cover story
At 62 years old, Jane Sey-mour believed that her days as a magazine cover girl
were behind her. That is, until she agreed to pose for this issue of Clos-er â while wearing an ultra-sexy bi-kini. But recently, as she boarded a flight from her home base in Los An-geles to attend an event in New York, the nerves began to set in, and she confided in her seatmate about her plans. âI told her I was doing this,â
says Jane with a girlish giggle. In return, she got an earful of ad-
vice on looking her best from the well-meaning stranger. âShe said to drink juices,â recalls Jane merri-ly. So in the week before the shoot, âI took everything out of the garden â kale, celery, apples, carrots, beetroot and ginger â and juiced for a couple of days,â she reveals. âBut I did cheat last night â I went to [Japanese res-taurant] Nobu for dinner!â

Jane says her kids donât see her as a hot mom: âThey think of me as an annoying mom who says things like, âHave you done your homework?ââ

ening. âThe floppy-arm thing is a dead giveaway so I use 5- to 8-pound weights. But I still canât get my luggage in the overhead compartment!â
But she does have a handle on her eating habits. âNo diets here,â she insists, noting that she hovers around 115 pounds. âI hate to deny myself things.â Favoring healthy items like sashimi and salad, Jane admits, âIf I have pasta, Iâll eat just half of it. My idea of a cheat would be guacamole and chips.â
One thing she wonât indulge in, however, is Botox. âI tried it and hated it,â Jane confesses. âIâd never do it again.â Itâs an atypi-cal stance in youth-obsessed Tin-seltown. âFor me it doesnât work because Iâm an actor and I need to be able to move every part of my face,â Jane explains. âI think Iâm being hired a lot because I havenât done all the stuff everyone else is doing.â Instead, she shares, âI always wear a hat when Iâm out in the sun. I drink a lot of water, and my skin is at its best when Iâve had sleep.â
No PAIN, No gAINA full night of zâs wasnât easy to come by last spring when her marriage fell apart. âJames and I were together for 22 years, and thereâs really not too much to say other than itâs really sad,â Jane sighs. âIâve accepted what is, and opened my heart to not hold grudges and to come from a loving space.â
The former couple remain a unit-ed front when it comes to their twin sons, Johnny and Kristopher, now 18. âWe speak three times a day,â says Jane. âWe are absolutely consistent in our parenting. Iâm moving forward and hoping that we will all learn from this.â
Part of that entails dipping a toe back into the dating world. âI have no idea what the new rules are,â she concedes. What about online courtships? âNo, no, no,â she laughs, insisting that sheâs sticking to traditional channels. âAt my age, there are other people who have been through similar things â sudden-ly they are single, and we have lunch

Jane wore her hairpiece from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman to recreate this updated look: âYou can never have enough hair laying around!â

Thirty-six years later, sheâs still got it! Jane had a blast recreating her pin-up look from 1977âs Sinbad
and the Eye of the Tiger, in which she played a princeâs sultry sister, who sinbad found irresistible. âI
couldnât imagine wearing that outfit again after this, unless I took up
belly dancing,â jokes Jane, adding that sheâs slimmer now than in the
black and white photo. âI was a ballet dancer and I was pretty fit.
But I was definitely a little rounder.â Jane still has fond memories of the movie. âThat was a great picture,â she says, admitting when she sees old photos, âI usually say, âoh, my gosh, look at that!â Itâs a fun trip
down memory lane.â
Sheâs been in the public eye for 40-plus years, but her closest pals are still having a hard time believing sheâs will-ing to bare her body considering sheâs had four kids. âMy friends are all laugh-ing hysterically about me doing this,â she admits.
But now itâs Jane whoâs having the last laugh. After a tumultuous 2013 â in April, she split from her husband of 20 years, producer James Keach â sheâs managed to emerge healthy, drop-dead gorgeous and reveling in be-ing a grandparent. âItâs just pure joy,â says Jane of this phase of her life. âI feel my most beautiful when Iâm hold-ing my grandchildren and with people I love.â
Of course, having a set of rock-hard abs canât be hurting her confidence. âGod, Iâm in better shape now in some ways than I was when I was doing the Bond film,â admits Jane, who starred in 1973âs Live and Let Die. âI donât do major fasts or work out crazily every day. I hope I can inspire people!â
How SHe DoeS ITTo maintain a figure that would put any 20-year-old to shame, the 5-foot-3 former dancer spends an hour three days a week doing a combination of spinning, light weights and Gyrotonics, a machine-based method that blends stretching and strengthening exercis-es. (She pays special attention to work-ing her core due to back problems.) She also plays tennis, golfs and swims, or if sheâs on the road, power-walks and does push-ups. âI just want to be as healthy as I can be for as long as I can,â she tells Closer, although she admits her arms could use some strength-

to drop a few pounds quickly, Jane suggests not eating after 6 p.m. and making smart choices: âi am not a fast food person!â but she will allow for an occasional glass of white wine â from her signature Js wine collection.

and then see if thereâs any reason to spend more time together.ââ
One lucky fellow whoâs passed that test is Barry Blumberg, a Web exec she met through a mutual friend. âItâs only been in the past few months,â Jane re-veals to Closer. âHeâs a good guy, intel-ligent and fun and we share a lot of the same interests.â But donât expect her to fast-track this new romance: âIâm not trying to get married.â
Besides, how would she find the time? The former Dr. Quinn, Med-icine Woman star has a dizzying ar-ray of projects in the works â jewelry design, movie production and paint-
ing â in addition to acting. âIâm look-ing forward to playing the roles I get now as an older woman,â says Jane. âThere are just so many more lay-ers to your personality at this point, youâve gone through so much more.â
Clearly, that realization is serving her well. âI canât believe the number, but you know, Iâm just grateful to be 62 and happy and have a great family,â she says. âThings change in life, but in a strange way, they get richer because you have more to compare it to. My twenties were great, but I appreciate everything much more now than I did then.â âReporting by Steve Gidlow
