Inrecentyearstheseconstraintshaveledtotheevolutionofalternativeconcreteslate-appearanceproducts,whichutiliseinterlockingtiledesign,resultinginconsiderablylessslateperm2ofroof.Whilsttheseproductsoffermajorcostsavingsininstallation,theydonotprovidetheaestheticand‘planningfriendly’benefitsofnaturalmaterials.

Inresponse,Sandtofthasturnedtoclay;anincrediblyversatilenaturalmaterialthatcanbepressedintopreciseshapesandthenfiredinapermanentslatecolour.ThishasenabledSandtofttocreateacompletelynaturalproductthathastheinstallationcostsofconcretelargeformat,thinleadingedge,interlockingtiles,thankstoitssizeandflexibleopengaugedesign.

Whencomparedtoslate-appearanceproductssuchasconcretethinleadingedgetiles,Cassiusnotonlymatchesthecostofinstallation,italsocostsnomoreinmaterialterms.InotherwordsCassiusoffersanaturalroofatthesamepriceasconcretethinleadingedgeslatealternatives.

Naturalmaterialsaregrowinginpopularitybuttheirbenefitsusuallycomeataprice.Atraditionalnaturalmateriallikequarriedslate,isalabourintensiveandspecialisedproductthatmustbeinstalleddoublelappedtoperformcorrectly.Thismeanshighlabourandmaterialcostsandlongercompletiontimes.

Firstly,thelargeformatsizegivesacoveringcapacitywhichissimilartothelargestconcretetiles.Secondly,theopengaugeensuresthattheCassiusisfastandefficienttoinstall,removingallthecomplicationspreviouslyassociatedwithinterlockingclaytilesanddramaticallyreducingcosts.

InAntiqueSlatecolour,Cassiusoffersaslateappearanceintheformofaclaytile.Oncefiredinthisslatecolour,theflatprofileandthinleadingedgecombinetogivethisclaytileanauthenticslateappearance.Asaninterlockingclaytile,Cassiusofferssimilaraestheticsandweatheringpropertiestonaturalslatebecauseitisalsoanaturalmaterial.However,unlikeslate,claycanbepressedintocomplexdesignsduringthemanufacturingprocess,andthusofferssignificantmaterialandlaboursavings.

ThelargeformatinterlockingdesignoftheCassiusprovidesbigsavingsovertraditionaldoublelapslate.

Sosignificantarethesavingsthat,atapprox.10tilesperm2,Cassiusaffordsthesameeconomicbenefitsasconcretelargeformat,thinleadingedge,interlockingtiles.Forthefirsttimenaturalmaterialscanbespecifiedatthesamepriceasconcrete.

CassiusismanufacturedfromnaturalclaytakenfromthealluvialplainoftheHumberestuary.Sandtoft’sabundantreservesofrawclayareexcavatedimmediatelyadjacenttothemanufacturingprocessrequiringminimaltransportation.Theclaypitsareperiodicallyrestoredaswetlandhabitats,twoofwhicharenowregisteredasSitesofSpecialScientificInterest(SSI).
