Anotheryearhasflashedbyandthecricketseasonisalreadyuponus.AsIwrite,winterandsummerarejostlingforposition–withspringhavingbarelygotalookin–butwehavealreadyplayedtheopening2ndXIleaguematchoftheseason(picturedonthefrontcover).
Asalwaysatthistimeofyear,thereisarealsenseofanticipationintheair.Afteradisappointing2017,the1stXIareraringtogo,strengthenedbyseveralnewplayers,including–forthefirsttimein3years–anoverseasplayer/coach,MitchMcMullan,fromAustralia.Theseniorsquadhasmorestrengthindepththanforquiteawhile,withahighproportionofourownformerjuniors,andwehopethatthiswillbereflectedinallthreeofourSaturdayXIs.WiththenewI’Ansonleaguestructureresultinginacascadeofrelegations,therewillbefeweasygames,butwearesureallourteamswillrisetothechallenge.
Forthejuniorsection,too,therewillbesometoughquestionsaskedthisseason.BothourtwoseniorsquadsareplayingintheSurreyJuniorInvitationalLeagueagainstthetopclubsinthecountyatU15andU13level,whilstothersquadshavejoinedthenewhighertierWestSurreyAcademyLeague.Moreover,asaresultofarestructuringofthejuniorleagues,thereisasubstantialincreaseinthenumberoffixturesthisyearforallsquads.However,withastrongteamofyoungprofessionalcoachesnowonourbooksaswellasnumerousparentcoachesandvolunteerhelpers,weareaswellplacedtocopeasanyclub.
Thereareafewotherchangesthisyearwhichsomeofyouwillalreadyhavenoticed,includingtheintroductionofanewonlinecommunication,availabilityandselectionsystem,designedanddevelopedovermanymonthsbyourMembershipSecretary(andex-Chairman)GrahamWebb.Thoseofyouwhohavealreadymadeuseofthesystemwillappreciatewhatafantasticfacilityitis–itpromisestomakelifefareasierforadministrators,playersandparentsalike.

Blackheathwillagainbefielding3teamsintheI’AnsonLeaguethisseason:the1stXIinDivision1,the2ndXIinDivision3andthe3rdXIinDivision6.FoundedinGrayshott,HampshireinJanuary1901,theleaguedrawsitsmemberclubsfromSurrey,HampshireandSussex.Itisbelievedtobetheoldestcontinuously-operatingvillagecricketleagueinEngland.Manyofitsmembershavefinevillagegrounds–allarewithin45minutesdriveofBlackheath.LeaguematchesareonSaturdayafternoonsbetweenAprilandSeptember.Thisseasonhalfthematcheswillbedeclarationgames,theotherhalflimitedoverfixtures.Fullinformationabouttheleaguemaybefoundontheleaguewebsiteathttp://ia.play-cricket.com.WintertrainingfortheseniorteamstakesplaceatCranleighSchoolonSundaymorningsbetweenJanuaryandearlyApril.Duringthesummer,theseniorstrainonWednesdayeveningsatBlackheathfrom6-8pm.

AsidefromleaguecricketonSaturdays,BlackheathfieldsatleastoneandoccasionallytwoteamsonSundaysduringtheseason.Dependingontheopposition,someofourSundayfixturesmaybedesignatedasdevelopmentgames,givingtheopportunityforsomeofourolderjuniorstohaveatasteofadultcricket.ThestandardofoppositiononSundaysvariesconsiderably,fromrelaxedandentertainingmatchesagainstfriendlylocalrivals,tohighlycompetitivefixturesagainstverystrongwanderingsides.ThismeansthatonSundaysweareabletoaccommodatecricketersofalmostanystandard;wetakeprideinthefactthateveryoneiswelcomeatBlackheath.

BOYS’CRICKETOnceagainthisyear,wewillberunningboys’leagueteamsatalllevelsbetweenU8andU13,withacombinedU15/U14squad.AllsquadsfromU8supwardswillberunningtwoteamstoensurethateveryonegetstheopportunitytoplayinmatchesoftheappropriatestandard.In2018ourtwoseniorsquads(U15/U14sandU13s)arebothplayingintheSurreyJuniorInvitationalLeague,againstthestrongestclubsinthecountyattheseagegroups;bothsquadsarealsofieldingteamsintheWestSurreyYouthCricketLeaguestructure.TheU12-U9squadseachhaveAandBteamsinappropriatetiersoftheWestSurreyYouthCricketLeague,whichthisyearhasintroducedanewtoptier(theAcademyLeague).OurU8swillbefieldingtwoteams(LionsandTigers)intheWestSurreyYouthCricketDevelopmentLeague,whichistheonlyleagueavailablefortheiragegroup.ThereisnoleaguefortheU7s,howeverwegenerallyorganiseatleastacoupleoffriendlygamesforthesquadagainstotherlocalsides.
