Aiming to make historyBy Jennifer LangDespite a stampede of Conservative
hopefuls chomping at the bit for their party’s nomination, local Liberals insist a Tory lock on the new federal riding of Cloverdale-Langley City isn’t a certainty.
And now that the brand-new Liberal electoral district association is in place and the fi rst executive board has been elected, the party is “hitting the ground running” in Clo-verdale-Langley City, presi-dent Matthew Boulton told the Reporter.
Th e next step is to begin the nominee selection process for a candidate who will carry the Liberal banner in the next federal election in 2015.
“We want to get somebody in as quick as we can, so we can start promoting them,” Boulton said. “We don’t want a long, drawn out aff air.”
Someone is already interested – Lang-ley resident John Aldag is seeking the nomination. Aldag is organization chair of the new electoral district association board. He worked for Parks Canada for
31 years and is currently on unpaid politi-cal activity leave.
Th e Liberals plan to make their pres-ence known in the new riding this week-end, when they’ll participate in Saturday’s
Cloverdale Rodeo Parade.Boulton conceded the fed-
eral Liberal party has “strong uphill battles in pretty much all of our Fraser Valley con-stituencies.”
He cautioned the associa-tion is still in its infancy. “It’s a brand-new riding. It’s go-ing to be an exciting time for all parties.”
Boulton said he believes the Liberal party’s tradition of developing policy from the grassroots – and the mes-sage being spread by party leader Justin Trudeau – will
appeal to voters in both communities.“We align what Cloverdale and Langley
City is looking for,” he said. “I think our chances are very good. I don’t think any of us would be here if we didn’t believe in change.”
Murder in CloverdalePolice are looking for a
stolen SUV in connection with Surrey’s latest homi-cide late Monday evening.
RCMP responded to a report of a man being shot at a home in Rodeo 176 Street and 57 Avenue just before midnight.
A man was found in-jured in the townhome and was taken to hospital
where he died from his in-juries. Police said Tuesday they believe the shooting may have resulted from a domestic dispute. Th e In-tegrated Homicide Inves-tigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investiga-tion.
Th e suspect is described as a white man between 20 and 30 years old.
Police are looking for a 2010 blue Kia Borrego with the licence plate 023 WDE.
IHIT is asking anyone who has information re-garding this homicide to call the IHIT Tipline at 1-877-551-4448 or by email at [email protected].

FILE PHOTOEquine drill teams like this one are always a crowd favourite at the annual Cloverdale Rodeo Parade.
Horses and a lot moreBy Jennifer LangA team of prized draft horses
– the champion Express Clydes-dales – are the star attraction at this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo Pa-rade on Saturday morning.
Prized for their beauty and size, the team of six black and white heavy horses are making a rare trip to Canada for the 68th Cloverdale Rodeo and 126th Country Fair.
Th ey’re one of the featured acts at all fi ve rodeo performances, plus they’ll be on view outside the Stetson Bowl, starting with Friday’s Cloverdale Chili Cook Off , followed by the May 17 pa-rade. Admirers can also get a closer look and have their photo taken with these gentle giants at the Rodeo fairgrounds.
Horses, big and small, are an important part of the parade. Th e Shetland ponies from Ferndale, WA, will be back, providing a contrast with their heavy horse counterparts.
“Th e unsung heroes are the Shriners,” points out Paul Ora-zietti of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, one of the parade sponsors. Between their mini bikes, go-karts, clowns and affi liated groups such as Job’s
Daughters, the Shriners are easily the largest contingent in the Clo-verdale Rodeo Parade. “Th ey’re just an incredible group.”
An estimated 90 per cent of parade entrants return year aft er year. Like the 10,000-plus specta-tors that line the streets, parade participants are drawn to the sense of community.
“Th ere’s a long tradition [in Cloverdale] of doing things for the community,” he said. “It’s like Th anksgiving Day, where you give thanks and come out to the community and show pride.”
Other entrants to look for this year include Ms. Vancouver, the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friend-ship Centre Association, Surrey Fire Fighters, and Langley’s Bit-A-Bling drill team.
Th ere’s also a smattering of pipe and marching bands, two competing garbage fi rms, vin-
tage and classic cars, the Surrey Re-Enactors, the Laos Benevo-lent Association, the B.C. Renais-sance Festival, and more.
“It’s a mixed bag,” said Ora-zietti, adding more than 1,100 participants and 100 entrants are expected.
Th e parade runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Th e route starts at 177B Street and Hwy 10, heading west to 176 Street, where it turns north to 58A Avenue. From there, the route jogs east to 176A Street and continues north to 60 Avenue. Th en it’s east to 177B Street, and south to 58 Avenue.
Enjoy live entertainment be-fore the parade, and swing by one of the charity pancake breakfasts, including the Cloverdale Lions, at 5748 176 Street, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Cloverdale Legion, which also hosts a barbecue, the Canadian Reformed Church of Cloverdale from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and the Cloverdale United Church from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

To the editor;
Re: “Th e greatest threat to the B.C. envi-ronment in our lifetime,” May 8.
I found David Black’s opinion editorial on the eventual destruction of the North Pacifi c most interesting and timely, considering the feder-al Conservative government’s commitment on making a de-cision on the Northern Gate-way Pipeline in June of this year.
Th e idea of building a refi n-ery in Prince Rupert has already been pro-posed by B.C. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver. At the same time the Honorable MLA knows this is still a tragic conse-quence, and does nothing to answer the real problem of global warming and envi-ronmental destruction.
Opting for the lesser of two evils, Dr. Weaver is hoping the powers that be see that the enormity of the investment in-volved and the public disdain for pipelin-ing and tankering bitumen will deter them
from increasing oil sands production alto-gether.
Personally, and with all due respect, I think the answer lies in Fort McMurray itself. Why not build the refi nery right there? Th en the bitumen never leaves the
tar sands. Th is would also in-crease the safety of our rivers and pristine wilderness.
Fort McMurray could then become the distribution and recycling return center. Th ey could then build pipelines for distributing refi ned product,
far safer and many times more lucrative. Th e money you save not building pipelines for bitumen and the cost of not having to tanker oil back and forth across the ocean could be used towards refi nery construc-tion, which would be around $7 billion dollars.

FILE PHOTOLord Tweedsmuir’s trophy-winning girls soccer team zooms down 176A Street at last year’s bed races en route to victory.
It’s off to the racesTeam spirit, speed on display at the 37th annual bed challenge
By Jennifer LangIt just might be one of the zaniest – yet awe-in-
spiring – displays of speed, agility and power ever devised – and it’s a time-honoured tradition in Clo-verdale.
Tonight marks the 37th annual Cloverdale Bed Races, where teams race beds on wheels in the his-toric town centre – all for bragging rights and a one-of-a-kind trophy.
Th e coveted Bed Pan Trophy, for instance, is shaped like a stainless steel hospital bed pan.
Turkey’s Party Makers will be back to defend their title – last year marked the fourth bed pan in a row for the seemingly unbeatable team, which enjoys a good-natured rivalry with Th e Vault Restaurant.
Th e races are traditionally split into four divisions: men, women, media and hospitality. Th ere are also prizes for best dressed – not as easy as it sounds. Previous winners have included the Surrey Museum (which have dressed as a band of pirates, complete with pirate ship, and astronauts toting a silvery rock-et ship) and the City of Surrey, who last year wowed the crowd with sheer colour and team spirit.
New this year will be a mixed division with men and women. Teams in that category will be compet-ing for the all-new Centre of the Universe trophy, named in recognition of the late Bill Reid, one of Cloverdale’s – and Surrey’s – biggest boosters and former executive director of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, which co-sponsors many community events with the Cloverdale BIA.
“It’s an homage to Bill,” says Paul Orazietti of the Cloverdale BIA, who worked closely with Reid, a long-time friend and former tourism minister.
Teams consist of six pushers – each running a stripped-down bed frame on wheels in heats along 176A Street between 57A and 58 Avenue. Th e chal-lenge attracts everyone from sports teams, church groups and restaurant staff to civil servants and edu-cators to see who’s fastest.
Teams use one of their own beds, or use a loaner. A “next generation bed” built by Lord Tweedsmuir
will be unveiled at tonight’s races, getting underway at 6:15 p.m., aft er the colourful children’s decorated bike parade, and a demonstration beginning at 5:45 p.m. (weather permitting) by competitors from the World Round-Up Freestyle Skateboard Competi-tion, running May 16-19 at the Cloverdale Rodeo, inside the Cloverdale Curling Club.
Tykes on bikesChildren can win one of three new bikes at the
Kids Decorated Bike Parade, held just before the annual Cloverdale Bed Races.
Participants enter three age categories: 5 and un-der, ages 6 to 10 and 11 and up.
Winners are selected by random draw. Th ere’s also a special prize for the most creative entry. Rider costumes are encouraged.
Th e bike parade starts at 6 p.m. at 176A Street and 57A Avenue, next to Cloverdale Pharmasave. Th e parade is presented by the Cloverdale BIA and the Cloverdale chamber of Commerce, along with sponsors. For more information, email [email protected], visit www.cloverdale.bc.ca, or phone 604-574-9802.

Tricycle races test skillAft er the races, head on over to the Cloverdale

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 has a busy May long weekend planned, starting with the annual Tricycle Race.
Practice runs start at 5 p.m., with registration at 6 p.m. Races begin at 7 p.m.
Th ree people per team, with prizes for the top three teams. Th ere’s no entry fee. Th e Cloverdale Legion is located at 17567 57 Avenue.
Th e branch is hosting pancake breakfasts throughout Rodeo weekend, and are planning raf-fl es, 50/50 draws and a prize raffl e for BBQs.

Small businesses are fundamental to job creation and job growth in our province.
From mom and pop restaurants to small automotive repair shops to upcycled clothing designers – small businesses are major contributors to our economies and to the character of our communities.
In fact, small businesses account for 98 per cent of all businesses in British Columbia.
A small business is defi ned as one that employs less than 50 people but most businesses employ far fewer – an estimated 82 per cent of small businesses employ less than fi ve people.
Our government recently consulted with small businesses across the province to make it easier for small business to compete for — and win — government contracts.
Throughout the consultation process, small businesses highlighted the need to increase awareness of opportunities to sell to government, improve information and resources, and cut red tape while increasing small business participation.
Small businesses are integral to the downtown core and spirit of Cloverdale. In advance of the up-coming Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair, for example,
many of our local businesses are participating in the festive spirit. In 2012, British Columbia had more small businesses per capita than any
other province in Canada. I am confi dent the trend of successful small businesses will continue, and
I’m pleased our government is creating long-term growth opportunities for small business.

We are very excited to share our newest member of the Cloverdale and District Chamber of Commerce team. Natasha Taylor is our new Offi ce Manager. We are transitioning away from having an Executive Director and Natasha will be in the offi ce Monday to Thursday from 10-2 pm. Your elected board of directors will all be sharing the out of offi ce duties, formerly performed by the Executive Director, as many hands are needed to best represent our members. We are actively advocating for improvements to the Old Safeway site and the
Cloverdale Fairgrounds as these two City owned (both directly owned and through their wholly owned development corporation) parcels are an eyesore for all of us. We as a community must speak up and not allow the neglect to occur any longer on these sites. Without all of our voices we will see many more years of nothing happening on these critical pieces in our community. Enough is enough and we are not going to tolerate non action and years of talk, without any improvements.
Please join us for a very special luncheon on May 15th @ the Stetson Bowl, which will be followed by a special naming ceremony to honour the memory of our dear friend Bill Reid.

Teens go outside the box in chili contest
By Jennifer LangIf Hayley Jones and
Jeremy Berttall of Surrey’s L.A. Mathe-son Secondary were breaking a sweat as they worked over a steam-ing pot of chili, it didn’t show. Th e pair, clad in cowboy hats, smiled confi dently as they stirred and added last-minute ingredients.
Th e team was one of 20 from Surrey, Langley and Vancouver compet-ing at this year’s chili cook-off May 8, hosted by Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary at the Clo-verdale Fairgrounds.
Jones said their reci-pe for Bison Chili drew on Metis and German culinary traditions.
“Lots are going outside the box,” said John Buist, an instruc-tor and chef at Lord Tweedsmuir, remark-ing on the scope of this year’s entries.
Th e annual event pits teams of high school students making chili from scratch in single pots on one-burner camp stoves set up on folding tables.
Th e teams have three hours to serve up the perfect bowl of chili, off ered to a panel of judges.
Presentation counts, so costumes and decorating themes are a must.
Th e gold medal for most original/creative recipe went to Lord Tweedsmuir’s Maddie
Ferris, who donned a blue bathrobe and slip-pers to woo judges. Her “Early Risers Chili” had coff ee in the recipe.
Laurae McNally, Surrey school trustee and veteran cook-off panelist was preparing herself to try them all,
recalling a number of creative recipes she’d sampled over the years.
Th is year, Lord Tweedsmuir principal Allan Buggie ensured each judge had milk to wash the chili down with, and a bottle of antacids on standby.
JENNIFER LANG PHOTOPresentation counts, which is why teams encorporate recipe themes into all aspects of competition. Above, Dannielle Robertson and Kendra Johnson of A.J. Matheson Secondary serve up a colourful Pride Chili.
JENNIFER LANG PHOTOChef Thompson Tran gives pointers to one of the teams entered in this year’s high school chili cook-off, hosted by Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.
New executive evenly split between centresFrom page one
Th e top three positions on the electoral district association execu-tive are fi lled by people from Clo-verdale, but otherwise the board is split between those who hail from the historic Surrey town centre and Langley residents.
Boulton and vice president John Nuraney, a former MLA for Burna-by-Willingdon (2001-2008), live in Cloverdale, as does treasurer Simon Cumming.
Five declared Conservative can-didates are vying for their party’s nomination in the newly-consti-
tuted riding of Cloverdale-Langley City: Paul Brar, former Liberal MLA Dave Hayer, former Surrey MP Gurmant Grewal, Mike Garisto and Dean Drysdale, who is the lone Langley resident.
Th e new riding takes in commu-nities that have historically belonged to separate electoral districts, but have traditionally sent Conserva-tive MPs to Ottawa, including South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale MP Russ Heibert, who is not seeking a fi ft h term in 2015, leaving the new South Surrey and Cloverdale-Lang-ley City electoral districts without incumbents.

Henry Gerber was serenaded by the sounds of his Eastern European homeland on April 27, when friends threw him a surprise birthday party at Elena’s Country Kitchen in Cloverdale.
Th e early morning celebration, which started at about 7 a.m., featured cake, and live music.
Now retired, Gerber worked as an entomologist for the B.C. Department of Agriculture for nearly 40 years.
Like Gaby and Elena Nasarimba, the restaurant hosts, Gerber is originally from Romania, “A part of the world where borders change, depending on who wins or loses the war,” he told the Reporter.
When his parents were born, before the First World War (1914-1918), his home was part of
Austria, he said. Aft er the war, it became Romania, and aft er the Second Word War (1939-1945), the area belonged to Ukraine.
Gerber, born in 1934, grew up in Germany, where he lived from 1939 to ‘51, when he moved to Canada.
He lived in Chilliwack, completed high school and then attended two years of college in Alberta.
He then went south to Washington State to earn his B.A and M.A. in biology from Walla Walla College.
