COMPLETEHEALTHCARE

Our philosophy is simple—Complete Healthcare. We discovered a long time ago that chiropractic was not the “end all treatment” for our patients. Instead, we found that they had much higher success rates when we combined conservative chiropractic adjustments with treatments such as massage and acupuncture. Today, we have evolved our practice to also include physical therapy. This unique combination of specialties that are normally found in individual settings allows our patients access to complete treatment from start to finish in one convenient location. Our doctors and therapists work closely with one another on each individual case, to ensure the quickest recovery times possible. From treating infants to the elderly, the common back ache to auto accident rehabilitation, Scott Family Health is with you every step of the way.

Over the years, the profession of chiropractic has been plagued by a bad reputation. Unfortunately, most of it has been self created by bad business practices, lengthy and unnecessary treatment plans, and scare tactics. When doctors Trenton and Gina Scott opened their practice in Loveland, CO in 1995, they quickly realized that not all chiropractors were created equal. With an abundance of providers in town, each clinic had to fi nd a way to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. The gimmicks were endless from free x-rays, to fancy machines, and rock bottom prices. The focus was making money, not helping patients. The Scott’s knew that this wasn’t how they wanted to run their business. They also knew that what was going on around them was going to change the face of chiropractic, and like it or not, that would have an impact on what others thought of them. “At fi rst we were following the herd of other chiropractic clinics. Not one clinic was out-pacing or setting new standards. We were all following each other to nowhere,” recalled Dr. Trenton Scott. Then he had a realization, “We had to separate our business plan from our treatment plans.” This philosophy was an inconceivable concept for most chiropractors, even today. But, Dr. Scott believed that if he put his patients’ needs fi rst, then the rest of the business would fall into place. “I wanted to feel good about myself at the end of the day. I became a chiropractor because I wanted to help people, not because I wanted to make money.”

Times were tough in those early days and the Scott’s made a lot of sacrifi ces to realize their vision. “Trent and I worked without a staff for almost one year. We answered the phone, scheduled appointments, and treated patients. I even worked another job to make ends meet,” Dr. Gina Scott remembers.

The new clinic located in the 34 Marketplace.

“Our faith and moral compass helped us to focus on what our patients needed, not what our business needed.” They stuck fi rmly to their new business plan and watched as the clinic began to grow.

As the years passed, the clinic continued to grow and expand upon offered services. The Scott’s knew that chiropractic treatments were benefi cial, but sometimes limited. They realized the benefi t that alternative treatments could provide to their patients, which led to the addition of massage therapy and acupuncture treatments. In the summer of 2011, they hired a physical therapist and had the building remodeled to create a large physical therapy gym within the existing chiropractic clinic.

This multi-disciplinary approach was reinforced after the Scott’s youngest child became seriously ill and the family found themselves at Children’s Hospital in Denver, CO. “It was amazing because Clara had every specialist reviewing her case, giving their opinion, and ruling things out,” recalls Dr. Gina Scott. “Having all of the doctors collaborating in one location saved time and helped us reach her diagnosis much quicker.” The Scott’s knew that this approach worked wonders for patients because they were already practicing it in their own clinic.

“Each of our providers is a specialist in their respective fi eld. As a chiropractor I can recommend exercises for your back, but exercise is not my specialty. That’s why I have a staff of other specialists to refer to. It ensures that each patient’s specifi c condition is handled by the provider most suited to treat that condition,” explains Dr. Trenton Scott. “I’ve never been too proud to admit that someone or something else is what the patient needs. My job is to make sure patients get the appropriate treatment, whomever that might be with.”

In early 2012, the clinic changed its name to Scott Family Health to refl ect the fact that it is now a full service healthcare facility. Today, the clinic is comprised of a dozen employees and six different specialties. “Scott Family Health believes in the sum of its parts, no one practitioner or employee is greater than another,” says Dr. Trenton Scott.

Throughout the years, Scott Family Health has proven time and again why they aren’t your typical chiropractic clinic. The secret to their success has been a desire to continually improve patient outcomes. They don’t sell pillows or supplements, and they don’t rely on fad equipment to treat their patients. Instead, they focus on honest, conservative, and individualized care that’s diagnosis based and delivered by a team of specialists.

DIAGNOSIS

Perhaps the most important aspect of treatment at Scott Family Health is proper diagnosis. Our doctors are committed to accurately diagnosing

each patient’s specific condition. An initial chiropractic visit begins with a consultation, a

complete health history review, and a thorough examination. The examination consists of the

following tests: orthopaedic, reflexes, muscular, range of motion, neurological, and functional.

Objective studies such as x-rays, CT scans, or MRI’s may be determined necessary after

the exam reveals a working diagnosis. Our doctors are very conservative in their ordering

of radiology tests and will do so only when they feel that it is appropriate. We also do not take

x-rays here in the clinic. Instead, we refer all of our imaging to radiology centers (normally

Skyline or Harmony Imaging), where they can be performed using the latest equipment. This

also gives our doctors an unbiased professional report from the radiologist.

Page 11: CLINIC GUIDE

Our patients have full access to our web based library of dozens of educational diagnosis videos. We have found that the videos are very helpful for patients to reference and gain a further understanding their diagnosis. They’re also a great resource for patients wanting to share their diagnosis information with a spouse or family member that didn’t come to the appointment with them. 11

Once the doctor has completed the exam, history, and reviewed any necessary imaging they can determine a diagnosis. This allows the doctor to triage the patient to the appropriate services and providers for their specific condition. By getting the patient in with the provider that is most effective at treating their specific condition, we can significantly decrease the number of overall visits that a patient will need.

After 17 years of practice, Dr. Scott has developed very reliable treatment protocols for each diagnosis. For example, certain conditions respond very quickly to a short course of acupuncture treatments followed by a couple of chiropractic adjustments, while other conditions benefit soley from chiropractic care. The diagnosis also acts as a common language between all of the providers at Scott Family Health. Every provider is trained to understand each diagnosis and the corresponding response times. If a patient is not progressing with the protocol for their diagnosis, they may need to have further studies like an MRI performed, or they may need to have their condition re-evaluated by the doctor. Our commitment to properly diagnosing and educating our patients is such that it is the first tenet of our mission statement: “To educate, serve, and inspire well-being one individual at a time.” Every patient is also shown an educational diagnosis video that they are able to view again online at home. We arm our patients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their treatment options. It also gives them an understanding of the activities they should temporarily avoid and a realistic expectation about the length of treatment they will need and the outcomes they can expect.

Our doctors are committed to accurately diagnosing every patient. Many of our patients come from other chiropractors and say they

were “diagnosed” with low back pain. They

are often surprised to find out that low back pain is just a symptom and not an actual diagnosis. The actual diagnosis could be something

more serious like an Annular Disc Tear or a

Retrolisthesis. Having a clearly defined diagnosis is the key to proper treatment.

Is It Just Low Back Pain Or something more serious?

Chiropractic is a health care approach that focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure (primarily the spine and nervous system) and the body’s ability to function. People seek chiropractic care for many conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, automobile trauma, sports injuries and general well-being. Daniel David Palmer founded the modern profession of chiropractic in 1895. Palmer theorized that many of the disorders that affect general health are caused by misalignments of the spine, called subluxations, which interfere with the function of the spinal cord and nervous system. Palmer believed that correcting these “subluxations” could normalize the function of the nervous system and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Modern science is now proving this to be true.

While there are several chiropractic schools, Palmer is considered to be the best. All of our chiropractors are Palmer graduates.

“Fantastic group of doctors... these aren't your father's chiropractors! Their ability to diagnose quickly and proficiently is amazing. They won't have you coming back time after time for

"corrective care." They've always been straight up honest and completely up-front with me. I don't give recommendations easily but these folks are amazing. They are a must to have in

your healthcare corner!” -Shane S.

“The doctors and staff at Scott Family are wonderful! They treat you like part of their own family. It is also great to be able to have chiropractic, massage and acupuncture all in one

place. I would highly recommend them!” -Tonya C.

“Best Chiropractic Care in Loveland! I have nothing but good things to say about Scott Family. The care and service is top notch . I appreciate that they do not try force you to see them after you feel fine. If you feel fine, no need to make another appointment unless you

feel you need to. This cannot be said of other practices. Great staff and great service!” -Jeff G.

“I have been going to Scott Family for 3 years. I chose them originally because they offered chiropractic and acupuncture in one convenient location. I have been very impressed with

the treatment in both areas. The doctors and staff are always friendly, professional, and compassionate. I am glad to have made the best choice for my chiropractic and acupuncture

health care.” - Kathy K.

“I have used Scott Family for many years for an occasional

adjustment, but recently I received excellent treatment due to

a car accident. The care and understanding for my situation has been exceptional! Everyone in this office is friendly, competent,

and truly care about healing you.” -Rachel A.

Page 17: CLINIC GUIDE

There are more than 6 million automobile accidents each year in the United States, resulting in roughly 2 million permanent injuries. That means that someone is injured in an auto accident every 14 seconds. Experts agree that injuries can be sustained at speeds as low as 10-25 miles per hour. Research has shown that there is not a direct relationship between the damage to the vehicle and the damage to passengers. While the car might have minimal damage, the driver might have sustained more serious injuries.

One of the most common injuries resulting from an auto accident is whiplash. It can sometimes take hours, days, and even weeks for symptoms to develop. These injuries can present further complications to treatment since soft tissues and nerves do not show up on x-rays; therefore it is hard for medical doctors to treat injuries that they cannot see. They often prescribe pain killers or muscle relaxers to treat the symptoms, rather than treating the actual injury.

The doctors at Scott Family Health have been treating auto accident rehabilitation cases since

PERSONALINJURY

opening their doors in 1995. They specialize in treating soft tissue and nerve injuries.

Chiropractors are specifically trained to treat the spine, muscles, nerves, and ligaments. Initially after an accident, most patients benefit from soft tissue treatments like massage and acupuncture. Chiropractic treatments can be

“peppered” into this treatment plan. Later, patients can progress from passive

care into active treatment with physical therapy sessions.

Throughout the course of treatment, the doctor will reassess the patient’s progress and modify treatment intervals until they can be released from care.

Our doctors and therapists are known throughout the medical

and legal community for their thorough and conservative treatment of

auto accident cases. Our office works closely with personal injury attorneys to help our patients recover their financial losses from very serious accidents. We’re also happy to work with other medical providers and attorneys to resolve claims quickly.

1Acupuncture has been employed as

a health care modality for over 3,000 years and is widely accepted as a trusted form of treatment.

2Studies suggest that asthma symptoms

are markedly improved with acupuncture, and that treatments can also lead to reduced dosages of medication.

3The journal Fertility and Sterility found

that acupuncture improved pregnancy success rates by 50% in women undergoing in-vitro fertilization.

4Since 1974, acupuncture has

been used in the U.S. to effectively treat a wide range of conditions including smoking, drug and alcohol addictions.

Many people avoid acupuncture because they are scared of needles. However, acupuncture needles are incredibly fine—generally the thickness of a cat’s whisker. Note in the image at the right that the hollow hypodermic needle most people are familiar with is considerably larger in diameter than the solid acupuncture needle below it.

Size Really Does MatterWhen it comes to the gage of a needle

Acupuncture is a non-invasive, drug-free approach to re-establishing neurological function in the body by promoting circulation and muscle relaxation. Although the thought of needles invokes fear in some, the procedure is relatively painless and highly relaxing. Only factory sterilized, single-use needles are utilized. The needles are flexible and about as thin as a cat’s whisker. Believe it or not, but many patients actually fall asleep on the table while the needles are in. Acupuncture is an extremely effective treatment for not only pain, but a wide variety of health conditions and concerns including:

Headaches Digestive Complaints Sciatica Depression Osteoarthritis AllergiesFertility Issues Women’s Issues Addiction

According to the Mayo Clinic, 10-15% of couples in the United States are struggling with infertility. It is a problem that affects both men and women equally. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies have been used to treat infertility for centuries, and they are endorsed as safe and effective treatments by many medical doctors.

If you or someone you know is suffering from infertility consider this:

Kinesio Taping

At Scott Family Health, our hands-on approach begins with a detailed examination, evaluation, and diagnosis. Each initial evaluation is scheduled for 60 minutes and includes a thorough medical history, a history of the current condition, posture assessment, neurological

screening, and other tests to gain a specific understanding of your

condition. We then develop a program based on the identified problems and your personal goals. Our ultimate goal is to restore a maximum level of function and help prevent re-injury.

Dr. Kelly Mortellite is a highly trained manual physical therapist

who has completed extensive continuing education and specializes in

rehabilitation therapy for people with injuries from motor vehicle accidents, complicated spinal disorders, sports injuries, and post-surgical cases. Each patient is treated in one-on-one appointments with Dr. Mortellite. She uses various methods such as stretching the joint structures, applying electrical stimulation or ultrasound therapies, traction, and kinesio taping.

Believe it or not, but physical therapy actually has roots dating back to 460 BC. Ancient Greek physicians, Hippocrates and Galenus, were the first to practice physical therapy by advocating massage, manual therapy, and hydrotherapy to patients. Treatments evolved over time and by the late 19th century modern physical therapy was established in Britain. Events such as WWI and the Polio outbreak of the 1950’s increased the demand for physical therapy and helped define the specialty within the medical community.

Today, physical therapists are licensed health care professionals trained to analyze movement and identify abnormal mechanics that lead to pain and dysfunction. They treat a wide variety of disorders and conditions involving the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Physical therapy is often a major part of the rehabilitation process following surgery, auto accidents, and injuries. However, it is also very effective in the treatment of muscle and joint pain, headaches, decreased range of motion, pain associated with pregnancy, and balance disorders.

PHYSICALTHERAPY

1Kinesio taping was developed by a Japanese chiropractor in the

1970’s. It’s popularity has greatly increased since it’s appearance in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It has a wide variety of applications such as relaxing overused muscles, reducing inflammation and pain, and improving circulation. It can also be used to limit or encourage a specific motion in joints.

2Exercise balls have become regular fixtures in many

workouts. The primary benefit of exercising with one of these balls is that the instability of the ball causes the body to engage many more muscles in the abdomen and back than normal to remain balanced. Over time, those muscles become stronger and more balanced.

3Whether you’re trying to regain strength and

conditioning after an injury or surgery, overcome persistent pain, or simply learn better body mechanics, Dr. Mortellite is here for you. She will work closely with you develop a specific treatment plan that encourages you to actively participate in your rehabilitation.

Kelly moved to Colorado following the completion of her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree which she received from Duke University in 2009. Prior to that, she earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati in Health Sciences with a Sports and Biomechanics concentration.

Kelly has experience providing physical therapy for both orthopedic and neurologic conditions across the lifespan, treating children through the geriatric population. She has had research published in the Physical Therapy Journal and she has presented at national American Physical Therapy Association conferences. Kelly is always pursuing continuing education opportunities and appreciates teaching and empowering her patients on the path to recovery.

Massage therapy has been practiced in various forms for thousands of years. In its earliest appearance, Chinese texts from 2700 BC speak of the benefits of massage therapy. Egyptian wall paintings depicting massage have been found in tombs dating back to 2500 BC and Greek athletes in 800 BC utilized a form of sports massage to treat their physical injuries. Today, massage therapy has evolved to include over 80 different styles with varying pressures, movements, and techniques.

Massage therapy is designed to address soft tissue injuries and damage within the body. It increases circulation, re-sets normal resting muscle tone, improves range of motion, and increases function of the body. Experts agree that massage therapy is effective in relieving acute and chronic pain from musculoskeletal injuries and other causes. It has also been used to treat headaches, migraines, insomnia, osteoarthritis, side effects from cancer treatments, anxiety, stress, and pain associated with pregnancy.

Our therapists work on a wide range of conditions—primarily sports related injuries, automobile accident rehabilitation, and neuromuscular pain. However, they also regularly perform prenatal, Swedish, and relaxation massage as well. Each massage session is tailored to your specific diagnosis to maximize therapeutic benefit and shorten the overall length of your course of treatment.

NUTRITION

Let’s face it—we’re all busy. We could go on and on about all of the daily stresses and the seemingly endless list of tasks that we have on a daily basis. Sometimes you feel like a

superhero for completing them—but, in all honesty, it’s just LIFE. And, often times, life becomes a convenient excuse for the reasons we take shortcuts. Everyone has made a quick run through the drive thru instead of cooking dinner, or let the kids have a cookie instead of fighting with them to eat a healthy snack, and who hasn’t skipped breakfast because, “There just wasn’t enough time.” But, these small shortcuts can add up very quickly and even worse they can lead to bad habits that become part of our daily routine. Nutrition probably isn’t at the top of your to-do

list, but it should be. Many common health problems can be prevented or alleviated with a healthy diet. The food we eat literally turns into fuel for our brain and bodies to operate at their peak performance. When we consume meals comprised of fatty foods our bodies stop everything they are doing to focus on digesting that meal. Think about it—remember the last time you had a greasy cheeseburger and fries for lunch and couldn’t focus on anything back at the office? Many people reach for energy drinks or caffeine to give them a boost, but they would be better off practicing High Energy Eating. By

selecting the right foods to eat throughout the day, you can actually boost your

energy naturally. Our nutritionist can work with you one on one to

design a customized nutrition program to meet your specific goals and needs.

27

Page 28: CLINIC GUIDE

Mix it up! Interval and circuit training are the best ways to keep your heart rate up during a workout. This will allow your body to burn calories at a faster rate for up to 36 hours after your workout. Conversely, doing just one exercise, like running, for the same amount of time will not keep your heart rate up and will not encourage the caloric burn as effectively.

Are you drinking enough water? Here’s a simple trick to figure out exactly how much water you should drink every day: Take your weight in pounds and divide by 2. This is the number of ounces of water you should be drinking each day. For example: An individual weighing 150 pounds should drink 75 ounces of water every day.

In the summer of 2011, Scott Family Health remodeled to incorporate a large physical therapy clinic within the main clinic. The result is an open, airy, and naturally lit treatment space.

The massage rooms are decorated with plants, artwork, and fountains. Soft lighting and other touches contribute to the spa like atmosphere.

Our chiropractic rooms feature several types of tables. The various styles can accommodate pregnant bellies, handicapped patients, and the elderly.

The acupuncturists only use single-use sterilized needles. Used needles are properly disposed of in hazardous waste material containers.

Interactive VideosDr. Scott worked closely with Madwire

Media to develop a series of over 50 educational diagnosis videos. These are

their specific condition.

TECHNOLOGY Scott Family Health has been on the forefront of technological advancements in the practice of healthcare. In 2010, the clinic purchased an Electronic Health Record and began the lengthy process of customizing it to the specific needs of each individual practitioner in the clinic. After hundreds of hours of preparation and training, the system was launched in September of 2011. The new system offers many advantages including: seamless and immediate communication between providers, integration of imaging studies directly into the patient’s electronic file, and it has eliminated the need for paper charts.

In the summer of 2011, the clinic installed 45” Hi-Definition television monitors in each of the chiropractic treatment rooms. These monitors allow the doctors to display radiology images in a large and clear format, rather than the old fashioned light boxes of the past. The TV’s are also used to play educational videos, so that patients can gain further insight into their specific condition.

In late 2011, our focus shifted to concentrate on improving patient experiences. We began by using an automated appointment reminder service, to help patients remember their scheduled visits. In early 2012, the clinic introduced on-line scheduling through schedulicity.com. Our patients can quickly login from any computer or smart phone and make or change their own appointments. We also started a text alert program to notify patients of last minute openings for massage and acupuncture services that are offered at heavily discounted rates.

36

Automated Appointment RemindersSince 2011, we have been sending automated appointment reminders to our patients 48

hours prior to their scheduled appointment time. This greatly reduces the number of missed appointments and allows us to fill cancelled appointments with waitlisted patients.

Page 37: CLINIC GUIDE

At schedulicity.com our patients can quickly and easily book their own appointments. The program also sends them e-mail reminders of their appointments.

As part of the PAC System, we can download high

resolution images from the internet. Hi-Defi nition TV

monitors allow the doctors to show radiology images in a large format. This method is far superior to old printed

fi lms or CD images.

Convenient On-Line Scheduling

Electronic RecordsAll of the providers use electronic medical records to write their notes, either on a PC or an iPad. The entire offi ce has undergone an extensive conversion process to become paperless. The electronic records create a seamless fl ow of information and communication between all of the providers.

Accident AppWe also have a free auto accident app that immediately launches after an accident.

The live operator walks patients through every action they should take—Just like OnStar, but FREE. It even takes satellite photos of the accident, records the weather

conditions, calls 911, and creates an e-mail fi le of all of the information that can be sent to medical providers and attorneys if needed. Simply search for “Accident

Wizard” in the App Store.

On April 10, 2007 we lost a former employee, Sierra Krizman, to bacterial meningitis. Her family organized Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis as an annual fundraiser to sponsor free vaccination clinics and scholarship funds, in the hopes that no other family would have to suffer the same tragedy. Our clinic is a proud supporter of the event and we also volunteer a free massage clinic on race day each year.

OUR COMMUNITY

Page 39: CLINIC GUIDE

For the past few years, Scott Family Health has been on a mission to change the face of healthcare. Rising insurance premiums, limited benefits, high deductibles, and the uncertainty of socialized medicine are just some of the topics that have been on our radar. Not to mention the fact that many patients can’t afford to pay for non-covered services like massage and acupuncture out of their own pockets. Rather than waiting to see what the future brings, we’ve been searching for a solution for our patients.

In an effort to solve this problem, Dr. Scott developed a Corporate Wellness Program. Essentially the program fills in the gaps for services that often aren’t covered under traditional health insurance. The employer pays a minimal fee per employee each month, which entitles employees to a highly reduced flat fee for services. The program is unique because it covers every employee, whether they were just hired today or started with the company when it opened. It also allows access to spouses, children, and significant others. Our program is exclusive of insurance and covers every service in our clinic, as well as general office visits with Dr. Steven Huneycutt, M.D. Members simply present their card when checking out to receive the discounted rate. Insurance is completely removed from the equation. It’s still tax deductible for the employer, and since it also includes the services of an M.D., the company can cut back on their health insurance plan and switch to a deductible plan with an HSA. This saves money for the employer and employee,

CORPORATE WELLNESS

and it actually increases the number of services that are

covered. In early 2012, Scott Family Health

partnered with Madwire Media to test a pilot version of the program. Their 100 employees have access to all of our services for a single flat fee. In just a few short months, we have had hundreds of visits from these employees and the M.D. has also treated many of the employees as well. We’ve had a huge demand for massage therapy and acupuncture since these services weren’t covered under the company’s health insurance plan. Madwire has also used this program as a selling feature of their benefits package—new employees can start using these benefits immediately which is very appealing since they don’t normally have access to the company’s health insurance benefits for three months.

Passive treatments such as physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and massage therapy treat 90% of employees’ physical ailments. When employees take advantage of these wellness services the company sees fewer sick days and work related injuries, and a boost in the overall health of their employees. By partnering with corporations, Scott Family Health can customize it’s care to the company’s workers, jobs, and facilities. Our Corporate Wellness Program is not an insurance replacement. Instead, it was designed to act as gap coverage for high deductible insurance plans or coverage for small companies that cannot afford insurance premiums. We encourage companies to retain a high deductible health insurance plan with an HSA account to cover major medical expenses.
