Discussion report
Hennepin County Environment and Energy
• Small focus group
• Choose one action
• Dig deeper and guide participants in identifying what is holding them back
• Initial responses don’t always uncover the actual barriers
Hennepin County Environment and Energy
Discussion report
• Tell us about your focus group audience
• What barriers did they bring up
• Based on what you learned, what strategies will you use or what will you focus on
Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy
• Updated CEED’s Energy Justice curriculum materials and created a facilitation guide
• Facilitated culturally appropriate, interactive community workshops on home heating and electricity

Hennepin County Environment and Energy
Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy
• Engaged more than 270 people in 16 workshops
• Participants already take action to save energy at home, mostly to save on their heating and electric bills
• Families in the audience cannot afford higher bills and believe it is important not to waste resources to protect our communities
• If they control it, many keep the temperature low and use extra blankets or space heaters in winter
Hennepin County Environment and Energy
Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy
• Some people had implemented their own solutions such as blankets in winter, fans in summer
• Most participants were aware that weatherization supplies are available
• Most participants didn’t know• Which supplies would be best (and
didn’t want to waste money)
• If they could install them properly
• If the cost and effort to install them would be worth it
