CLIMBING THE CLIMBING THE LADDERLADDER

Page 3: Climbing the Ladder

Then Jacob departed from Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and spent to a certain place and spent the night there, because the night there, because the sun had set; and he the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of took one of the stones of the place and put it under the place and put it under his head, and lay down in his head, and lay down in that place.that place.

Page 7: Climbing the Ladder

Many of us have heard of the four spiritual laws.

Page 8: Climbing the Ladder

They were a simple presentation of the Gospel used by Campus Crusade.

Page 9: Climbing the Ladder

I used them in tract form when I went to share the Gospel with people.

Page 10: Climbing the Ladder

The First Law was:

Page 11: Climbing the Ladder

“God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life!”

Page 12: Climbing the Ladder

That Plan is our destiny.

Page 13: Climbing the Ladder

There are a few things that I wish the Four Spiritual Laws had pointed out though.

Page 14: Climbing the Ladder

You see there are at least four other plans that compete with God’s Wonderful plan…..

Page 15: Climbing the Ladder

First of all – YOU have a plan for your life and usually think it is wonderful!

Page 16: Climbing the Ladder

Secondly – Your intimate relationships have a plan for your life and also think it is wonderful.

Page 17: Climbing the Ladder

Thirdly – The World has a plan for your life and definitely thinks it is wonderful.

Page 18: Climbing the Ladder

And fourthly – the Devil has a plan for your life and knows it is not wonderful but wants you to think it is.

Page 19: Climbing the Ladder

God’s plan for our lives can use the other four.

Page 20: Climbing the Ladder

But the other four without God will always end up off the path.

Page 21: Climbing the Ladder

Some will take us a little off path,

Page 22: Climbing the Ladder

Some will lead us to utter ruin…..

Page 23: Climbing the Ladder

Like we spoke of last week, “Our Plan” has at its foundation a God breathed vision.

Page 24: Climbing the Ladder

Like Jacob, we have dreams and passions that call to us…..

Page 25: Climbing the Ladder

They are set in our soul from before our birth.

Page 26: Climbing the Ladder

They are meant to lead us to a meeting with God.

Page 27: Climbing the Ladder

Actually, like Jacob’s life has shown us much more than a meeting…..

Page 28: Climbing the Ladder

A Wrestling Match!

Page 29: Climbing the Ladder

Even Jesus experienced this in his moving to fulfill his destiny.

Page 30: Climbing the Ladder

Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me."

Matthew 26:38

Page 31: Climbing the Ladder

And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."

Matthew 26:39

Page 32: Climbing the Ladder

Even Jesus went through to agony to give his will to God.

Page 33: Climbing the Ladder

And if it is so with the Son of God it will be even more so with us.

Page 34: Climbing the Ladder

Until Our Plan becomes His Plan, the dreams and passions of our souls will cause us and everyone in our lives trouble.

Page 35: Climbing the Ladder

But if we, like Jacob, will allow it to speak to us, this trouble can to show us the Path to God.

Page 36: Climbing the Ladder

The World’s Plan as the Bible presents it is not for our good.

Page 37: Climbing the Ladder

The Bible says “God so loved the world that He gave his only Son”

John 3:16

Page 38: Climbing the Ladder

Later in the scriptures he talks about Christians not loving the “World”

Page 39: Climbing the Ladder

Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 John 2:15

Page 40: Climbing the Ladder

This sounds like a contradiction but is not. The word “world” refers to two different things.

Page 41: Climbing the Ladder

The “World” that He loves and calls us to love describes the people in the world.

Page 42: Climbing the Ladder

The “World” that He does not love and commands us not to love is the world system and the values it is based on.

Page 43: Climbing the Ladder

It is described in the next verse in First John:

Page 44: Climbing the Ladder

For all that is in

the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the

world. 1 John 2:16

Page 45: Climbing the Ladder

We see three principles that underlie the whole system of the world that is not under God.

Page 46: Climbing the Ladder

The Lust of the Flesh

Page 47: Climbing the Ladder

The Lust of the Eyes

Page 48: Climbing the Ladder

The Pride of Life

Page 49: Climbing the Ladder

These three principles are the root motivations of all sin.

Page 50: Climbing the Ladder

They are the foundation of all human activity when it is ruled by the Kingdom of Darkness.

Page 51: Climbing the Ladder

The World’s plan is under the reign of the Devil.

Page 52: Climbing the Ladder

We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

1 John 5:19

Page 53: Climbing the Ladder

The Devil has no intent for good towards us.

Page 54: Climbing the Ladder

His greatest desire is to imprison us and destroy anything that resembles God’s plan in our lives.

Page 55: Climbing the Ladder

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8

Page 56: Climbing the Ladder

BUTHe will do everything he can do to make you believe that he is for you and that God is against you.

Page 57: Climbing the Ladder

We are told to intentionally fight against the Devil by resisting all of his plans both in his direct assault on us and in every other assult through

Page 58: Climbing the Ladder

and in every other assault through the world, our relationships and our own hearts.

Page 59: Climbing the Ladder

But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

1 Peter 5:9

Page 60: Climbing the Ladder

With these thoughts in mind I want to consider a great temptation for all of us concerning our destinies…..

Page 61: Climbing the Ladder

Jacob dreamed of a ladder to heaven….

Page 62: Climbing the Ladder

Since then people have talked about “Climbing the Ladder” of success.

Page 63: Climbing the Ladder

It has become almost a mantra of acceptability in every area of life.

Page 64: Climbing the Ladder

For the “World,” where you are on the “ladder” defines everything about you.

Page 65: Climbing the Ladder

In our generation perhaps our greatest temptation to forsake our destiny will be to view our lives through the lens of the World’s value system which the ladder represents.

Page 66: Climbing the Ladder

As someone once said of himself, “I’m not even on the bottom rung of the ladder of success…..

Page 67: Climbing the Ladder

I would love to think I am a Top end carnivore like a lion

Page 68: Climbing the Ladder

But I don’t even rank as a slightly ferocious kitty cat.

Page 69: Climbing the Ladder

I am really a paramecium (what amoebas eat) on the bottom end of the food chain.”

Page 70: Climbing the Ladder

The Ladder of Success can seem like the ladder to heaven

Page 71: Climbing the Ladder

If offers you fame, money, popularity, self-esteem or basically anything you want.

Page 72: Climbing the Ladder

But set out to climb it and you soon find out that there is a terrible cost to be paid.

Page 73: Climbing the Ladder

By Lust, Greed and Pride the ladder of success cripples and destroys all who climb its rungs.

Page 74: Climbing the Ladder

And this is because Lust of the Flesh, Lust of the Eyes and the Pride of Life are the prime motivators to climb.

Page 75: Climbing the Ladder

What effect does the ladder of success have on us?

Page 76: Climbing the Ladder

What effect does the ladder of success have on us?

Page 77: Climbing the Ladder

Like a Universal pyramid scheme

Page 78: Climbing the Ladder

The Ladder of Success always has winners and losers.

Page 79: Climbing the Ladder

It rewards a few with unimaginable rewards.

Page 80: Climbing the Ladder

And leaves many Bankrupt.

Page 81: Climbing the Ladder

How can we recognize when we are starting to climb the ladder?

Page 82: Climbing the Ladder

The single most important indicator to show us we have begun to climb the ladder

Page 83: Climbing the Ladder

Is the answer to one essential question….

Page 84: Climbing the Ladder

Where do you derive your identity, value and sense of security?

Page 85: Climbing the Ladder

Do you ever feel that you are inferior?

Page 86: Climbing the Ladder

Or Superior?

Page 87: Climbing the Ladder

Do you believe you are worth only what everyone else tells you you are worth?

Page 88: Climbing the Ladder

Or that you have to do something that is not really you to succeed?

Page 89: Climbing the Ladder

That you have to be someone that you are not on the inside to gain approval?

Page 90: Climbing the Ladder

That you have to compromise godly values to get ahead?

Page 91: Climbing the Ladder

Do you ever feel unthankful for your unchangebles?

Page 92: Climbing the Ladder

Do you ever feel jealous of others?

Page 93: Climbing the Ladder

Do you believe that you are only worth what you produce?

Page 94: Climbing the Ladder

How smart you are?

Page 95: Climbing the Ladder

How Famous you are?

Page 96: Climbing the Ladder

Where you are located on the authority ladder?

Page 97: Climbing the Ladder

How many women or men are attracted to you …. Or not?

Page 98: Climbing the Ladder

How much money you have?

Page 99: Climbing the Ladder

How many friends you have?

Page 100: Climbing the Ladder

All of these and many more related to them are the very subtle ways the World sends it messages and we receive them.

Page 101: Climbing the Ladder

Any answer except, I derive my identity, value and security from God

Page 102: Climbing the Ladder

Who loved me so much that He gave His only Son Jesus to show me how much I am loved,

Page 103: Climbing the Ladder

Is the answer that says you are climbing the world’s ladder.

Page 104: Climbing the Ladder

So you say, “I understand this but I want to make my mark on the world.”

Page 105: Climbing the Ladder

So why should I not climb it?

Page 106: Climbing the Ladder

You might say, “It seems that doing things God’s way just doesn’t seem to work….”

Page 107: Climbing the Ladder

Let’s seriously consider if the World’s way works first?

Page 108: Climbing the Ladder

Name the richest man or woman on Earth.

Page 109: Climbing the Ladder

What does their money ultimately do for them?

Page 110: Climbing the Ladder

It may do all kinds of things but the one thing it cannot do is what the Beatles said many years ago…..

Page 111: Climbing the Ladder

It cannot buy them love.

Page 112: Climbing the Ladder

Anyone who loves someone will have to do it if they were the poorest person or the richest person on Earth…..

Page 113: Climbing the Ladder

Or it won’t be love

Page 114: Climbing the Ladder

What about the most beautiful,Handsome, famous, or powerful person on earth?

Page 115: Climbing the Ladder

A debilitating disease or accident can end it all in a moment.

Page 116: Climbing the Ladder

And what they will have left is what all of us can have.

Page 117: Climbing the Ladder

The knowledge that before we had it all God loved us

Page 118: Climbing the Ladder

And when we lost it all God still loved us.

Page 119: Climbing the Ladder

The whole world system is based on the lie that says, I will be loved, esteemed, valued, praised….

Page 120: Climbing the Ladder

For some quality that I have….

Page 121: Climbing the Ladder

Rather than the relationship I have with the one who loves me more than life itself….

Page 122: Climbing the Ladder

It is a lie!

Page 123: Climbing the Ladder

Ask Howard Hughes, one time the wealthiest and perhaps most powerful man on the planet.

Page 124: Climbing the Ladder

He died insane and in total isolation. Used by so many but loved perhaps only by God.

Page 125: Climbing the Ladder

There are thousands of stories that are the same….

Page 126: Climbing the Ladder

All we need do is look into the infallible word of History and we will see the truth.

Page 127: Climbing the Ladder

The problem with the world’s ladder is it is all about me…..

Page 128: Climbing the Ladder

But what about the ladder that Jacob saw?

Page 129: Climbing the Ladder

Did you notice that God never asked Jacob to climb that ladder?

Page 130: Climbing the Ladder

It was not a ladder for Jacob to climb up…..

Page 131: Climbing the Ladder

It was the ladder for God to climb down.

Page 132: Climbing the Ladder

Jacob’s destiny was a work that God himself planned before he was born.

Page 133: Climbing the Ladder

The ladder of his generations would be the way God would finally step into time.

Page 134: Climbing the Ladder

"Your descendants will also "Your descendants will also be like the dust of the be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the out to the west and to the east and to the north and east and to the north and to the south; and in you to the south; and in you and in your descendants and in your descendants shall all the families of the shall all the families of the earth be blessed. earth be blessed.

Genesis 28:14Genesis 28:14

Page 135: Climbing the Ladder

A virgin from Jacob’s family line would conceive and bear a son.

Page 136: Climbing the Ladder

His name would be called Emmanuel.

Page 137: Climbing the Ladder

Meaning God with us.

Page 138: Climbing the Ladder

Jacob’s DNA would be the ladder for the saviour to come to earth,

Page 139: Climbing the Ladder

And remain with us forever.

Page 140: Climbing the Ladder

We don’t climb the ladder to him.

Page 141: Climbing the Ladder

We would never make it.

Page 142: Climbing the Ladder

He climbed down the ladder to us.

Page 143: Climbing the Ladder

To show us that he loved each one of us…..

Page 144: Climbing the Ladder

Not because of anything we are, do, accomplish…

Page 145: Climbing the Ladder

Or what others think of us….

Page 146: Climbing the Ladder

But simply that He loves us because He made us.

Page 147: Climbing the Ladder

He made us with a destiny

Page 148: Climbing the Ladder

And whatever the details of that destiny may be in the specifics for each of us,

Page 149: Climbing the Ladder

It is at the heart, to become like Jesus

Page 150: Climbing the Ladder

And like Jacob to become a new ladder from Heaven….

Page 151: Climbing the Ladder

That He might climb down and touch the lives of those whose lives we touch.

Page 152: Climbing the Ladder

What brings true success is knowing Jesus’ love for us and following his lead.

Page 153: Climbing the Ladder

And giving His love to others.

Page 154: Climbing the Ladder
