Motivation and Influence

A recent project commissioned in Australia, considered the factors that influence the choice of teaching as a career.

According to the research findings, the key motivating factors for choosing teaching include:

• Intrinsic career value

• Teaching ability

• Shaping the future of children/adolescents

• Subject interest

• Making social contribution.

Whilst, in John Hattie’s extensive research on factors that have an affect on student achievement, the teacher’s influence is second only to the students’ own capacities, mindsets and actions.

In short, the motivation to teach and the teacher’s ability to connect, understand, empathise and guide are critical to the wellbeing and learning of students, and by extension, the communities in which these same students connect, contribute and influence.

At Cornerstone, we have, and continue to be blessed with teachers with the motivations and abilities that make a sustained and constructive difference in the learning and lives of our students. There have also been key leaders to provide the vision, direction and support to ensure there is an ongoing culture of care, support and quality.

Rob Rohde, who has recently announced his intention to retire at the end of this year, has been one of the most important leaders, custodians and influencers of this culture over the last 21 years.

Rob has served as a teacher and leader in education for 45 years. He has shared his passion and used his abilities to contribute to the growth and development of people, particularly young people, teachers and those who support education. He has also shared and lived the Gospel with a sensitive courage and determined conviction.

Whilst we will obviously miss the ‘heart and head’ of Rob, his legacy will be an ongoing commitment to our mission, an understanding of the motivations, and a focus on practices that have the biggest influence on student wellbeing and learning.

Year 12 Results 2016Year 12 Results, 2016Congratulations to the Year 12s of 2016 on their great results. Of the students planning to complete SACE in 2016, 99.34% successfully achieved their SACE. As well as Leigh Stark, other outstanding results were attained by Hamish Fielke (99.5), Bianca Venner (99.45), Isabel Richards (98.25) and Sam Staska (96.2).

The average ATAR was 69.3. 18% of grades were As and 71% were As and Bs.

VET studies were undertaken by many students in this cohort with 46 students completing a certificate qualification as part of their SACE. Many of these students also attained an ATAR, as a Certificate 3 qualification is recognised by SATAC. Others have gone on to studies at TAFE or private providers. Some have successfully obtained apprenticeships.

Ninety-six students applied for courses at universities. A very large proportion of students have been offered places in their preferred courses, with 80% receiving either their first or second preference. This indicates most students achieved great results that enabled them to go on to their preferred vocation.

A wide variety of courses have been offered to the 2016 cohort: Applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Archaeology, Biotechnology, Creative Arts, Criminology, Education, Engineering, Health Science, International Studies, Journalism, Medical Science, Nursing, Paramedics, Pharmaceutical Science and Psychology.

Mr Rob Rohde, Acting Principal congratulates Mrs Mary Butler.

Global & CulturalChina Tour 2017For almost three weeks in April eight students and nineteen staff visited China. Here are some of the student reflections:

I stayed with a Chinese family and experienced life from a different perspective, and though there were language barriers, it was very interesting to live in a small apartment. Ruby

Even though there were many trials such as language, squat toilets and the constant feeling of being famous (from the “paparazzi”), the China trip was probably one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Kimberley

The culture is so rich and… ancient… so it was so interesting to visit temples and sites constructed thousands of years ago and learn the history behind every place, food, show and tradition we experienced. Madison

German Film and Raclette EveningOn Monday, 19 June, Year 12 German students enjoyed watching a German film and sharing a Raclette dinner after school. Raclette is a slow meal cooked at the table in a purpose-built grill. The key ingredient is cheese (Raclette is a type of cheese) which is melted over potatoes, bread, vegetables, sliced meats etc. This meal originated in Switzerland and is commonly enjoyed in European countries during the winter. The delicious food, warm ambience and great company inspired the Year 12s to speak German, both during the meal and while playing a German board game afterwards.

Indigenous Focus Week Focus Week is a time to reflect on our College commitment to Reconciliation in the lead up to National Reconciliation Week (NRW), starting on National Sorry Day, Friday, 26 May.

Our vision for Reconciliation is to build positive relationships and understanding between all members of our community, so they can continue to be ambassadors beyond their College life.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the original custodians of the land of Australia and our history, culture and identity are strongly linked to those Australians. We recognise the Peramangk people as the original custodians of the local land. Cornerstone College promotes the caring for and valuing of all people in a Christian context. Ms Jacinta Smart Educator/Aboriginal Education Focus Person

China Tour 2017Hai Dian International School was definitely a highlight for me as I loved seeing what the school was like. We thought we had it hard at Cornerstone going to school for 6 hours a day. However they have around 15 hour days. Hannah

The touring part of the trip was based on historical sites, like the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall of China. These were mind blowing to see as we were actually there, standing on centuries of history and Chinese culture. Emily

We share with you recent happenings from some of our sister Lutheran educators:

ST MARK’S LUTHERANSt Mark’s is on the mark!

St Mark’s has enjoyed a number of highlights during this first semester.

Through our Outdoor Education Program Year 3 students travelled to Aldinga Holiday Park where Active Education provided a focus on Indigenous art and culture. Students baked fish in clay pots, dot painted boomerangs, built wiltjas, discovered the secrets of the Australian bush supermarket and listened to Aboriginal Dreamings. Our Year 5 classes travelled to Ankara Campsite at Walker Flat. Student experiences focused on the history of the Murray River, water studies, water safety, team building and problem solving.

The wheels on the bus went round and round all the way down to the Adelaide Zoo this semester. This experience saw our Foundation students provided with an opportunity to view zoo animals and learn about what they need to survive in captivity.

During Term 1 students competed in our annual Twilight Sports Day. This is certainly a cause for colourful celebration with an opportunity for all children to participate in a variety of sporting events. Our winning team was Dunn!

Our House Sports Day saw our students play football, soccer and netball while our junior primary had a go at a variety of tabloid events. We thank our House Captains for their leadership in the coordination of their teams. Term 2 has also seen our students take on the challenge of dance through the organisation Dancify.

Sounds on Sunday was a wonderful opportunity for our students to share their musical talent.

This year, St Mark’s enjoys a school band of 44 students and a school choir of 59. Sounds on Sunday was an occasion for our piano, violin, flute, guitar, trumpet and trombone students to take to the stage for a either a solo or duet performance.

Our Open Day in March provided student leaders with the opportunity to not only promote the school’s engaging teaching programs but also our wonderful facilities. It’s always a delight to open our doors to others beyond our immediate community.

Special Friends’ Day was another memorable event with students having the opportunity to invite a special friend to visit for a morning. Our classrooms were filled to the brim with visitors. The delicious morning tea was hosted by our very active Parents’ and Friends’ Committee. All proceeds from the morning tea were donated to the Cancer Council.

Our Year 6 students braved the cold on Sunday, June 18 for their first Pedal Prix race of the season at Victoria Park, Adelaide. We congratulate our students for achieving 24th in their category. This is a wonderful achievement for both students and their families who support this sport.

Worship is very much at the heart of our school and this is witnessed through whole school Chapel on Fridays and fortnightly Junior and Senior Primary Chapel. Our students are privileged to be taught by individuals who demonstrate Christ’s love as they carry out their vocation as teachers.

Please join us in thanking God for the many blessings we have here at St Mark’s Lutheran.

ST MICHAEL’S LUTHERANTerm 2 brought lots of action in the Sporting Arena for St Michael’s students. Congratulations to the Cross Country team who competed in the Barker SAPSASA Cross Country Competition at Oakbank and managed to take the overall win for the day. This was an exceptional effort given that without Year 7 students, we do not have competitors in an entire age group.

Following this event many of our students competed in the SAPSASA State Championship cross country. Congratulations to Elle-Rose Shearer who won her division and will continue on to the National Championship. The Beginning Learning Community began winter with a Winter Woollies and Wellies day. They dressed in wintery clothes, played wintery games and talked about the concept of ‘change’. They also explored change through experimenting with ice, making jelly and popcorn and observing the changes, making ‘slime’ and thinking about snow. The day was made especially exciting by the very thick frost on the school oval that morning.

OPEN ARMS COMMUNITY CHILD CARE CENTREThis year the Open Arms Community Child Care Centre at Birdwood has offered the Universal Access preschool/kindy program for the first time.

Thanks to its small size, the program puts the child’s individual needs and interests at the centre.

The kindy program operates two days a week, and often uses space on the Lobethal Lutheran School (LLS) Campus. This partnership has offered new opportunities to the children of both sites through a buddy program and our Art program.

Kindy children are also learning Japanese through the national initiative Early Language Learning Australia, allowing LLS’s older children to practise their Japanese.

Through this connection, the kindy children preview the next stage of Lutheran education, and they’ll enjoy a smooth transition into LLS.

Families at both sites have learnt more about Lutheran education options across the Adelaide Hills.

Year 7 CampQuestion:What do you get when you combine 146 excited Year 7s, a great bunch of caring and enthusiastic teachers and an array of expert camp leaders?

Answer:An awesome Year 7 Camp.

Our Year 7s had a three day and two night action-packed camp at Mylor Baptist camp, 1-3 March. A highlight was the Talent Quest on the first night where we were entertained by a range of students. We had

singers, jugglers, stand-up comics, dancers and other assorted acts, including a much awaited performance of The Robot by one of our Year 7 teachers.

The students are to be commended on the way they supported each other and embraced our theme of ‘We Love. We Learn. We Grow.’ throughout the course of the three days.

Mrs Leanne FilmerMiddle School Learning Leader

QR AdventureWe travelled by bus to Adelaide to participate in finding QR codes all around the city. Our job was to scan our codes and use our phone’s GPS systems to locate destinations and answer the questions given to us.

Some highlights of the day were visiting the Adelaide Museum, Rundle Mall and the Adelaide Oval. Many of the places were very educational and interesting.

The day was great and I loved walking around with my group members, Imogen, Sophie and Georgia, as we had lots of fun, even though we got lost sometimes. The day was a great experience and I would definitely do it again.

Journey Sleepover and DayOn Monday, 27 February the Year 9s, their parents and the eight Journey teachers joined together in Anakalypsi to symbolise the beginning of the Journey course. The parents were informed about the importance of this course, at this special time in their child’s life. After the informative evening the parents went home and the Year 9s slept at school for some special bonding time with their classes and teachers.

An early 5.00am wake-up call got the students moving and boarding a bus that took everyone to the base of Mount Barker Summit. The girls walked up to top of the Summit from the Western side and the boys from the Eastern side. A special ceremony was held at the top while the sun was rising. The ceremony recognised the student’s lives so far and symbolised the departure of their journey into the future as young women and men.

Back at school, breakfast was shared and the remainder of the day allowed individual Journey classes to share personal stories and do activities which involved support and trust. After a BBQ lunch the boys and girls separately gathered to watch a movie to finish a very positive and uplifting day.

Year 8 Activities WeekTaking a Leap of FaithThe leap of faith on the Kangarilla High Ropes Course taught us there is a need for friends and teachers for support. Without that support, we could not have done it, but thankfully they were there and cared.

It's also a time to overcome your fears. If you don't jump, you will never conquer this fear and will have missed out on the best feeling! We all underestimate how much support we need through tough times. This is one of the many examples of how support and encouragement is needed in life. This time it was used to overcome the fear of falling!

Year 11 Reflections - On Monday, 27 February, the Year 11s participated in a drivers' education program here at school. We had a refresher of safety and road rules, saw alarming statistics on road casualties, and learnt important skills about how to be safer and better drivers. We spent some time in Atelier learning about the risks and consequences of being on the road. From there, we went into inbarendi where we learnt practical ways to maintain and manage a car by going around to different stations. These stations included: getting to have a look at a police car and equipment, how to change a tyre, how to check car oil levels, and even a real-life example of a car that had hit a tree.

This was an important day, as many in our year level begin to qualify for their P-plate licence, and it’s essential that we know how to be safe ourselves, whilst also keeping others safe on the roads. Many thanks to the experts who presented on the day, we really appreciate you taking your time to educate the next generation of road users.

Amy and Thomas

Year 10 Reflections - On Monday, 27 February, all of the Year 10 students shuffled into the Atelier Theatre where a police officer awaited them. Officer Lord, from the Holden Hill police station began the driver’s awareness workshop. The topics were targeted to our age group, these included: how to receive your Learners Permit and information about the course, Provisional 1 and Provisional 2 Permits. Following this, he explained the dangers of being a passenger in a car and provided us with examples of how to avoid these. For example, if a driver is speeding ask them politely to slow down. If this method doesn’t work then as a last resort say you need to go the toilet or threaten to throw something valuable out of the window, ie their phone.

We then watched two videos of the aftermath of a car accident and how it impacted on the lives of the victims in their everyday lives. Overall it was an educational presentation that we will look forward to hearing more about in the future.

Recent HappeningsMount Barker Show 2017Congratulations to all students participating in the Mt Barker Show High School Bake-Off. We had a huge response with six teams entering as well as ten Year 7 students entering the Individual Junior Cookery section.

Cornerstone was successful in winning first place in the ‘Schools Scone Bake-Off’. Erika Gardner entered her light and delicious Orange & Cranberry

Scones. The judges were very impressed with the layers of flavours as well as how light and fluffy the scones were.

The Year 7s bought home 2nd and 3rd place in their Rock Buns. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Year 10 Textiles - Denim BagYear 10 Textiles students were given the following brief:

“There is a growing world-wide movement working to encourage sustainable clothing and accessory choices. The idea is to highlight the positive impact individuals can make on the environment and their world, by choosing to recycle and re-image their old clothing and accessories rather than buying new stuff”. (News ABC, Sept 2015)

Denim is definitely back on the scene. Your challenge is to deconstruct a pair of jeans, develop some design ideas by investigating existing products for ideas, make or source a pattern and produce a predominately denim bag. (This could be for example a laptop bag, handbag or sports bag).

The photos below demonstrate what a fabulous job they did.

Naturi Focus WeekNaturi Focus Week had the delicious theme of The Great Naturi Bake-Off.

Students were invited to enter their own home-cooked bakery goods into a school-wide competition in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Some students entered individually, while some Home Groups spent time baking together, and then all the entries were sold at recess and lunch.

Naturi House were overwhelmed and heartened by the whole College community and their enthusiasm

towards this event.

49 entries arrived on the Friday morning and $1,547 was raised. A celebratory game of Touch Football was played at lunch time with the students claiming victory over the staff.

We are all very proud at how Cornerstone College’s students and staff worked together for such a worthy cause. Many thanks to all involved!

Recent Happenings

It was a great week of clear weather for the Year 11 Outdoor Education bushwalk, 29 May to 2 June. While the clear skies meant very cold nights, all students and staff had a fantastic week exploring the beautiful Grampians National Park. Following are comments from participating students.

Overall, I enjoyed the camp a lot. The Grampians bushwalk offered a valuable and rewarding experience. Over the course of the entire week the cameraderie and friendships built between students strengthened the memories and will remain for life. Josh

My favourite parts of the camp were the views from Briggs Bluff

and the Beehive Falls. I feel like I’ve made some really good friendships throughout the camp. Hamish

Year 11 TourismAs a part of their investigation into tourism in the local area, the Year 11 Tourism class went to Monarto Zoo on Thursday, 18 May. Whilst there, they went on a safari tour of the Zoo, checked out the gift shop and watched the chimps and meerkats.

The Zoo was a visual delight with students lucky enough to see a two week old giraffe, chimpanzee antics and rhinos up close.

The class participated and interacted actively with our guide, Peter, and investigated the sustainability of the Zoo thoroughly.

I was really proud of the way the students got involved on the excursion, their polite interactions with staff and the public as well as their general positive demeanour.

Science and Engineering ChallengeOn Wednesday, 14 June, Cornerstone College was represented by a team of 22 Year 9 and 10 students competing in the national Science and Engineering Challenge at UniSA, Mawson Lakes with around 200 students from eight different schools.

This event is presented by the University of Newcastle and is an opportunity for students to participate in a range of science and engineering activities. These included bridge building, constructing flat pack furniture and earthquake-proof towers, problem-solving electrical power grid distribution, decoding alpha-numeric communication strategies and building bionic hands and a space buggy fit for the bumpy Martian terrain.

The success and ingenuity of the solutions and models were assessed against different criteria and a points-based system that contributed to a combined school tally. A lot of fun was had by the students throughout the day and their efforts were rewarded on the score board – the Cornerstone College team won the competition and will go on to compete in the State Final in August.

Anzac Day Dawn ServiceOn Tuesday, 25 April, College Leader, Katherine Moularadellis and Aroona Student House Leader, Lachlan Traeger attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Soldier’s Memorial in Mount Barker.

The commemoration service began at 6.00am, which was led by the president of the Mount Barker RSL. Along with many other members of groups and organisations from the local community, our Cornerstone representatives were responsible for laying a wreath during the service, to pay respect to our war veterans.

Mrs Alysha Green Aroona House Leader

Student reflections from the day include:

The Science and Engineering Challenge was a great day because it was a chance to employ our creative and scientific knowledge. Through teamwork, we were able to contribute our individual skills that resulted in success - winning the competition! I had the opportunity to work alongside students from other South Australian schools and got to know other Cornerstone students better. Madison

It was a great day because everyone got the opportunity to try something new and do their best. James

We were able to work with a group of people and solve challenges that we wouldn’t get to experience otherwise. My group just wanted to have fun and together we were capable of working through the problems. Victoria

The Science faculty would like to express sincere appreciation to Southern Cross Cleaning for their sponsorship to cover the competition entry fee.

Mrs Kristyn Wheeler, Science Teacher, and Mr Stephen Partridge, Pre-Service Teacher

From the Archives - Winter 2011

Peer Support is a SACE subject that is embedded in our Christian Living program at Year 11. This year, 20 students have undertaken a training program and volunteered for this vital service role within the school.

By far the most anticipated event of the course, is attendance at the Year 8 camp. Year 11s attend the first day of camp to assist the Year 8s settling in.

They also get the chance to travel around the camp site working with a small team of Year 8s in their activity group. Peer Supporters love this opportunity to mingle with Year 8 students one-on-one providing a listening ear, an encouraging word or a pat on the back. They also get the chance to “relive their youth” – swinging on giant swings, hanging off flying foxes, crawling through mudpits and splashing in the pool.

Peer Support students spoke with great enthusiasm about all the wonderful experiences they had. Camp staff and the Year 8 students certainly appreciated the caring support offered by the Year 11s at camp. Everyone had a ball!

SACE Art ShowOn Friday 17 March, I had the pleasure, along with Ms Laetitia de Braconier Harders, to attend the opening of the SACE Art Show for 2017. Pieces exhibited are selected from the high achieving Visual Art students in the 2016 cohort.

Cornerstone College had three 2016 students whose work was selected to be exhibited. Leigh Stark, Olivia Cecil and Lauryn Bradley were all present with their families to see their art on display. It was inspiring to see the ways in which our young people developed and shared their thoughts and opinions in such varied and creative ways.

Our thanks must go to Ms de Braconier Harders and the Visual Art department for their quality program which encourages students to develop their skill in, and understanding of, Visual Art in a stimulating and supportive environment.

Old Scholar NewsLAUREN PFITZNER (2010)In the last few years I had felt a strong conviction to help others less fortunate than myself. I had begun some charity work and devoted time, effort and money to the cause but I needed to do more. I needed to experience it. My dad told me about a charity called Hands Across the Water that arose after the 2001 Boxing Day tsunami. This charity sought to house orphaned and impoverished children and guide them back into society. I was immediately touched and wanted to help.

A major fundraiser and awareness campaign that Hands Across the Water performs is an annual bike ride across Thailand. My dad and I decided to commit to raising $20 000 and to undertake the ride. It was tough work raising the money from events such as quiz nights, auctions, barbeques and even a 24 hour tennis coaching marathon but eventually we made it, raising $20,350.

On January 15 this year we began the journey along with nearly 30 other riders from around Australia.

We were to ride 820km from Bangkok to Khao Lak visiting the orphanages that Hands Across the Water supports. We rode through extreme humidity from coastlines to mountains, all the while supporting one another and seeing the smiles of orphaned children who have had more hardships in their short lives than I am likely to have in all of mine. Each day was hard but we knew that our difficulties were nothing compared to these children’s.

After 8 days we made it to Khao Lak, a coastal city that was devastated by the tsunami. The arrival was bittersweet for us all. We achieved our goal of raising money and riding up to 140km a day but at that moment it was evident that more could be done. We left feeling proud of our efforts, yet saddened.

Although helping this cause was a great honour, it taught me that life should be lived selflessly and to be thankful for how fortunate we are. We are called to help others; may we do that with joy.

Old Scholar NewsZAC EICHNER (2013)Since receiving his first guitar at the age of 3, Zac Eichner’s passion for music has only grown bigger. Zac is making his mark in the Australian music scene with his release of his debut EP Home.

Zac’s been playing his music across Australia since graduating from Cornerstone in 2013, where he was a student of Anthony Janus.

“I wouldn’t have developed as a musician without working with AJ, he helped me with musicality and gave me the confidence to embrace truth and vulnerability to create my art.”

And Home is exactly that: honest and vulnerable, it’s the story of the people Zac had met in his time away from South Australia - some harder to say goodbye to than others. But the lyrics’ subtelty and ambiguity allow the tracks to speak to you personally. It is as if Zac already knows your life story, and wrote it only for you to hear.

Making the experience as personal as possible, Zac has played each instrument himself (with the exception of his former teacher, AJ, on the sax). Zac’s command of music technology and his musical proficiency quickly make themselves known.

“All effects and production were done from scratch, meaning people could come close to recreating it but never quite be identical.”

Also a part of Home are two Cornerstone Old Scholars: Matt Cooper (2014), a recording artist and sound engineering genius; and Ebony Ackland (2013) who created the album’s artwork (right).

“Ebony’s a creative, so I tried to give her as much freedom as I could - even the work that didn’t make the final cut was incredible. I’d show her the lyrics, play her the song, talk to her about it and let her do her thing. We spoke openly and honestly about our artwork, and thankfully she’s kind and approachable so talking through some of the ‘difficult’ parts of the tracks was easy and comfortable.”

But it hasn’t been entirely easy arriving at this stage. To Zac, building his career in music has easily been the biggest challenge, but his hard work is already paying off. Zac has been performing at live music venues across Adelaide. This July, he took his live show to Tasmania.

“I’m currently still building my live show to make it more exciting as I’m a bit hidden behind they keys, guitar and microphone. I’d love to add some more movement so the audience can have a boogie with me.”

Follow Zac’s music and listen to Home through his Facebook page: Facebook.com/zaceichnermusic

Words by Lur Alghurabi

Zac’s EP Home is an honest reflection of his maturity as an individual and a musician, leaving no stone unturned emotionally in his lyrical content; raw, real and leaving something for us all to connect to.

The opening track introduces us to a beautifully atmospheric, floating melodic line, giving a sense of emotional calm and contentment - a stark contrast to the emotional outpouring that follows in the EP. Each track builds upon itself, transforming a 5 track EP into a continuous musical and emotional journey, whilst simultaneously giving each track its own individual character and texture.

Zac shows his depth of musical talent, with the incorporation of musical technology and production alongside his range of instrumental proficiency on piano, guitar and vocals.

To have known Zac since beginning at Cornerstone in Year 8 (2009) and now playing alongside him in live music venues across Adelaide, reflects the true pinnacle of a Music teacher. Over the past 9 years I’ve had the pleasure of seeing many of my students join the music industry as professionals. I’m incredibly proud of the commitment and perseverance Zac‘s shown, especially over the past few years towards his project, Home.

KIMBERLY CEPON (MARSHALL 2003) Kimberley is the driving force behind Shoe Boxes of Love, a charity that she set up to help the victims of the 2011 Queensland floods.

Deciding it was her responsibility to try and put the smile back on the faces of people caught up in the disaster, she started collecting shoe boxes filled with items such as toiletries, books, baby bibs and other emergency supplies.

Kimberley originally hoped to gather around 100 shoe boxes from friends and family, but in a few short weeks had collected over 10,000, filling three shipping containers, that were then transported to Queensland’s worst affected areas. Shoe Boxes of Love officially became a not-for-profit organisation and since that time Kimberley has run many appeals for disaster victims, floods, bushfires and cyclones, including Cyclone Debbie earlier this year.

JENNI BAILEY (2003)I graduated from Flinders University in 2008 with Honours in Marine Biology, where I studied the ‘Effects of boat activity on the behaviour of the Indo Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin in the Port River, South Australia’.

After completing my Honours, I set off to travel through Europe and visited around 30 countries. I moved to Mackay in 2011 and I’ve become the Environmental Ranger for Mackay Regional Council. It keeps me busy as I am the only Ranger for Council with an area of 7,622km² to cover (and no they don’t give me a helicopter).

I also work closely with Mackay & District Turtle Watch where I assist with the transport of sick and injured sea turtles to the Whitsunday Turtle Hospital in Airlie Beach (150km away).

In 2015, I was nominated for two Australia Day Awards acknowledging my continuous work with Coastcare programs, Mackay & District Turtle Watch, Seagrass Monitoring.

Recently I have started a property maintenance business with my fiance, and I have also become qualified as a Justice of the Peace.

Cornerstone gave me the grounding, encouragement and confidence that I needed to chase my dreams of becoming a Marine Biologist.

I love my work as an Environmental Ranger.Cornerstone assisted with the building blocks required for me to be a good speaker and a good writer and to have the confidence and driven passion to persist and not give up.

I am grateful and appreciative to all those who taught me over the years. I especially remember with great fondness my time spent Waterwatching with Tony Egan and other staff.
