GUEST SPEAKER – Jeffrey Tan

“Ignite your passion - cooking for charity”

We were privileged to have such an inspirational speaker give us their time to share a passion for Rotary and cooking, and the amazing result they have achieved along the way. Jeffrey Tan is no ordinary person. Not only is he a highly credentialed Rotarian, he is a highly sought after Culinary adviser and Chef De Cuisine, as well as a very successful business owner and motivational speaker. Jeffrey’s Rotary resume is impressive having started as an Interactor in Malaysia, then progressing through Rotaract and then into Rotary. He was President of the RC of Manningham in 2004-05. He has also served the District as an Assistant Governor, and Chair of Community and Vocational Service. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow. On the business side, he is founder and chairman of International Premier Foods Pty Ltd. He is an Executive Chef Member of Les Toques Blanches, and has cooked for HRH the Crown Prince and Princess of Malaysia. He has also been one of the driving forces behind the RC of Manningham and Alzheimer Australia’s hugely successful fundraising dinner “A Night to Remember”.

Page 4: Club of Doncaster · Nola Dawes Nancy Tanner, and Evelyne McLeod ... Jeffrey’s Rotary resume is impressive having started as an Interactor in Malaysia, then progressing through

His culinary creation has been described in many food magazines as a 'blend of new and not so new traditional cooking techniques, fresh ingredients and simplicity in its creation and presentation." Jeffrey is a recipient of the Australian Centenary Medal and holds two Australian Day Awards. We heard that Jeffrey started his Cooking for Charity initiative some nine years ago, and has raised an incredible A$1.5 Million so far for various charities here and overseas, including the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust. We were privy to pictures of some mouth-watering dishes served at these dinners. In fact Jeffrey has one of the most engaging Facebook pages with food images galore and updated daily. The Cooking for Charity concept is pretty straight forward; a charity is

identified, a host venue is sorted, a dinner party list is organised, people commit to pay to attend, some people volunteer to assist, fine food is prepared, and everyone has a great evening. The size of the dinner is usually restricted to 12 people and a small number assist with preparation and cleaning up. The cost for is a minimum $200 per person, with around $150 going toward the charity. The menu is agreed prior to ensure the experience is outstanding! Wine is BYO.

His diary is booked until early 2015, although our good connections with Jeffrey could see a gap found earlier. We

came close to organising a dinner a number of years ago, and anyone interest in helping host and organising a dinner should let PP Russell know. Jeffrey shared that the next RC of Manningham and Alzheimer Australia’s black tie fundraising dinner “A Night to Remember” will be held 17 May. Tickets are limited and they will sell out. Watch FB and watch this space. We will long remember the definition of passion that Jeffrey not only shared using his unique style, but as exuded throughout his presentation and during the meet and greet discussions after the meeting. He walks the talk with passion and pride. Jeffrey Tan: an ordinary person doing extraordinary things. #Rotary in action.

HEALTH MATTERS with Esther

STROKE Strokes are a medical emergency and prompt treatment is essential because the sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen

A stroke is a condition in which the brain cells suddenly die because of a lack of oxygen.

A stroke can be caused by an obstruction in the blood flow, or the rupture of an artery that feeds the brain. The main symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the word FAST:

Face-Arms-Speech-Time.

Face – the face may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile or their mouth or eye may have dropped

Arms – the person may not be able to lift one or both arms and keep them lifted, because of arm weakness or numbness

Speech – the speech may be slurred or garbled, or may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake

Time – it is time to dial 000 immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms

Other symptoms can include:

Page 5: Club of Doncaster · Nola Dawes Nancy Tanner, and Evelyne McLeod ... Jeffrey’s Rotary resume is impressive having started as an Interactor in Malaysia, then progressing through

Sudden confusion, or trouble talking or understanding speech Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination Sudden severe headache with no known cause

There are 2 types of stroke: Ischemic stroke accounts for about 87% of all strokes and occurs when a blood clot, or thrombus, forms that blocks blood flow to part of the brain.

If a blood clot forms somewhere in the body and breaks off to become free-floating, it is called an embolus. This wandering clot may be carried through the bloodstream to the brain where it can cause ischemic stroke.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel on the brain's surface ruptures and fills the space between the brain and skull with blood (subarachnoid hemorrhage) or when a defective artery in the brain bursts and fills the surrounding tissue with blood (cerebral hemorrhage).

Both types of stroke result in a lack of blood flow to the brain and a buildup of blood that puts too much pressure on the brain.

Some of the Risk factors for stroke include the following:

Age - as you get older your risk increases. A family history of stroke. High blood pressure. High cholesterol. Smoking cigarettes. Diabetes. Obesity and overweight.

In Australia nearly 400,000 people per year have a stroke, it is very serious.

Important: Doctors recommend regular health checks with your GP including Blood Pressure checks and monitoring of your bloods, more often if you are over 60 years. As always be guided by your GP.

ROTARY YOUTH SERVICES REPORT – Paul Kounnas

Selwyn Shahine, Liz Olie, Barry Halpern, Pat Armstrong with Neville, Kevin O’Donnell and I attended The Rotary Youth Services Program presentation evening hosted by the Rotary club of Templestowe at Cassavini.

Also attending were members of the Templestowe Rotary club, District Governor Merv and Kay as well as a number of parents and school Principals and vice Principals. It was truly an inspiring evening to hear so many young people share with us some of the life changing experiences they had by attending the various youth programs which were made possible for them by Rotary. All our young presenters spoke extremely well and related their personal experiences after attending one of the youth programs. They spoke about what they learned and how they excelled, gained confidence and some for example have gone on to become school captains, while others have gone on to do other programs. They all spoke about going through an enormous learning curve and learning about giving and helping others. Many spoke about how they have gained a better understanding of themselves and others, different cultures etc. They all felt enormously indebted to Rotary for the life changing opportunity they’d been given. They talked about life lessons that will be

with them for life.

Page 6: Club of Doncaster · Nola Dawes Nancy Tanner, and Evelyne McLeod ... Jeffrey’s Rotary resume is impressive having started as an Interactor in Malaysia, then progressing through

Clare Hunt who was sponsored by our club to attend The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) two years ago spoke about how the program was a life changing experience for her. Clare is currently studying Medical Engineering. Jade Chan, past President of the Doncaster high School Interact club also gave a great presentation on the establishment and success of the Interact club. Jade under her leadership and stewardship from Selwyn, had grown to 57 members. What a great achievement. She also spoke about how they raised $500 for a local project and $2,000 for an International project. This is another great success story for our club, thanks to the persistent effort and commitment from Selwyn Shahine. In fact Selwyn received praise from many participants and organizer Carol Lawton, for the part he played in making these life changing experiences for so many of these young people possible. Past President, Paul Kounnas
