All three dogs are trained to help retrieve birds. Both Raina and Heidi started their hunting career as guide dogs at Oakhill Hunting Preserve. Oakhill Hunting Preserve is in Fond du Lac County owned by Paul and Jan Snider, W8718 Forest Avenue, Eldorado, WI 54932 In Heidi and Raina’s first two years, they pointed and retrieved over 300 birds.

Over the last three years of operating the preserve, Rod and Wendy, have seen and learned quite a bit and have some recommendations for those who may be interested in learning how to hunt with their dogs:

1. Start by taking a hunters safety course or participating in a “Learn to Hunt” program. Rooster’s Run and Wings Over Wisconsin- Beaver Dam Chapter are planning a “Learn to Hunt” program.

2. In order for a dog to be a good hunter, you need to put your dog in front of birds. This means to train your dog, train your dog using birds, or they will have a very difficult time when you do take them hunting.

3. It is possible to plant 2,000 trees the day before you get married...Just ask Rod, he did it the day before Wendy and he got married in 2006. In fact, he finished planting the last few trees the day of their wedding.

4. Rod has found when hunters hunt their dogs together although not always, but more times than not his philosphy proves out that 1 dog is good; 2 dogs are 1/2 as good; and 3 dogs are a disaster.

5. It is important to take care of your dog/ dogs by taking them to the vet and conditioning them for the hunt. Conditioning should be a year round activity. If conditioning is done during the hunting season, the dog will not reach it’s full potential.

For a very enjoyable hunt, or dog training classes, call Rooster’s Run at 920-296-4947. Oh, and when you are there, remember to ask to see the beautiful exotic pheasants.

Business mixes pleasure with hobbies and training

As you drive down County Road C from Hwy 151 near Beaver Dam, you see big dairy farms, small farmettes, beautiful countryside, and several very nice wooded areas which would be great for hunting. But, there is one area on County Road C that as you drive by, one thinks “Wow, this is really pretty and one can only imagine this would make for some great hunting!” This particular area on County Road C is owned by Rod and Wendy Bensley, who operate Rooster’s Run, a pheasant hunting preserve consisting of over 200 acres.

When you meet Rod and Wendy, you will immediately sense the passion both share for hunting and their preserve. When full the preserve has over 800 birds with double that amount being hunted by the end of the bird season. The hunting season is from September 1 to March 30.

Plus, they also own exotic pheasants. When asked what prompted them to purchase the exotics, both answered: because of the uniqueness and beauty of the birds.

Both Rod and Wendy agree that the best part of owning their hunting preserve is meeting people from all over the country. The further distance one of their hunters has traveled is from Loveland, Colorado. They have also had hunters from Michigan and Illinois to name just a few other states.

Rooster’s Run offers four different areas to hunt. There are day rates, group rates and annual memberships available.

In addition to guided hunts, Rooster’s Run also offers dog training. Rod and Wendy have three dogs: Two German Shorthairs - Raina and Heidi, and one Yellow Lab - Daisy.

Ironman Wisconsin 2012Team In Training

Rita Hookstead Fundraiser

Five years ago this past May, we heard the words a family never wants to hear: “Jeff, you have cancer.” It was Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Thankfully, they caught Dr. Jeff’s cancer in the early stages. After three months of chemotherapy and three weeks of radiation, Dr. Jeff had completed all of his treatments. We are very blessed and very grateful that he is now five years out from this particular diagnosis and has received all good reports. But, having experienced this medical event in our lives, it has made us more aware of those also battling cancer.

In 2010, Dr. Jeff and I trained and took part in Ironman Wisconsin. It was Dr. Jeff’s intent to raise funds for cancer research, but unfortunately we weren’t really sure just how to go about the fundraising for such a day. Since that Ironman, we have looked into ways to help make a difference for those battling blood cancers. It has been through “Team in Training” with the help of Janel DeZarn that we will be raising funds toward the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as I take part in Ironman Wisconsin 2012. Please help make a difference. My goal is to raise $5,000 before September 9, 2012.

Training for this Ironman has been significantly different than training for Ironman 2010. First and foremost, it will only be me. I won’t have Dr. Jeff encouraging me on the bike, which is my weakest leg of the triathlon, or running along side me throughout the entire marathon. Simply put, this will be much more mentally challenging than anything I have ever tried to accomplish. Exciting as my races have been this summer, and how well training has been coming along, I am going to need all the support I can muster on September 9th. Please feel free to come and cheer on the participants. Plus, if you want to see something truly amazing, come to the start of the swim and see 2400 athletes in Lake Monona. Simply an incredible sight. Thank you very very much.

CALYPSO The featured canine for this week is Calypso. She came to the shelter as an owner sur-

render due to no fault of her own. Calypso is a female Plott Hound mix about 6 years old. She has already been spayed and will be up to date on her vaccinati ons before she leaves the shelter. Calypso gets along well with cats, she seems to be okay around other dogs but she is very cauti ous and needs to be introduced to them slowly. For more informati on on

Calypso please call the Dodge County Humane Society at 920-386-0000.

LIBERTYThis week’s featured feline is Liberty. She came to the shelter as a stray. Liberty is a calico female about two years old. She has been spayed and up to date on most of her vac-cinati ons since her stay here at the shelter. Liberty is not really sure yet what she thinks of

other cats, so therefore we prefer she be the only feline in the home. For more informati on on Liberty please call the Dodge County Humane Society at 920-386-0000.
