Movement-needling Technique, a new acupunc- ture therapy, is based on traditional acupuncture therapy and anatomical principle, combining acupuncture and movement. Combining disease and syndrome differentiation, and integrating TCM and Western medical diagnosis, this technique is used to treat different diseases mainly with acupuncture, combining some movement in needling. These movements not only boost therapeutic effects of acupuncture, but also add new contents to traditional acupuncture. There are three kinds of movements, active movement, passive movement and adjuvant movement, in the Movement-needling Technique. At present, about 120 kinds of diseases could be treated with Movement-needling Technique. 1. Acupoints Main acupoints: O Yanglingquan (GB 34); (~) Houxi (SI 3); QLaozhen(EX); (~Yanglao (SI 6); (~ Waiguan (TE 5); @ Xuanzhong (GB 39) and Zhizheng (SI 7). Adjunct acupoints: In the presence of aching shoulder and back, Quyuan (SI 3) and Tianzong(SI 11) are added; in the presence of neck stiffness, Jianwaishu (SI 14) and Jianzhongshu (SI 15) are added; in the presence of inability to lift and bend the head, Renzhong (GV 26) and Kunlun (BL 60) are added; in the presence of inability to turn the head, Chengjiang (CV 24) is added. 2. Techniques The patient takes a sitting position. Any one of the above six groups of acupoints can be punctured with reducing techniques by lifting and thrusting and twirling the needles when Deqi is attained. In the manipulation of the needles, the patient is asked to lift and bend and turn the head for 3 min with increasing amplitude. Following an interval of 5 minutes, the needles are manipulated once more as before and then retained for 5-10 min. Moreover, the practitioner may chafe the diseased area and perform hot compression on this area, and acupoints Fengchi (GB 20) and Tianzhu (BL 10) can be pressed. In general, stiff neck can be cured after one or two treatments. Translator: XIAO Yuan-chun ( h" .,L-~g)

LIU Yan, born in 1941, professor. He is he vice-

president of needling and moxibustion branch of

Chinese Association of Acupuncture and Moxibustion.

He is accomplished in treating various diseases in clinic,

and his lectures in USA and Thailand were welcomed

greatly. He has published about 50 academic articles

and over 20 monographs such as Chinese Natural

Therapy, Chinese Collection of Extra-ordinary

Points, Chinese Collection of Movement-needling

Technique.

Movement-needling Technique, a new acupunc-

ture therapy, is based on traditional acupuncture therapy and anatomical principle, combining acupuncture and movement. Combining disease and syndrome differentiation, and integrating TCM and Western medical diagnosis, this technique is used to treat different diseases mainly with acupuncture,

combining some movement in needling. These

movements not only boost therapeutic effects of

acupuncture, but also add new contents to

traditional acupuncture.

There are three kinds of movements, active

movement, passive movement and adjuvant

movement, in the Movement-needling Technique. At

present, about 120 kinds of diseases could be treated

with Movement-needling Technique. 1. Acupoints Main acupoints: O Yanglingquan (GB 34); (~)

Houxi (SI 3); QLaozhen(EX); (~Yanglao (SI 6); (~

Waiguan (TE 5); @ Xuanzhong (GB 39) and

Zhizheng (SI 7).

Adjunct acupoints: In the presence of aching

shoulder and back, Quyuan (SI 3) and Tianzong(SI

11) are added; in the presence of neck stiffness,

Jianwaishu (SI 14) and Jianzhongshu (SI 15) are

added; in the presence of inability to lift and bend

the head, Renzhong (GV 26) and Kunlun (BL 60)

are added; in the presence of inability to turn the

head, Chengjiang (CV 24) is added. 2. Techniques The patient takes a sitting position. Any one of

the above six groups of acupoints can be punctured

with reducing techniques by lifting and thrusting

and twirling the needles when Deqi is attained. In

the manipulation of the needles, the patient is asked

to lift and bend and turn the head for 3 min with increasing amplitude. Following an interval of 5 minutes, the needles are manipulated once more as before and then retained for 5-10 min. Moreover, the practitioner may chafe the diseased area and perform hot compression on this area, and acupoints Fengchi (GB 20) and Tianzhu (BL 10)

can be pressed. In general, stiff neck can be cured

after one or two treatments.
