The vast volcanic pyramid of Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s iconic hiking challenges. Are you ready? Join Lynn Kanuka on this fully supported hike to the highest point in Africa, the 5,895m high Uhuru Peak. You’ll pass through dramatic variations in landscape from rainforest, to dry savannah to alpine desert, camping in mountain tents along the route with support from local guides and porters. You’ll be amazed and inspired by the incredible scenery that feels like walking from the equator to the North Pole in a week. Our carefully chosen Lemosho route is the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting panoramic vistas of various sides of the mountain. We like this route for its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery, and a high summit success rate. Climbing high during the day and sleeping overnight at slightly lower altitudes improves your chance to summit successfully. Lynn’s training plan will help you prepare physically and mentally for the adventure. Climbing Kili inspires transformation; standing on the roof of Africa, you’re sure to see the world in a different way. Thursday, Nov. 5: MoshiJoin Lynn for a day of warm up and getting ready for the climb. Explore your surroundings – Moshi is the centre of one of Tanzania’s major coffee-growing regions.Overnight: Mountain Inn Hotel, MoshiMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

Friday, Nov. 6: Mti Mkubwa camp (2750m) HIKING TIME: 3 HOURSAfter breakfast our mountain guide will brief you on the day ahead. Drive two hours from the hotel to the Londorossi Park Gate (2100m) to register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority. You are now ready to begin your three-hour hike into the rain forest. Be on the look-out for Colobus monkeys! Take it slow and steady today. You’ll be climbing with a senior guide plus assistant guides, so there will always be someone close by. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Campsite (2750m) in the early evening. The porters, who arrive at the campsite before you, will set up your tent and boil water for drinking and washing. The chef will prepare a snack then dinner. At nighttime, mountain temperatures may drop to freezing so be prepared!

Saturday, Nov. 7: Shira 2 Camp (3840m) HIKING TIME: 6.5 HOURSAfter an early morning breakfast, you will begin your ascent out of the rainforest and into the heather moorland zone. Cross many streams and walk over a plateau that leads to Shira 2 Camp (3840m). At this campsite, you’ll be next to a stream and have a spectacular view of the Western Breach and its glaciers in the East. Similar to the first night, your tents will be set up prior to arriving at camp and the porters will prepare drinking and washing water and your evening meal.

Sunday, Nov. 8: Barranco Camp (3950m) HIKING TIME: 7 HOURSFollowing an early morning breakfast, leave the moorland environment and enter the semi desert and rocky landscape. After five hours of walking east, you will be face to face with the Lava Tower (4630m). Packed lunches are served at the Tower and hikers have the option of climbing the massive Lava Tower weather permitting. After lunch, you will descend from Lava Tower (4630m) to the Barranco Campsite (3950m), allowing you to adjust to the conditions of high altitude.

Monday, Nov. 9: Karanga Camp (3950m) HIKING TIME: 4 – 5 HOURS This is a short hiking day meant for acclimatization. After an early morning breakfast, it is now time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may look intimidating at first glance, this Class 2 hike is usually much easier than anticipated; steep, narrow paths cut back and forth along the rock face. At the top of the Wall, you will have a spectacular view of Heim Glacier above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down in the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp (3950m).

Tuesday, Nov. 10: Barafu Hut (4600) HIKING TIME: 2 – 3 HOURSAfter breakfast, you will begin your ascent. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the trail used to descend on the final two days. The word “barafu” in Swahili means “ice” and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents will be exposed to wind and rocks so it is important for you to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served so you can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your guide will brief you in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 7PM!

Wednesday, Nov. 11: Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m) HIKING TIME: 8 HOURS TO REACH UHURU PEAK, 7 – 8 HOURS TO DESCEND TO MWEKAYour guide will wake you around midnight for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt. The route heads northwest over stone scree. After about six hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m), located on the crater rim. Enjoy the magnificent sunrise, you will continue ascending for about two hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and drinking tea before the three-hour descent to Barafu begins. After a hot lunch continue descending down to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected. You will have a dinner, wash, and rest soundly at camp.
