WelcomeOn behalf of our Sponsors, Partners and Exhibitors, Welcome to Cloud Expo Europe2012 – The cloud event for business.
In an age of slimmed-down IT departments and budget-cutting, maintenance activities are stretching IT departments to the limit, and there is little time for development and new initiatives. With the cloud, businesses and IT professionals can pursue new opportunities and developments in super-quick time and cost-effectively.
Concerns about cost, security and reliability in the cloud are generally red herrings; they shouldn’t hold you back, as these concerns are equally comparable with on-premise IT strategies.
Cloud computing is very different to the traditional model, as it represents a shift towards a ‘rent not buy’ model. The traditional model, where most companies own their software, hardware and key on-site data centres and other specialised facilities, is a world away from cloud computing. In this new world, in stark contrast, employees and users don’t know where their computers, applications and databases are - they’re in the cloud! For the purest adopters of cloud computing, this is the whole point. However, this is not the model every business wants to pursue and Cloud Expo Europe covers all the bases. Whatever stage your cloud journey is, we hope you will come away from Cloud Expo Europe with interesting new ideas and new suppliers, and the knowledge and technology to incorporate into your own cloud strategy. The Cloud Expo Europe conference and exhibition cuts through the jargon, as the ‘how to’ event for all organisations, both large and small – for those seeking to deliver effective cloud strategies on time and on budget it is the perfect place to visit and for the Channel it is the place to network and make alliances.
We are delighted to be working in partnership with The Cloud Industry Forum, and the ClF Theatre will provide a cutting edge educational programme which will provide invaluable information and education to all visitors no matter what their interest in the Cloud.
We are honoured to play host to such a fantastic line-up of speakers and exhibitors, all here showcasing the latest and greatest cloud technologies. We extend a warm welcome to all our visitors, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors – we hope you have a valuable and thoroughly informative two days with us at Cloud Expo Europe 2012.
Kind regards,
Maggie Meer, Event Director

Driving the Cloud Agenda
Information technology has been the powerhouse of change and innovation for over 60 years, be it in solving complex problems, automation of tasks, creation of new business models, improvement in mass communication or the enhancement of collaboration across business and social groups.
Undoubtedly, the uber technology trends are those embracing cloud computing and mobile devices. The convergence of agile, scalable pay-as-you-use computing capability, with an increasing penetration of portable multimedia devices across the wider population is driving a sea change. Not just in the way IT is conceived, but the way it is provided and consumed. The notion of separate devices for work and personal use is also ending.
Cloud service adoption in the UK is growing healthily. In research conducted in December 2011 by the Cloud Industry Forum across 300 organisations, 53% had already adopted at least one cloud service. With a satisfaction level for the services provided at over 90%, the vast majority intend to expand their adoption of cloud services quickly.
That said, organisations have practical questions they want answered relating to data security and sovereignty; they want to be assured of service levels and the ability to exercise control over their IT. Those looking to extend their IT from an on-premise model to include a hosted or cloud services capability have many options open to them, and it is not always easy to be able to compare and contrast solutions. To that end, the consistent advice is to seek out best practice such as is set out in the Cloud Industry Forum Code of Practice and to compare and contrast vendors against that benchmark to provide the trust that is essential to any good partnership.
The arena of cloud computing tends to have three areas of focus for driving standards. These could be simply communicated as the technical areas of security and interoperability, and the commercial issue of building trust between end users and their service providers.
The Cloud Industry Forum (www.cloudindustryforum.
org), a not-for-profi t organisation, recognises the challenge facing both credible service providers looking to stand out in a crowd and for end users looking to make an informed choice with so much ‘noise’ in the market. Against a backdrop of many market new entrants, and the lack of any formal standards, CIF developed an independent Code of Practice for Cloud Service Providers. It requires them to review their business practices and operational capabilities and to present information in a standard form that in turn, enables end users to make a rational and informed decision.
Service providers are required to certify their organisations in three areas: transparency (information regarding the structure, legal names, portfolio, location and executives); capability (the procedures, practices and resources operated), and, accountability (the binding commitment of the executive/s of the cloud service provider to the code of practice). Once certifi ed, service providers can use the CIF certifi ed logo to validate their achievement on their websites, helping end users recognise their commitment to the code of practice.
Look out for the CIF Theatre Conference Programme for everything you need to know about evaluating, assessing and contracting with confi dence in the Cloud. Find out how the Code of Practice helps you to understand and manage supplier relations and discover why your peers are relying on this initiative to drive transparency and accountability in cloud service delivery.
Meet us on Stand 295 at the show.

An Ideal Home for Cloud Computing
For over 100 years the Ideal Home Show has been wowing homemakers with the latest gadgets and must-haves for comfortable living in beautiful surroundings. But families are not the only ones that need a dwelling in which to nurture and grow – so does cloud computing. Sam Johnston, Director, Cloud & IT Services at Equinix explains why fi nding the ideal home should be an aspiration for both consumers and providers of cloud services, and why there’s another ‘ideal home show’ in town.
Cloud computing has seen more than fi ve years of growing interest as a fl edgling industry, but its exponential growth is set to continue in 2012 as it becomes mainstream. Many cloud computing companies are still at a proof-of-concept stage; others are using Cloud at a ‘shadow IT’ level, even if their main systems have not adopted the technology yet. However a growing number of cloud deployments are moving to operational status and, as they expand, are looking for new platforms and scalable homes to host their services. We think the ideal home for the cloud is Platform Equinix™ – which is a combination of our global network of state-of-the-art IBX® (International Business Exchange™) data centres, and the ecosystems of networks, partners and customers only a cross-connect away within them.
The European cloud market is ripe for growth and London and its environs are touted as one of the prime hubs for cloud computing
investment. This makes Cloud Expo Europe 2012 a natural choice for companies like Equinix to exhibit and engage with other ecosystem participants. Equinix is known for its expansive ecosystems of Networks, Financial Services fi rms, Content and Digital Media organisations, Enterprises, and Cloud & IT Service providers. This ecosystem approach, supported by Platform Equinix and conveniently accessible through Equinix Marketplace, is what forms the perfect home for cloud, where all the elements of a top-quality cloud service are in one place.
Equinix sees 2012 as a pivotal year for cloud computing as the industry approaches a critical mass of participants. Metcalfe’s law broadly states that the more participants inhabiting a particular ecosystem (or network), the greater the value of that ecosystem to all members. A quick look around Cloud Expo Europe 2012 gives a taste of the future, and the communities developing across the 99 data centres in 38 markets that comprise Platform Equinix. Equinix customers are looking for a secure and reliable platform that will take them to wherever their users are, grow as they do and deliver access to a thriving ecosystem of best-of-breed providers.
A good example of the advantages Platform Equinix delivers can be seen in our work with an existing customer that moved to set up a European hub, choosing to build on its positive experiences of working with Equinix in the US. Among the many challenges of starting a

An Ideal Home for Cloud Computing
new venture on a new continent, establishing a new relationship with an infrastructure provider wasn’t one they had to face. The relationships were already made; the capacity and reliability of the product fully understood. Equinix continued to meet and exceed their expectations.
At Cloud Expo 2012, Equinix will be explaining its services via a rolling program of speakers and video at Stand 331. Equinix provides services for hundreds of enterprise consumers and cloud providers, including all of the ten largest industry players. Throughout the show a selection of cloud service providers will be taking time to outline their own experience of Platform Equinix and how it can benefi t both enterprises and other providers.
Equinix is hosting a Panel Session from 13:50 – 14:50 on the fi rst day of the Expo in Keynote Theatre 1 to get under the covers of cloud computing. In the abstract, cloud computing is the delivery of information technology as a service rather than a product. Yet concrete issues like reliability, security and performance continue to be paramount for customers. The panel will take a look under the covers of the cloud, examining the issues that are of interest to public cloud providers and users of private and hybrid clouds. The ability to expand globally is a big draw for cloud companies who are hungry to put into practice solutions that have spent years on the drawing board - safe in the knowledge their solutions can be deployed worldwide. Connectivity and
security will also be covered, as will access to Equinix Marketplace.
For CIO’s, CTO’s and other IT specialists attending this Expo our message is simple - Visit our stand and our panel so we can share the experiences and knowledge of the many customers, vendors and participants that can be found in Platform Equinix: a one-stop-shop for cloud infrastructure. Every provider on Platform Equinix has access to over 4000 premium customers, and for customers, hundreds of providers are accessible.
To fi nd out more, Equinix will be at Stand 331 with a selection of service providers, such as 6Fusion, Joyent, Redstor and Service-Now, on hand to answer any questions you might have or to discuss your cloud strategy or desire for business transformation to cloud.
Come along to Stand 331 at 16:00 each day to chat to the team over a beer, and see what makes us the ideal Home of the Cloud – and take the opportunity to win an iPad 2!
