2017 Fun Night Hosted by the Bangor and Oroville-Foothill 4-H Clubs

Theme: "Wide World of Sports with 4-H"

When: Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 4:00-8:30 pm

Where: Silver Dollar Fair, Commercial Building in Chico

Cost: We ask for a $2.00 donation at the door. The cost of dinner, game booths, and

silent auction items vary.

Dinner: Plan to stay for dinner! The food is always excellent and fairly priced.

What we need from our 4-H Families:

1.) Please attend the event! This is a fun, affordable, and family-oriented night

out. Please come, have a great time, and support our Program.

2.) Please bring quality silent auction items. We need items which people will

want to bid on. Please ask businesses for donations, gift certificates, or actual

items which can be displayed on the auction table. No live animals or

firearms as silent auction donations!

3.) Please bring a cake for the All Star Cake Walk! The All Star Cake Walk is our

most popular booth at the event and will need LOTS of cakes and desserts to

be won!

4.) Each club needs to provide at least 4 older youth/adults to assist with various

jobs throughout the night. Please sign up to help out! We need individuals to

sell game tokens, take money at the entrance, sell dinners, and assist with other

small jobs. Please contact Marjorie Daley to sign up for a spot to volunteer.

Items can be dropped off during the same hours that the commercial building at the

Upcoming Events

2017 CSU Chico Sheep Day The 2017 Sheep Day will take place on February 11, 2017. This event is put on by the Chico State College of Agriculture

and is an educational opportunity for youth to learn more about sheep. There is a $5.00 per person charge for this event,

and is approved by the Butte County 4-H Council to count towards a youth’s three events for the Fair Requirement.

However, this is not a 4-H Event. It does not count as a 4-H Event Attended in a youth’s Record Book!

2017 Butte County 4-H Fashion Revue The Butte County Fashion Revue/Quilt Revue will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Butte College ARTS Building.

Check in will begin at 9:00 am. The Fashion Show is at 1:00 pm in the Theater. The theme this year is “The Road to

Fashion”.

The Categories offered that will allow county winners to qualify for the State Fashion Revue are: Traditional, Consumer

Science Purchased-$40.00 Limit, Upcycled, Stripe/Print/Plaid Challenge, and Knit Challenge. For more information on

individual categories and the changes, please visit the State Fashion Revue website at http://4h.ucanr.edu/4-

H_Events/SFD/SFR/.

Categories offered this year at ONLY our county level (winners will NOT qualify for the State Fashion Revue) are: Quilt

and Quilt Other (including bags, pillows, placemats, etc.).

Entries are DUE into the 4-H office by Friday, March 3, 2017. There will be NO LATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED! Entry

forms can be found at http://cebutte.ucanr.edu/4-H_Program/Events/Fashion_Revue/.

Facilities Reminder

Please remember that all requests for facility use of school, city, county, state & private facilities must be sent to the

4-H Office to be filled out by the 4-H staff. Please include details of location, time, dates and purpose.

Remember, forms and contracts of any kind can only be signed by the County Director!

Fundraiser Pre-Approval Reminder Please remember that all fundraisers must get pre-approval from the 4-H Office before the fundraising can start. Please fill

out Form 8.7 – Fundraising Approval from the 4-H Treasurer’s Manual or get the form from the Butte County 4-H website,

http://cebutte.ucanr.edu/4-H_Program/Forms/, and turn it into the 4-H Office for approval at least 2 weeks prior to your

fundraising activity. All fundraisers must be pre-approved!

February 2017 4-H Council Meeting The next Council Meeting will be on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the HR Training room, Suite G; (next door to the 4-

H office in Oroville), at 7:00 pm. This is where all the decisions about your 4-H program are made and put into action.

Your 4-H Club should have one adult 4-H leader and one youth 4-H member there to be your representatives at our

Council Meetings. If you do not attend, others will be making decisions for you. Every member, Jr. leader, and adult leader

is invited. Come and let your voice be heard! This is a very important meeting as we would like all our clubs to start on the

same page!

Free Livestock Seminars

Two free seminars will take place in Oroville at D&J Feed (1930 Pearl St.) on February 7 and 8, 2017 from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Both Seminars will be presented by Nutrena representative, Frank Ward. The February 7, 2017 Seminar will be on

chickens and rabbits. The February 8, 2017 Seminar will be on beef, swine, sheep and goats and will focus on getting your

facilities ready, animal health (including nutrition and management), handling, grooming, and showmanship. Both of the

seminars will include pizza and drinks.

Please contact D&J Feed at 533-7447, to receive more information, and to submit a head count of your project

members that are interested in attending these seminars.

Record Book Training for Adult Volunteers and Parents This training is an opportunity for Adult Volunteers and Parents to learn about Record Books and how to help your youth

with their book. We will discuss the difference between a basic Record Book which would count toward the Fair

Requirement, and a Record Book which would go to the County Record Book Competition. We will also go over what

counts where in the Personal Development Report and how to tabulate Star Rankings.

When: Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Time: 6:30 pm-7:30 pm

Where: HR Training Room, Butte County 4-H Office

Butte County Farm Bureau Newsletter Submissions Requirements:

1. Name, photo and brief two to three sentence bio of the students who wrote and submitted the article.

2. 300-500 word article in Microsoft Word submitted electronically to [email protected].

3. All photos must be submitted separately in an original file format such as .jpeg, .jpg. Please do not copy and paste

the photos into a Word document.

Guidelines:

The purpose of the FFA Chapter and 4-H Club update section is to give the chapters and clubs an opportunity to promote

upcoming events and activities like fundraisers, fairs, contests, do a wrap up/follow up to events and activities or high light

a student who won an award, competition, etc. These aren’t the only things you can write about by any means, just

suggestions to give ideas. If a photo involving the subject of the article is available please feel free to submit that as well

as the author’s photo. We love photos!

Structure the article like a press release with the important who, what, when, why and where in the first paragraph, then

divulge in the body. A good place to find examples of this style writing is the CSU, Chico College of Agriculture

newsflash page http://www.csuchico.edu/ag/news/index.shtml.

Butte County 4-H All-Star Application for 2017-2018 It’s that time of year again! We are on the hunt for individuals who want to become Butte County 4-H All-Stars!

Applications, four references, and up-to-date Record Books are due to the 4-H Office by Monday, April 3, 2017 by 5:00

Butte County 4-H Scholarships Application The Butte County 4-H Council is offering scholarships for active 4-Hers which are graduating seniors. Go to the Butte

Cavy (Guinea Pig) Project A brand new Cavy project is starting in the Butte County 4-H program. If you are interested in raising, showing or just

having a guinea pig as a pet, this project is for you. The Butte County Fair will have a Cavy division for show if there are

Leadership Conferences

2017 State Leadership Conference: UC Davis We are already gearing up for the 2017 State Leadership Conference! This year the conference will be held at UC Davis.

Due to lots of fundraising, nearly all the youth who attended the conference in 2016 had their entire way paid with no out-

of-pocket fees! We’re already starting fundraising for the 2017 conference. Are you interested in attending this year?

2017 California Focus Registration for the 2017 California Focus opened in January and closes on April 3, 2017. This event is a unique

citizenship educational experience for youth ages 14-19. California Focus takes youth to the California Capitol in

Sacramento for an up close view of state governments and civic experience! For more information, visit

Camp News

2017 Camp Information Medieval Times are coming your way! We are inviting all of the young Lords and Ladies to this year’s Medieval themed

4-H Camp from June 25-29, 2017! Don’t forget to stop by our booth at Fun Night! Again this year, we have a sponsor for

a free pass to our fun Butte County 4-H Summer Camp. All you have to do to enter is stop by our summer camp booth and

ask one of our teen camp counselors “What's camp all about?” and you'll get a ticket for the drawing held at the end of the

night. We will also have the paperwork available for campers and any parents that want to be a part of our great camp.

4-H Camp 2017 Camp T-shirt Contest With the start of the New Year, Camp will be here before you know it and now is the time to start thinking about a design

for our Camp T-shirt Contest. The winner of the T-shirt contest will receive a full Scholarship to Camp Rockin’ U. The

shirt must contain the camp theme “Medieval Times”, “4-H Camp Rockin’ U 2017”, and of course, the 4-H Clover. All 4-

H members are encouraged to design a logo that will be used on our Camp T-shirts. The design must be simple enough to

be applied as a silk screen application, on plain paper, not lined paper, and in COLOR with dark ink print and outline. All

entries are due into the 4-H office by Monday, April 17, 2017 by 5:00 pm. Only one entry per 4-H member!

2017 Camp Rockin’ U Teen Camp Counselors The monthly meetings for Teen Counselors will be the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Meetings will be held either at the

Durham Butte County Library (2545 Durham-Dayton Hwy, Durham) or the HR Room next to the 4-H Office in Oroville.

Club News

Oroville Foothill 4-H has had a busy and exciting year so far! The club has participated in both the Veteran’s Day Parade

and the Christmas Light Parade in downtown Oroville. Their horse club even won an award at the light parade! They had a

successful canned food drive, a coat drive, rang bells for the Salvation Army, and had great food at our thanksgiving

potluck. At the December meeting we had a gift exchange and discussed upcoming events like Fun Night and Presentation

Hello Cloverleaf readers and all 4-H members! Lone Pine 4-H is gearing up for 3 very fun event! The first event is Lone

Pine’s Snow Day! Lots of different clubs participate, and there is hot cocoa and chili for treats! Everyone always has a

good time playing in the snow and sledding! The second event that is coming up is Fashion Revue! Fashion Revue is

always fun because you can get your hair and makeup done, walk down a runway, and talk to judges. Fashion Revue is at

Butte College again in the ARTS Building. The third event is Fun Night! Fun Night will be at the Silver Dollar

Fairgrounds, and each 4-H club will have a booth that you can enjoy. There will also be a bounce house, food, and the

Happy New Year to everyone! Durham Parkview West 4-H finished the year with their annual Christmas Meeting where

they invited community members and honored them for their volunteerism. The club sang three Christmas carols to them,

and presented each of them with a plate of cookies brought by 4-H members and a planted bulb by the gardening group.

They continued their meeting with games led by the activities Chair people, a gift exchange and ended with cookies and

cider. Also, over 40 books were collected to be donated to the literacy box project in Butte County.-Submitted by Madison

Happy New Year Everyone from Chico 4-H! They had a great end to 2016 with a lot of community service opportunities

such as Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Canned Food Drive, Rosedale Adopt-A-family, Gift Wrapping for the Fire

Department, and the Sock Project for the Homeless. It felt good to give back to our community. They are looking forward

to an awesome 2017 with many events coming up, like Fun Night, Presentation Day, and their annual Drive Thru Dinner.

► MARKET GOAT, HOG & LAMB entries- As of 3pm on January 10th none of the market animal entries exceeded entry limits. Market hog, lamb and goat entries will be open until limits are reached or until March 27, 2017

► MARKET ANIMAL PHOT REQUIREMENTS- Photo of exhibitors with market goat, hog or lamb are due by March 27. If photos are not submitted by March 27 entries will be disqualified. Emailed photos must be received by 12:00 noon, Fri. March 24, 2016. If you email photo(s), confirmation will be sent that photo(s) were accepted. If you do not receive confirmation, contact the Fair Office prior to deadline.

► MARKET ANIMAL WEIGHT LIMITS – Please note that top weight limits have been re-established. Overweight & underweight animals will be disqualified and will not be allowed to show in market classes & sell in the Jr. Livestock Auction. • Steers – 1000-1450 lbs. • Lambs – 100-160 lbs. • Hogs – 210-290 lbs. • Goats – 60-115 lbs.

► REPLACEMENT ANIMALS (BACK-UP) must be of the same specie as the exhibitor’s primary entry and will be allowed as approved by Fair Management only if:

o 120/60/30 day ownership information is submitted prior to entry closing deadlines (photos, breeder information, bills of sale & scrapie information for lambs & goats).

o Animal is not another exhibitor’s primary animal o If an exhibitor has more than one market animal, they must designate a “primary” and a “back-up”

RABBIT MEAT PEN entries will be accepted beginning 8:00 a.m. Monday Feb. 1. If at 3 pm on the

5th business day after entry opening there are more than 40 meat pens (limit) the Fair will institute a lottery to draw for the 40 spots. After the first 40 have been drawn, a second lottery will be instituted to draw for waitlist order. Please see website for complete lottery rule. Weight limit: 3 rabbits/pen, each weighing between 3 ½ lbs. - 5 ½ lbs., & not more than 10 weeks of age.

2017 Butte County Fair Livestock Dates, Deadlines and Important Changes

Changes for 2017 Livestock

1.) Bred and Owned classes for all species are eliminated.

2.) NEW! Market turkey show, the show will be limited to the first 10 entries.

3.) There will be a one year suspension from exhibiting any animal for removing breeding animals early from the

Fairgrounds before the release time. The release time for all breeding is Sunday at 7pm.

4.) Poultry showmanship will be separated by 4-H and FFA. The market show will remain combined.

5.) Open breeding cattle divisions will now be British, Continental and Unregistered.
