TELEVISIONThe most exciting and entertaining kind of Mass Media is television. It brings moving pictures and sound directly to people’s homes. So we can see events in faraway places.

The name “TELEVISION” comes from Greek word “Tele” meaning “far” and Latin word “Visio” meaning “ to see“, so it means “to see far“.

TV has been commercially available since the late 1920s; it has become general in homes, businesses, particularly as a source of entertainment and news. Since the 1970s the availability of video cassettes, laserdiscs, DVDs and now Blu-ray Discs have resulted in the television set frequently being used for viewing recorded as well as broadcast material.

We use TV for two main reasons: information and entertainment. In the first place television is an entertainment. But it is not onlya convenient entertainment. It is more convenient and less expensive to sit comfortably at home than to go out to find entertainment in other places. We don't have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre or the cinema. Just turn on the TV set and watch amazing films, concerts, football matches. And nowadays TV has become a great part of our live. Many people all over the world come home after work or school and first they do is turning their TV sets on. Is it good or bad?

On the one hand television is doing a lot of harm. We begin to forget how to spend our spare time. All our free time is given to TV. That’s why the time is mostly wasted. Many people no longer read books. And of course, television may lead to poor health through rushed meals, lack of sleep and lack of exercise - it makes us lazy. Those who watch TV need do nothing. We are passive when we watch TV.  Informational use of TV isn’t always a wise option. It isn’t an accurate source of information. A situation gets worse if we rely only on this source of information without backing it up with other sources (newspapers, magazines, books, Internet, etc.). And it’s harmful for our health and bad for eyes. Many people report that after they watch TV for a long time, they feel no happier but more tired, and feel sorry that they have spent so much time watching it.

But on the other hand, we mustn’t forget what a great amount of information we get! I think we must watch TV to be well-informed. When we watch TV we learn about the world, famous people and global or recent news. It gives wonderful possibilities for education and opportunities to see the best actors and performances, to hear the latest news, to listen to political discussions and different concerts. We can choose programs that appeal to us more, because TV provides programs for all interests. TV services provide programs of general interest such as light entertainment, sport, current affairs, serious drama and music. There are programs on arts, children and family programs; interview with outstanding personalities, news reports covering international, national and local events. Television helps us to relax after a hard day’s work. Moreover, it stops people feeling lonely, it is educational and cheap. Advertisement on TV gives us information about different products and it makes easier to choose things to buy. (But advertisement - is also the most annoying part of television)

In my opinion we need TV inspite of its disadvantages. People need something like information center. As for me I like that there is a great choice of programs and wide range of topics and problems. People must know important information because they can use it in useful and right way.
