Quite a number of RCB’ers are already making

plans for the BMWMOA National Rally in Billings, MT (July 23-26). As the event gets closer we can figure out departure dates and

routes. Some people are planning on a two-week extended vacation and others need to be

up and back in a week or less. Regardless of how we get there or how long we can stay, the days up in Billing should be a blast! Maybe one

of us will even win a new bike at the raffle up there. SPEAKING OF RAFFLES… I am always open to

suggestions for raffle prizes. I try to keep up with new items as they are released and re-viewed in various moto-mags. If there is an

item that you have wanted to try (but were too cheap to buy!) then maybe you could win it at a raffle. Just let me know what it is and where

to find it and I will give you your chance. QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass. It’s about learning to ride in the rain.”

Ride safely – rain or shine,

Gordy RCBPREZ

We are officially in the prime riding season. In

the next few months, members can look for-ward to Morro Bay, the Lois Lewis Memorial Poker Run, the 49’er Rally, and the Spring Clas-

sic at Trinity Lake. In addition to those returning favorites, we

have added the following inaugural events this year: the RCB “Ride and Shoot” at Beale AFB in late April; the “Rope Swing Extravaganza” at

Mike Ledbetter’s house and pond in Newcastle in late June, and the “Surprise Valley Surprise” in late August.

The “Ride and Shoot” event deserves some special mention due a recent press item. An article (reposted on the RCB Forum) reported

that the FBI had recently admitted adding eve-ryone who has received a motorcycle license to its “potential gang member” watch list. Sadly,

the report turned out to be a hoax from a satir-ical news outlet. I was really hoping it was true since the RCB will soon be holding a weapons-

related event. I was confident that our street cred with other outlaw motorcycle clubs would be significantly enhanced. Had the report been

true, once the Bureau got wind of the “Ride and Shoot” event our members would have

been moved from the “potential gang member” category (where they would have shared space with Honda 250 and Vespa riders) to their

rightful position as “bada** bikers” (along with all the other 1%-ers!). Despite the debunking of the story, I will still be buying chaps, finger-

less gloves, beanie helmets, and various fringed items for upcoming raffles so our mem-bers’ appearances will be more consistent with

the Bureau’s expectations when/if some clever G-man decides listing all riders as potential thugs is a good idea after all!

2015 RIDE REPORT FROM THE SEA GULL INN B & B By Greg Peart

The first RCB road tour of the year in March and no rain, wow. March

13, 14 and 15, 2015 were this year’s dates for the 8th annual Whale of a Tour in Mendocino at the Sea Gull Inn owned by Jim and Ayla Douglas in Mendocino. The majority of the group met at the new Ep-

pies location in West Sacramento on Lake Rd. and West Capitol Ave. Those riding were Greg Peart, Ray Trujillo and his longtime compan-ion Nancy Compton, Tony and Judy Spadaro and Shawn and Cindy

Klien. Cyndee Peart drove over so did Lisa and Bruce Cornelius. Chuck Tally arrived at the Sea Gull Inn later in the day driving his

wife Marilyn and also bring Marilyn’s sister, Becky and husband Dale with them. The trip over was perfect with no wind, slightly cool and every wild-

flower in the book at full bloom. Hwy. 128 never fails to deliver the best curves the state has to offer with spring time blooming of red bud everywhere to be seen. Lunch was at everybody’s favorite Dry Creek Store. With an early arrival

time at the Inn this year the partying began much sooner than as in years past. Dinner our first night was the ever popular 955 Ukiah. To our surprise it had been remodeled inside sporting a new bar area and a more romantic seating area on the main floor. We were seated up stairs all at one very nice ta-

ble for a great dinner. The after dinner tradition of an Irish coffee at the majestic Mendocino Hotel was enjoyed by all this year. Saturday morning arrived to soon but with the usual fabulous B & B breakfast Jim and Ayla prepare

and served by Jim right to your room. Everyone found their own thing to do strolling around town and snacking on food goodies. It was a lovely easy going, cool day with light puffy clouds. A perfect day to just relax and everyone seemed to need it. Our cocktail party that afternoon started at around 5 PM.

Jim and Ayla joined us and we had enough cages to drive everyone to one of my favorites for dinner, The Little River Inn, located just a few minutes south of Mendocino at Van Damme State Beach Park.

The food is always great here and fair priced. But make sure you have a reservation for weekend din-ing or you will be unhappy and eating someplace else. Daylight saving time would give us all an extra hour of sleep this night. What a weekend!

After a wonderful Sunday morning breakfast it was time to say goodbye to the cool dry Mendocino coast line. Without any holdups we departed right on time 10:15 AM. Jim Douglas took the opportunity to ride his bike with us to Willits where we took our first break. With Jim saying goodbye we continued our trek on Hwy. 20 around Clear Lake. Weather was near perfect with

the highs in the 70’s. Lunch at Granzella’s in Williams at around 1:30 PM seemed

impossible it was so packed so we tried a new spot. A small Mexican food place

close by fit the bill very nicely as everyone seemed to have a good meal. In

some cases a very large meal and food was pre-

pared fast. We had another very nice tour this year. It is always a real pleasure to

see Jim and Ayla and they always take such good care of us with food, rooms,

reservation help and any-thing else we seem to need. Thank you so much

Jim and Ayla. If you want go with us next year mark your calendars for March

11, 12 and 13, 2016.

Birmingham, Alabama native George Barber modified, raced and maintained Porsches in the

1960's (63 first-place wins). He started collecting and restoring classic sports cars in 1989, but his interest soon turned to motorcycles. Barber recognized that there was not a museum which reflected the history of motorcycles from a global perspective. He wanted to preserve motorcy-

cle history in the United States in a way that represents an international aspect and to supply an example of motorcycles that until then could only have been seen in books and magazines.

This was the theme used in the mission and development of the Barber collection. The collection grew with the assistance of skilled restorers that worked for Barber at a secluded location in Birmingham that once housed a commercial vehicle refurbishing facility. Out of the

same shop a vintage motorcycle race team operated with the challenge of maintaining and rac-ing historically significant machinery. These bikes were routinely campaigned around the United States and Europe so that they could be enjoyed and appreciated in their original setting, ra-

ther than collecting dust in a garage. This racing effort brought the Barber Team 7 National Championships in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) and helped secure a credible place for the collection in the community of motorcycle enthusiasts.

In 1994, the Barber collection became the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum when it was granted a 501(c)3 not for profit status. On March 14, 1995, the museum was officially opened to the public in the original secluded location on Birmingham's Southside. The museum operat-

ed here until November 1, 2002. The Museum reopened at its new location at the Barber Mo-torsports Park on September 19, 2003. Along the way vehicles from the museum’s collection have been featured in exhibits around the world. Twenty one motorcycles were selected for the

famed Art of the Motorcycle exhibit at the Guggenheim’s New York and Bilbao, Spain location as well as the Field Museum in Chicago. England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed has featured

cars from the Barber collection. Birmingham’s own Museum of Art has conducted a special exhibit featuring motorcycles from the Barber collection.

The collection now has over 1200 vintage and modern motor-cycles and as well as a substantial collection of Lotus and other

racecars. It is considered the largest collection of its type in North American and possibly the world. There are approximate-ly 600 of the collection’s 1200 motorcycles on display at any

given time. These bikes range from 1902 to current-year pro-duction. Bikes from 20 countries represent 200 different manu-facturers. The common street bike is represented, as well as

rare, one-off Gran Prix race machinery. Bikes have been pur-chased from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, and Swe-den, but also as close as down the street.

THE BARBER VINTAGE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE By Bob Lawrence

Some of you will see these pages and say, oh yea that was an awesome day… some will say I’ve always wanted to go there, and others hopefully will see the few pages shown here and think. Road trip! Each motorcycle displayed has a story, many have personnel connections from our pasts and some are still in our garage… All the bikes in the museum are road ready and appar-

ently can be ridden after a short checkup, how cool is that. So a little background about how this adventure transpired for me.

Wes Fleming the BTS (Between the Spokes) BMWBMW newsletter editor ran a story by one of the

club members telling about there amazing experience at the vintage museum. Well needless to say

after reading the story I was the one who thought, Road Trip! And

as luck would have it I needed to attend two weeks of training in Cookeville Tennessee giving me a

free weekend, so with Leeds Alabama within striking distance I left Cookeville early Saturday to make the 10am opening of the museum. $15 entry and $15

for the guided tour into the bowels of the ground floor storage and refurbishing areas, actually $27 total with your AAA discount. As mentioned each

bike has a nice history narrative with it, reading them all is virtually impossible in a day as there are 6 floors to peruse. I found it easier to photograph

the bike and the information page for reading later. As you go through the museum and find each bike that you have history with the youthful memories

will flood back like the smell of wonder bread. The experience is soon expanded by texting your old riding buddies the photo of there old bike in new

condition on display! (Back to the hardware) The Captain America chopper was one of three built

for the movie Easy Rider. In addition to 600 motor-cycles on display, 1200 total. Barber has the largest Lotus collection along with other formula one race

cars. So make sure you put this one on the bucket list when you make your next nationwide moto tour, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
