READINGS FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Always Together at Mass

Please follow along together as a family or follow along with the priest online.

READING 1: ACTS 2:14, 22-33

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: “You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in

Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words. You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazarene

was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst,

as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to

crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.

For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has

been glad and my tongue has exulted; my esh, too, will dwell in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,

nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will ll me with joy in your

presence.

“My brothers, one can condently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our

midst to this day. But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his

descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he abandoned to the

netherworld nor did his esh see corruption. God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of

God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PS 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;

I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.”

O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,

you it is who hold fast my lot.

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life.

I bless the LORD who counsels me;

even in the night my heart exhorts me.

I set the LORD ever before me;

with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life.

Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,

my body, too, abides in condence; because you

will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,

nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life.

You will show me the path to life,

abounding joy in your presence,

the delights at your right hand forever.

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life.

READINGS FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER (CONTINUED)

READING 2: 1 PT 1:17-21

Beloved: If you invoke as Father him who judges impartially according to each one’s works, conduct yourselves with

reverence during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by

your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless

unblemished lamb.

He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the nal time for you, who through him believe in God who

raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

GOSPEL: LK 24:13-35

That very day, the rst day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called

Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing

and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked

them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to

him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these

days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,

who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him

over to a sentence of death and crucied him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all

this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the

tomb early in the morning and did not nd his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels

who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had

described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the

prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning

with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the

village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for

it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with

them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they

recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while

he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they

found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared

to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of

bread.

GOSPEL REFLECTION - THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING

With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each

other, “Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”

Luke 24:31-32 (Year A)

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Luke 24:45 (Year B)

These two passages above, from two subsequent appearances of Jesus to the Apostles, produced a unique blessing.

In each story, Jesus opened the minds of the Apostles to the Scriptures in a new way. These were ordinary men who

were given an extraordinary gift of understanding. It didn’t come to them as a result of long study and hard work.

Rather, it came to them as a result of their openness to Christ’s powerful action in their lives. Jesus unlocked the

mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven to them. As a result, they suddenly understood truths that could never be learned

on their own.

So it is with us. The mysteries of God are vast and wide. They are deep and transforming. But so often we fail to

understand. We often even fail to want to understand.

Think about those things in your life now, or in your past, that have left you confused. You need a special gift of the

Holy Spirit to make sense of them. And you need this gift to make sense of the many good things of God found in the

Scriptures also. This is the Gift of Understanding. It’s a spiritual gift that unlocks the many mysteries of life for us.

Without the Gift of Understanding, we are left on our own to try to make sense of life. This is especially true when we

are faced with hardship and suffering. How is it, for example, that an all-powerful and all-loving God can allow the good

and the innocent to suffer? How is it that God can seem absent at times from human tragedy?

The truth is that He is not absent. He is centrally involved in all things. What we need to receive is an understanding

of the profound and mysterious ways of God. We need to understand the Scriptures, human suffering, human

relationships, and divine action in our lives. But this will never happen unless we allow Jesus to open our minds.

Allowing Jesus to open our minds takes faith and surrender. It means we believe rst and understand later. It means

we trust Him even though we do not see. St. Augustine once said, “Faith is to believe what you do not see. The reward

of faith is to see what you believe.” Are you willing to believe without seeing? Are you willing to believe in the goodness

and love of God even though life, or a particular situation in life, does not make sense?

Reect, today, upon the Gift of Understanding. Believing in God means we believe in a person. We believe in Him even

though we nd ourselves confused about particular circumstances. But this gift of believing, the gift of faith, opens

the door to a depth of understanding that we could never arrive at on our own.

Lord, give me the Gift of Understanding. Help me to know You and to understand Your actions in my life. Help me to

especially turn to You in the most troubling moments of life. Jesus, I trust in You.

A “FEW” WORDS FROM FR. ROBERT

Fr. Dan and Church of the Holy Family (as of the morning of April 21st)

Please keep Fr. Dan O'Connell in your prayers. As many of you know, Fr. Dan was in the hospital in March for pneumonia. After spending a week

in the hospital and testing negative for COVID-19 he was transferred to Regional Rehab for a week of physical therapy. A few days after

returning home, he was notied that a staff member at Regional Rehab tested positive for COVID-19. Unfortunately, further testing for Fr. Dan

has come back as being positive for COVID-19. He was admitted to the hospital as a precautionary measure given his recent health issue and is

resting comfortably in a private room. He is not in ICU or on a ventilator. We will keep you posted on his condition, and we ask all of you for your

prayers that he recovers quickly. If you know of anyone from Holy Family assure them that they are welcome at any of the churches in the

Columbus Deanery and if they have a sacramental emergency, please have them call St. Anne at 706-561-8678 and follow the prompts for the

emergency line.

A New Normal

The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all a new normal. It has taken away things we have always appreciated, including the company of friends,

time in church, freedom of movement, and the list goes on and on. It has also given us new things to enjoy, such as quiet time, time as a family,

time to pray by yourself and new ways to communicate with friends and family. For me, this experience has given me new routines, routines

I hope to hold onto if we ever go back to the “old normal.” I’ve always prayed in the morning when it’s still dark and quiet outside. Now I have

more time to do so. All three friars pray the Mass together in the morning. I nd that very comforting. When this all started I was resolved to

keep moving. I walk around the neighborhood every night. I’ve discovered the walking trail over by the college and enjoy it from time to time.

Sometimes our elliptical machine in the Friary needs a schedule because two or more of us want to use it at the same time. While this “new

normal” continues to be a time of caution and concern, it also presents us with ways to take care of our soul and take care of our bodies. As

I type this, Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp has just decided to allow us to reopen our churches while respecting social distancing. We have not

been given any instruction from the Diocese of Savannah as I type this; however, I am sure they will help us determine our next step. Whatever

the future holds, coming to Mass will not be the same as it used to be, shoulder to shoulder. We will be sure to take the next steps in this

journey, thoughtfully, informed and prayerfully. St. Anne Church’s COVID-19 Response Team, made up of Margo Truett, Scott Voynich, Troy

Espiritu, John Bucholtz and Greg Camp, will help us do just that. Rest assured, we will do everything we can to feed our souls and keep our

families safe.

Our Financial Standing/Spending Freeze/Stang

As always, the people of St. Anne Church have remained faithful and generous in their support of our parish. I’ve found envelopes squeezed in

through the front doors of the church, slipped through the mail slot in the inner door of the oce, and left with the masks in the garage. One

day, when I didn’t lock my car, there were envelopes left on the passenger side of my front seat. When the church was still unlocked we even

found three cartons of eggs by the front altar. A signicant number of people have switched to online giving and the amount coming in has

tripled from $5,000, pre-virus to around $15,000. Yes, the collections are down as one would expect. During Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday this

year we received about half of what we received last year; however, we can meet our payroll and keep the lights on. We are OK. I know many

people will do their best to make up their usual offering when things settle down. Because we are in uncharted waters, I have placed a

campus-wide spending freeze on all expenses excluding payroll, contracted services and utilities. St. Anne Community Outreach continues

to buy food for those in need through a grant they received from the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley. As one would

suspect, the number of clients visiting the center grows every week. When it comes to the parish and the school, our priority has always been

making payroll. You might not know this but the Parish/School Payroll is just under $400,000 a month. Our teachers and administration are still

working very hard every day. The teachers’ assistants from our school are helping staff our Outreach Center. The parish staff are also in the

oce on a limited schedule. Travis, Micah and Jim are catching up on maintenance projects they were never able to get to and helping out at

the Outreach Center.

Annual Catholic Appeal 2020

The diocese has placed the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) on a

churches will reopen, as well as possible nancial changes for

donors, we will not continue to actively appeal for donations.

However, if you have made a pledge or if you wish to donate anyway,

your support would be greatly appreciated.
