Clifford Devlin's Building Division was appointed to replace 240 square metres of glazed panelling forming the existing glass atrium to Block D at Johnson & Johnson's UK Headquarters in High Wycombe. To allow access to the roof level glazing, over 7 miles of scaffolding was installed both internally and externally. Internally a major exclusion zone was formed using white-faced plywood, lined with acoustic protection, to minimise the effect of the work, whilst maintaining aesthetics in the building, which remained fully occupied throughout. Further plywood and Correx sheeting was installed to protect glass balustrades, handrails and planters. Much of the work was undertaken out-of-hours which allowed maximum productivity and minimal disruption on the project. The external scaffold at roof level was encased with a shrink-wrap polythene system, providing a weath- erproof covering, which facilitated the removal of the glazing, whilst keeping the building weather tight, with a consistent ambient temperature, during the works. The new atrium glazing was installed by specialists Glassolutions, with operatives working simultane- ously from the internal scaffold deck and external roof area. To make full use of the access arrangements Clifford Devlin was retained to carry out a number of associated in-situ tasks including redecorating of the atriums structural steelwork and internal walls at atrium level to ground. In addition some 250 sq metres of roofing covering adjacent to the glazing was lifted and replaced with a new Kemperol Roofing system. A number of new uplighter luminaires were also installed .
