin Sutton....ALSO included to help pay the debt was land that was formerly owned by John Herring and now owned by Benjamin Sutton….? Maybe Benjamin Sutton married a daughter of John Herring. Sutton got land as a wedding gift from John Herring. Sutton borrowed other monies from Herring and had to pay him back by getting a

Appears to be the right-half of a larger document (left-half is missing) There is a capital letter to the left of Suton on the back side of the document. Faint, but the capital letter appears to have a large loop in the upper-part of the letter, suggesting the likelihood that it is a capital, B. See 1802 receipt, also signed by William Croom, where the capital B in Benjamin’s name shows the same large loop in the upper-part of the capital B. Therefore, we can surmise with reasonable certainty that this is a Benjamin Sutton document, and, particular, since it is dated in the same year range as other Benjamin documents.

Why a document bearing Benjamin’s brother’s name was retained and passed-down through the Benjamin line remains a mystery.

Why a document bearing Benjamin’s brother’s name was retained and passed-down through the Benjamin line remains a mystery. Perhaps Simon was living in the household of, or farming with, Benjamin for a period of time before moving to Duplin Co. It is odd that Simon is called “Jr.” here.

Since Benjamin had no son named, James, then the James named in this document may likely have been the purported son of John1.

son, Thomas was born ca. 1782, making him age 26 at the time of this document. The likelihood of a receipt having to do with Benjamin’s brother, Thomas, particularly, at a seasoned age of 50 years, having been preserved and passed-down to Benjamin’s descendants is not as likely as a receipt from Benjamin’s young adult son, Thomas, having been passed-down. Therefore, this Thomas is probably Benjamin’s son.

Westbrook, Edwin Receipt 50 Recd of John Sutton Jr Benjamin Sutton tax for the year 1808 the above tax ₤3-5-4 Edwin Westbrook

Benjamin’s son, John (b. ca. 1779), would have been an adult at this time, and approximately 30 years old. The John, Jr. named in this document was most likely Benjamin’s son, who was old enough to have been farming land with his father. There is a remote possibility that this John, Jr. could have been the brother of Benjamin (both sons of John1). John, Jr. (b. ca. 1758; died 1820-1830), son of John1, would have been about 51 years of age at the time of this document. Benjamin (b. ca. 1752) would have been about 56 years of age. Land inherited from their father, John1, would have already been divided, and the brothers would have been separately paying taxes on inherited land. It is highly likely that the two brothers, at this late age of their lives, would not have been paying land taxes together. It is more likely the case that this was Benjamin’s son, John, paying taxes on behalf of his father. It is odd, though, that he is referred to as “Jr.”

Although Benjamin had a brother named, John, Benjamin’s son, John (born ca. 1779), would have been an adult at this time, approximately 30 years old. It is more likely that the John named in this document is the son of Benjamin, given Benjamin appears to be interceding for him. Of significance, it appears that John Sutton signed his own name, providing additional proof this was most likely Benjamin’s son. 1809 Sutton, John, Jr. Washington, John Washington, Richard

Receipt Received Kinston 26th January 1809 of John Sutton junior Four pounds sixteen shillings and five pence in full of amt to this date For John Washington Richa Washington

Benjamin had a brother named John, who may have been referred to as John, Jr. (b. ca. 1758) since their father was named, John. If it was this John, he would have been about 51 years of age at the time. Benjamin also had a son named, John (b. ca. 1779), which would have made him about 30 years of age at the time. The likelihood of a receipt from Benjamin’s brother, John (age 51) being in Benjamin’s possession and passed-down to his descendents is not as likely as a receipt from

Benjamin’s son, John (age 30), who would have been a young adult at the time, and possibly still farming and doing business with his father, Benjamin. Assuming this receipt, then, is that of the younger John, it is unusual that he is referred to as “Jr.”.

The Thomas and William here are more likely sons of Benjamin, although Benjamin had brothers named Thomas and William (all sons of John1) as well. John1’s Sons: William…born circa 1760; died 1813-1820 (Lenoir Co.)—may well have been deceased at the time of this document.

Clellan Sutton Collection | Bucklesberry Records Transcriptions

Last Update: 7.17.16 24

Thomas…born before 1758; no information on his death—would have been about 56 years old at this time. Benjamin’s Sons: Thomas…born ca 1782 (Dobbs Co.); married [Unknown]; would have been about 42 years of age at this time. William…born 1784-1789 (Dobbs Co.); died after 1840 (Lenoir Co.); would have been in his late-30s/early-40s at this time. It is more plausible that the transaction in this document would have been between Benjamin and his sons, who may have needed the financial backing and support of their father. It is less likely this had to do with Benjamin’s brothers, one who might have already been deceased, and the other who may have been in his later years of life.

There are additional computations in the right margin of document. This is the first document where Senior (i.e., ‘Senr’) is used with Benjamin’s name. Benjamin had an adult son named Benjamin (b. 1795), who would have been about 23 years of age at this time, which allowed for the elder Benjamin to carry the title of “Senr.” for differentiation.

Sutton, John Sutton, Elizabeth

None Photo The John Barwick house as it did look in better days. By Hugh Barwick & Duval Barwick to Clellan Sutton in Nov 1991

Clellan Sutton wrote this. Jeremiah, Sr., son of John Sutton, probably inherited the house from his father. Jeremiah, Sr. and first wife, Tabitha, likely reared their children at this homeplace. Jeremiah then built his homeplace on Kennedy Home Rd., down a little from Jack Sutton’s homeplace now, same side of the highway, next to the old barn that is falling down now. We think that Martha Jane Parks Sutton Elmore and her first husband, Alonza Sutton, son of Jeremiah, Sr. were likely the next ones to live this homeplace. Alonza died prematurely, after they had three children. Martha Jane then married John Barwick, and they reared their children at the homeplace, too.

Only occurrence of Hardy’s name preceded by an initial ‘B’ suggesting possibly ‘Benjamin.’ First document to mention tuition paid for education. Hardy and Annie Hill Sutton had three children who would have been school-age at the time: Nancy, age 11; Thomas, age 10; and Elizabeth, age 9. The difference of 4.59 subtracted from 11.32 should be 6.73, not 7.73. First evidence of a math error in the Collection.

Sally. Benjamin and Sarah had a daughter named, Sarah, who married Jesse Hardy; however, at about 56 years of age in 1838, she would have been using her husband's last name of Hardy. Therefore, it is more likely that the Sally Sutton named in this document is Hardy Sutton's mother, Sarah Hardy Sutton, wife of Benjamin.

Per Ollie Sutton Brunner, the Parks family married (?) into the Suttons. For example, Martha Jane Parks was reared in the home of Hardy and Annie Hill Sutton, essentially adopted (need to clarify this w/ Ollie). Martha Jane Parks married Alonza Sutton who died after several children, then she married John Barwick. Martha Jane’s father died, and her mother remarried, and the stepfather disliked Martha Jane, which is why Hardy and Annie Hill Sutton took her in their home and reared her as their as a young girl elementary-age. This was told to Ollie by her parents.

Will of Hardy Sutton In the name of God, Amen I Hardy Sutton Senr of the County of Lenoir and State of North Carolina being of sound mind and disposing memory but considering the wortfulty of my earthly existence do make and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say; First That my executor herein after named shall provide my body a decent christian burial suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends and my circumstances of life and pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts howsoever and to whomsoever owing out of the moneys that may first come into his hands as a part of my estate. Secondly It is my will and desire that the property being negroes, that I have heretofore by deed of gift given to Dempsey Wood and his children be his and theirs for them to hold and enjoy for their own use and benefit and which said deed of gifts I do now in every respect confirm and make it a part of this will and will Testament. Thirdly I give unto my beloved wife Ann Sutton for her life or widowhood one third of my home tract of land which shall include my dwelling house and out buildings being one third of the land given me by deed and by will of my father Benjamin Sutton deceased and at her death or marrige it is my will and desire that it shall then go to and I do hereby at that time devise and give the same unto my well beloved son Julius E. Sutton and his children forever. Fourthly I give unto my well beloved wife Ann Sutton for her life or widowhood the following negro slaves old Chaney, Elijah, Hardy, Polly, Martha and little Save, and at her death or marriage I give and bequeath the said old Chaney, Elijah and Martha to my well beloved son Lemuel H Sutton and his children forever. Fifthly I give and devise unto my well beloved son Julius E Sutton all of my home Tract of land with exception of the third thereof herein fe before to and unto my wife Ann Sutton for her life or widow hood being the land given me by deed and by will by my father Benjamin Sutton so that at the death or marriage of his mother he the said Julius E Sutton shall own the whole of my said home tract to him the said Julius E Sutton and his children forever.

Collection, and not the original document.*** White Hall public road was what is now Kennedy Home Road. Re: son, Thomas…land purchased from Benjamin Sutton probably refers to Hardy’s brother, Benjamin, rather than his father, Benjamin, since Hardy’s father, Benjamin died in 1837, long before the 1861 date of Hardy’s will. The Benjamin named here cannot be Thomas’ brother, Benjamin Franklin, else Franklin would have been named here, as Franklin was included in numerous other documents for BFS. Ollie (3.27.15) says one of Benjamin Franklin’s daughters took care of Thomas and Juilia until their death. They willed her their land. At some point, this daughter had a son, who had an accident in college, broke his back, and the Thomas and Juilia farm was sold to old Dick Dawson, who built the D&E Milling Co. where Gene and April Parrish’s house now stands, and across the corner from Joe and Connie Sutton’s house. Thomas and Julia’s house was the hip-roofed house originally located in from of Joe and Connie Sutton’s house, which was purchased, relocated, and restored by Roy and Libby Sutton Smith, and now situated on the Kennedy Home Rd. Ollie says father, Clellan, stated that these hip-roofed houses were constructed out of lightwood around the Civil War, and were one-storey house, as opposed to two-storey homes built in the early-1800s. Roy Smith told Joe that, when the Thomas Sutton house was being moved to its current location, they found the year, 1857, carved in the mortar on the back side of the fireplace chimney in the house. Re: William H Sutton…Ollie (3.27.15) says the hip-roof house located directly in front of Jean and Pete Pate was William’s house, which has been purchased and relocated and restored down the Harold Sutton Rd toward Hwy 70 and owned by Clifton Sutton.

Re: Lemuel H Sutton….the 1866 hand-drawn map by William Arthur, currently owned by Mary Lucile Sutton Beaman, shows the 246-acre tract of land at Frog Point next to Hardy Bridge. Wesley Allen Sutton and Chester Hooten purchased a 40 plus/minus acre tract of land in this same area from Barbara Sutton Bright in the 1980’s. Barbara was one of the four daughters of Hodges and Ruby Sutton. Hodges was a son of George, who was a son of Junius, who was the twin brother of Julius, who were sons of Hardy. An 1866 hand-drawn map (by William Arthur) owned by Lucile Sutton Beaman names a Lemuel Sutton. This is the same Lemuel H. Sutton, son of Hardy and Annie Hill Sutton, identified in Hardy Sutton’s will. Section ‘Fifteenthly’ of the will states that the land bequeathed to Lemuel was located in the Frog Point area of Bucklesberry. Still referred to as Frog Point today, Lemuel’s 240-acre section of land as surveyed on the Arthur map was geographically situated on the North side of the Neuse River, and included land on the East and West sides of the current Hardy Bridge Road. Lemuel’s land included the current bridge area and sandbar (noted as ‘fishery’ on the map). First occurrence of ‘Jr.’ used with Benjamin F. Sutton’s name. Technically, he was not a ‘Jr.’. There is a single 1836 document in the Collection that names Hardy as ‘B. Hardy Sutton,’ suggesting the possibility that Hardy’s first name was ‘Benjamin’. Still, this would not allow for Benjamin Franklin to have used ‘Jr.’ after his name.

S. B. Evans was may have been the local pharmacist or physician. Born in 1846, twin sons, Junius and Julius, would have been 21 years of age at the date of this document. Christiana, born in 1850, would have been 17 years old. Re: Quinine… http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2006/082006/08122006/212900 “THE WONDER DRUG during the Civil War was quinine. The use of quinine was well known and understood by Confederate and Union physicians, and it was a valuable drug in the supply table of both armies….Quinine is found in the bark of the cinchona tree of South America. It was prepared as early as the 17th century. The drug acts upon the effects and reproduction of the malarial parasites, or sporozoa, injected by anopheles mosquitoes as they take a blood meal….The symptoms are chills, shakes, fever and headache occurring every four to six hours. It was recognized that soldiers camping at night near swampy, wet areas often came down with these symptoms. Physicians blamed the swampy night air. Mal aria equals "bad air."” Not surprising, then, that this may well have been a health issue faced by the Suttons living in Bucklesberry ‘picosin’ (i.e., swamp). Re: Calomel… http://civilwartalk.com/threads/calomel.83372/ “Calomel was a mercury based compound used extensively by both Union and Confederate doctors to treat a wide variety of medical conditions….19th century doctors feared constipation, and, dispensing calomel was one of the main methods of keeping the bowels "open." However, strangely enough,

calomel was also given to treat diarrhea and dysentery. Many physicians seemed unaware that the doses of calomel, and a related compound, tartar emetic, often caused worse problems that the original condition. The large and frequent doses of mercury compounds caused excessive salivation - often a pint to a quart a day. Many patients receiving these "heroic" doses, suffered from mercurial gangrene - death of cheek and mouth tissue that often led to permanent facial deformities. Lose and lost teeth were common, as was death from mercury poisoning.”

This is the earliest document in Collection that shows name change of town (closest to Bucklesberry and from which purchases for living goods were made by the Suttons) from ‘Moseley Hall’ to ‘La Grange.’ Note Anny Sutton receipt for same year, 1869 and eleven months earlier (January 9) and with the same proprietor, John L. Hardee, named the town as ‘Moseley Hall.’ “Originally named Moseley Hall for a nearby plantation, La Grange emerged as a railroad market town with the completion of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad in 1858. The railroad connected Lenoir County to the eastern port of Morehead City and to the eastern terminus of the North Carolina Railroad at Goldsboro, fourteen miles to the west. The town was incorporated in 1869 and named La Grange for the Parisian estate of the Revolutionary War hero LaFayette.” Source: http://www.livingplaces.com/NC/Lenoir_County/La_Grange_Town/La_Grange_Historic_District.html Re: Blue Stone… “Blue Stone, or Powder, used in washing of linen, is the same with smalt, either in the lump or powdered. ‘G’d’ is ‘Guardian’ Significant that Thomas Burnett land is identified in this document, some 130 years from its first mention in the earliest, 1741 document in the Collection. Names referenced in the phrase, “Thos Jones and Thos Burnetts old patent corner,” can be linked to the earliest document in the Collection, dated 1741, also naming Thomas Burnett. (See note re: abstract deed in Notes for 1741 document). Also significant that ‘Pocosin’ is named along with ‘Bucklesberry’. This is the first recurrence of this term since the 1794 document of the State land grant deed to Benjamin in the Collection. John Sutton mentioned is likely brother of Hardy Sutton, both sons of Benjamin Sutton. Cross-referenced this document with the 1871 promissory note for Julius Sutton, identifying same $2,000 amount for mortgage. Space for Nansetta’s name in document, as Julius’ wife, shows a faded ink for her name, suggesting her name was added after preparation of the narrative of the document.

For value received on the f [document torn] day of Jan eighteen hundred and seventy one we promise to pay John Ivey Guardian to Dempsey Parks and Martha Jane Parks the sum of two thousand dollars with interest from date Witness our hands and seals this the 16th day of Feb 1870 Witness J W Harper [four 25 cents tax revenue stamps] [back side] Received of Julius E. Sutton the Sum of Thirteen Hundred and eighty dollars in part payment of the within note. November 4th 1871

The part of the document bearing signatures of the borrowers has been deliberately cut away, making it unknown who the borrowers were. The 1871 year that the ‘value [was] received’ is inconsistent with the 1870 year that the document was prepared and signed.

The total sum of two taxes of $16.54 is inconsistent with $16.97 in the lower-left corner of receipt. ‘D.S’ likely means Deputy Sheriff.

Governor Charles Manly.

Manly graduated from the University of North

Carolina at Chapel Hill (where he would later

serve as a Trustee) in 1824. He practiced

law in New Bern, North Carolina, was

elected to the North Carolina House of

Commons for a term, and served as a

Superior Court judge for approximately

twenty years, before being named to the

Supreme Court. He filled the seat left vacant

by Justice Thomas Ruffin's second

Shortly after resigning from the Court, Manly

legislature elected Manly to the United

Significant that bi-racial, Samuel, son of Thomas, who was adopted by Annie Hill Sutton, is still being cared for. A more typical La Grange commercial structure is the Simeon Wooten Building (121 South Caswell Street). Built in the early 1910s, it is a two-part brick commercial structure with a stepped parapet and corbelled brickwork. They had 10 children, but one daughter, Vivian Glenda (Glen) died at age 3 in 1882, well before this picture was made. So, 9 of the 10 children are also likely in the photograph. Likely it was located at the current Strabane crossoad (intersection of US Hwy 55 and Hardy Bridge Rd.). My father, Wesley Allen Sutton, purchased his work shoes at Braxton Newman’s Store when his sons, Joe and Jeff, were young boys in the 1960s. Braxton’s Store was situation in the northeast corner of the crossroads at Strabane. Although the store is no longer standing, the concrete slab for the gas pumps are still there. Louiza, Junius, Julius, and Christian are recorded in a different color ink and with a different handwriting style. Wood family lived in the old two-storey house still standing in the Potneck community, directly off of Kennedy Home Road, about a quarter-mile east of Bucklesberry community and beyond the Jere Sutton Cemetary. in time, rather than chronologically as the children were born, which would have spanned 13 years (1825 to 1838). If we can assume that mother, Anna, was the writer, then she apparently had the birth dates of her children recorded previously and elsewhere (e.g., scraps of paper, etc.) and decided to transfer the birth dates to the family Bible, which served as a more permanent record. Note use of ‘bornde’ (for past tense, ‘born’). Per Allen Humphrey, 1850 Census of Lenoir Co., Ivey Sutton, age 16, was the only member in the Thomas Sutton, age 68, household. Ivey’s birth date would have been 1834, which is the recorded birth date of Samuel Ivy Sutton. Marble’s position is that it is unclear whether Ivey was the son of this Thomas. But she believes this Thomas is probably the son of Benjamin, and brother of Hardy. This Census data provides the basis for establishing a ca. 1782 birth date for Thomas.
