BASICS to Aid the Literacy Community: Youth, Adult and ESL

In “To Parents and Teachers,” from Noah Webster’s Blue Back Speller for Reading dated 1783, he indicated learning to read can be a simple process. Individuals “learn basic consonant and vowel sounds by looking at a letter and pronouncing its sound along with a clue word that begins with the sound. The clue words are not sight words – they simply give [individuals] something to ‘hold onto’ as they think of the shape of the letter and its sound.”

WHERE TO BEGIN

Warm-up Daily with keywords for each letter of the alphabet using short vowel sounds to learn the beginning sound of words. [Recommended material: Pages 11 and 12 of Code of Reading Edition 3, which have keywords for beginning sounds of the alphabet.]

1. Say beginning sound of word. [solved by daily warm-up above]2. Touch vowels. [dominant sound of every syllable] Tester observes only.3. READ word in 3 seconds or less. [enhanced solution by CLOVER+]

TEACHER’S TEST FOR STUDENT

EDUCATION’S SILVER BULLET

STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY

This is a Simpler, Fairer, and Faster way to organize the mind.

Used with phonics the brain is organized to apply spelling rules to read and to spell proficiently.

Use of a multi-sensory approach guarantees success. First, practice the sounds of the alphabet using short vowel sounds for the vowels.

Tap each sound as it is said aloud. Practice daily for phonemic accuracy. It will keep the mouth and ear tuned a la musicians.

Then use CLOVER+ to recognize patterns in words. Mark each vowel, determine the type of syllable to identify the vowel sound, then tap each syllable as it is pronounced. Important: Watch and listen to your student!

Refer to PRACTICE BOARD of 200 most used sight words with unaltered spelling on page 12 of Code of Reading Edition 3 at www.codeofreading.com. Find also daily Spelling WORKSHEET on page 11 with keywords for beginning sounds of alphabet. See Case History of Alexei, currently a college senior. Also see page 17 for Bibliographical Notes and Sources.
