Prior to May 15 you must register all livestock that was not weighed-in in 4hOnline 2.0. If you do not register by May 15 you will not be eligible to show that animal at the State or County fair. This is a state deadline and it is NOT negotiable. If you have questions or need help with this please call the Extension Office. FFA are done through a paper form. Static Exhibit Checkout When: Sunday, June 27th Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m. Exhibits may be checked out (picked up) between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 27th. Those who check out exhibits early will forfeit premium money.

Exhibit Write-Ups 4-H’ers, don’t forget to create a write-up on your fair exhibits! This write-up shouldn’t be long, but easy to read as the judge only has a few minutes to review the write-up. The write-up should include the following:

Pinterest Pinterest is a popular source for getting project ideas. However, you need to make sure when sourcing you are getting down to where it originated from. Be sure to cite the correct site when documenting where your information/idea came from. If you have a hard time finding the original source, contact the Extension Office!

Display Boards/Posters If you plan to use a display to illustrate what you learned, remember size guidelines refer to ALL project areas. Posters can’t be larger than 24”x36” and display boards can’t exceed 48”x48” (flat). Boxes can’t exceed 28”x22” in height or width and 12” in depth.

2021 Howard County Spring Fair Communications & Clothing Event Howard County 4-H held their 2021 Spring Fair Communications & Clothing event on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at NICC Cresco Center and the Cresco Community Chapel. Over 75 educational presentations, working exhibits, clothing selections, clothing challenges, and share-the-fun acts were presented by Howard County youth for judging. Cookie Challenge – Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened • ¾ cup sugar • ¾ cup brown sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 large eggs • 3 cups quick-cooking oats • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions: • In a large bowl cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine the oats, flour,

dry pudding mix, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. • Drop by level tablespoons 2 in. apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 375 O for 10-12 minutes or until lightly

browned. Remove to wire racks.

Rabbit and Cavy Workshop in Muscatine When: 12:30-4 p.m. Where: Muscatine Agricultural Learning Center Who: Rabbit and Cavy Project Members 4-H members are invited to a Rabbit and Cavy Workshop on Saturday, May 2 from 12:30-4 p.m. at the Muscatine Agricultural Learning Center in Muscatine. There is no preregistration and no cost to attend. Adults and youth are required to wear masks and socially distance. Youth are encouraged to bring their rabbits and cavies. May 3 County Council Applications Due

Who: 2021-2022 High School 4-H Members Attention 2021-2022 high schoolers! Now is your chance to be on the 4-H County Council! This is an awesome opportunity to be the ambassadors and leaders of Howard County 4-H. You will get the opportunity to participate in exclusive trips and be a role model to younger 4-H’ers and Clover Kids!

May 6 Pick-Up Market Broilers When: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Where: Howard County Extension Office Save the date those who ordered Market Broilers! Cresco Saddle Club Clean-Up

Where: Cresco Saddle Club Arena When: 6 p.m. Who: Horse Project Participants Bring your gloves, buckets, shovels, muscles, and great attitudes to get the Cresco Saddle Club Arena cleaned up. The saddle club graciously lets us utilize the arena, so it is only right that we help with spring clean-up. Many hands make light work!

May 10 Dairy Heifer Workshop When: 6-8 p.m. Where: Reicks View Ag Education Center Who: Open to ANYONE planning to show dairy at the Howard County Fair The first hour will be on How to Select a Dairy Animal for Fair. Presentors will be Jennifer Huhe and Mariah Schmitt. After the first hour, those not in the dairy heifer project will be dismissed. Those in the dairy heifer project will stay for another hour until 8 p.m. to complete their work in the project that evening. Those that are attending this workshop that are 14 years and younger MUST be accompanied by a parent. The first hour is learning. Second hour of this workshop is dedicated to those in the dairy heifer project for selection of their animals. If you cannot attend, call 547-3001.

May 12 Horse Project Workouts Begin Where: Cresco Saddle Club Arena When: 6-8 p.m. Who: Horse Project Participants Plan to arrive by 5:30 to have your horses warmed up and ready to go. Be ready and in your saddles at 6:00 p.m.

May 13 County Council Interviews Who: 2021-2022 High School 4-H Members that applied to be on the 2021-2022 County Council Equine Lunch & Learn Webinar “Environmental Management of Horse Facilities,” with Kapil Arora, field agricultural engineer with ISU Extension and Outreach. Topics they will cover but are not limited to are vaccines, medicine and administration of medications, and biosecurity practices. We will have a hands on activity at the end to practice what you have learned on vaccinations.

Sheep and meat goats that were weighed-in must be entered in 4hOnline by May 15 at 11:59 p.m. or they will not be eligible for fair. Once the information is entered I will go online to verify it. BUT, it is your responsibility to enter that information.

May 15 Container Garden Workshop

When: 9:00 a.m. Where: Kessel Park Who: 4th–12th Graders Cost: $25 Learn all about how to successfully grow vegetables in containers. It's harder than it looks! We will show you how to grow more vegetables in less space than you ever

thought possible. We will even create our own container garden to take home! Registration form is attached.

May 15 YQCA Deadline

All 4-H livestock exhibitors will be required to be YQCA certified for county and State Fair exhibition for the following: Beef, Dairy Cattle/Dairy Goat, Meat Goat, Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep, and Swine. The great thing about YQCA is that it can be done anywhere (with internet), anytime, and you don’t have to complete the whole training in one sitting. To get started with the training, check out the YQCA Help Sheet. Once you have completed the training, please send the Extension Office a copy of your certificate so we know that you are certified. Once we receive your certificate we will reimburse you the $12 for the cost of the training. Please put your name and address on your YQCA certificate prior to dropping it off at the Extension Office.

May 27 On Their Own & Ok Workshop Where: VFW When: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Who: 4th-8th Graders Cost: $10.00 This one day workshop helps to build skills, maturity, and confidence to safely stay home alone. Topics discussed with youth attendees include: ideas for rules to have in place when home alone, preparing easy snacks and meals, setting a basic schedule to follow when home alone, types of emergencies and what to do, ideas for managing squabbles between siblings, and boredom activities and ideas. This workshop does not certify that your child is ready to be home alone, you must make that decision as a family. Youth will go home with a family workbook to guide parents/guardians through discussing rules and expectations together. Registration form is attached.

May 28 @ 4:00 p.m. Livestock Fair Entry Forms Due Where: Howard County Extension Office Who: All Livestock Participants Livestock: Leaders will receive paper livestock entry forms and will hand them out. In order to show at the fair, you MUST have turning in your livestock entry form. Please bring the exact change for your stall fees when you bring your entry forms. If you have a registered animal, the Extension Office needs a COPY of your registration paper, so bring that as well. Please contact your leader, the Extension Office, or refer to the fairbook if you have any questions. Static: Entries for static projects will be done online (no paper copies). There must be an entry for every static project that you bring to the fair and each should have a description so that we can identify the projects. Refer to the help sheet if you have any questions about entering your static projects on Blue Ribbon Fair Online. Please contact your leader, Extension Office, or refer to the fairbook if you have any questions. July 7-8 STEAM Camp – Theme: Coding Join us this summer in our partnership with NICC in Cresco for our STEAM Camp featuring the theme of coding for 2021! Meet Daisy the dino - your friendly, neighborhood dinosaur - ready to do tricks at the behest of young campers programming algorithms. July 19 & 21 The Science of BBQ Day Camp

When: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Where: Ridgeway Ball Diamond (Gisleson Park) Who: 4th-8th Graders Cost: $25 This program will introduce participants to grilling methods, including cooking with gas and charcoal. Youth will explore various meat cuts and how cooking temperatures and the composition of the meat can affect the barbecuing process. Participants will learn how to incorporate meat into a healthy diet, food safety and techniques such as using rubs, marinades and seasonings. Registration form attached.

July 27, 28 & 29 Clover Explorer Camp

When: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Where: July 27: Kessel Park | July 28: Elma Park | July 29: Riceville Park Who: K-3rd Graders Cost: $25 Join me on a learning adventure! We will be doing various learning activities including, STEM activities, Healthy Living activities, and even some Arts! On this adventure, we will dabble with robotics & coding, create our very own healthy lunch & snacks, partake in team-building activities, and maybe even a water balloon fight! August 3-4 Intermediate Trip

Join us for 2 days of fun for the 2021 4-H Intermediate Summer Outdoor Adventure Trip. This year the youth will not be staying overnight, we will still partake in two days of camp. The adventure starts at the Yellow River State Forest in beautiful Northeast Iowa. We will partake in a fishing adventure, search for treasure while geocaching, and participants will BBQ their own lunch. Then, the next day, we will travel to the Mississippi River to climb aboard the Mississippi Boat Tour and more! This fun and educational experience is open to all 4-H members currently in 7th and 8th grades. Registration form attached.

These forms need to be turned in to the Extension Office ASAP. Without these your members are not eligible for the fair.
