Thy spirit first to life awokeIn eighteen hundred and thirty fiveBeneath the sway of Marsh and BoakeThenceforth did Lanka’s learning thrive

Refrain: School where our fathers learnt the way before usLearnt of books and learnt of men, through thee we’ll do the sameTrue to our watchword ‘Disce Aut Discede’We will learn of books and men, and learn to play the game

Within thy shade our fathers trodThe path that leads to man’s estate; They have repaid the debt they owed; They kept thy fame inviolate.

Refrain: And we their loyal sons now bearThe torch, with hearts as sound as oak;Our lusty throats now raise a cheerFor Hartley, Harward, Marsh and Boake.

School of our fathers

Message from the Principal

Page 9: Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony 2011

I consider it a great privilege to pen a few words on the eve of the most significant night for all clubs and societies of Royal College. Organized for the second consecutive year, as a ceremony that commemorates the achievements of all clubs and societies, this event has created the potential for all clubs and societies to reach new heights in terms of the feats that they could accomplish, as well as the recognition that these clubs now receive both within school as well as among other schools in Sri Lanka.

Over a 150 year period, various clubs and societies have flourished into giant establishments that spearhead growth and innovation in their respective fields. These institutions have contributed immensely for most of the activities in school and therefore this ceremony plays a vital role in commending the hard work and immeasurable sacrifices of the students that carry out the functions of these clubs and societies throughout the year. Most importantly, these clubs and societies do not restrict their activities to school but venture out into society to aid those who are in need and would require the assistance of such an institution.

This ceremony attempts to appreciate the efforts taken by the students of these clubs and societies, that make it their vision to better the school and community. This event is a celebration of the values and spirit that clubs and societies embody. I sincerely hope that this venture, commenced by the Prefects’ Council of Royal College would reach new heights with each passing year and thereby raise the status of clubs and societies to a new level and in motivate all students to be involved in such activities. I wish all clubs and societies the best of luck for your future endeavours.

Message from the Senior Games Master

With much pleasure and pride I deliver this message to the souvenir of the felicitation ceremony of clubs and societies of Royal College, 2011. One of the best schools in the world, paving way for more than eight thousand students to enhance their psycho motor skills while gaining academic excellence. Royal college identifies the hard working youth and rewards them at this annual event encouraging and motivating them to involve in project based learning and self learning activities. They experience trial and error, learn to learn, learn through mistakes, innovating thinking and enjoy independent learning outside classroom when they engage in clubs and society related activities.

Prefects, organizing this ceremony, have shown their experience and skill in organizing a grand ceremony of this magnitude and the alumni and other well wishers who sponsored the event should be reminded with gratitude. The Principal Mr. Upali Gunasekara, who believes that hidden capabilities of students are much revealed when they are made to work outside the classroom, has been the star that gives light to the world of work at royal College.

I hope the Chairmen, Secretaries and other responsible office bearers of all clubs and societies will highly benefit and any students who wishes to do honest work in his respective field will be recognized and honored in this process. I wish this endeavour every success and hope everyone will be inspired to head for better spirits.

Message from the Senior Games Master

Page 11: Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony 2011

As we near the end of another educational year at Royal College, it is a privilege to pen down this message for the souvenir of the 2nd Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony. I have always believed Royal College was the perfect school for a student because it offers enormous opportunities for a child, may it be studies, sports or other extra curricular activities. Although many schools offered their students these avenues, none can match let alone outnumber the options that are available at Royal College.

Learning of books and men have made us true sons of the soil but it has been the culture of our country to honour the good work put in by all, irrespective of their different nature. So when others only felicitate the academic and sporting achievements of their students, we have gone beyond by felicitating the efforts of our fellow Royalists in the sphere of Clubs and Societies also. If I may quote a few words of our Principal Sir on occasion of the inaugural Clubs and Societies felicitation ceremony, “Royal College would have had a different face today if not for the enormous sacrifices and the hard work put in by these young men in serving the interests of these associations.”

I trust that all members of these Clubs and Societies would strive harder and improve their grading in the coming year and motivate other fellow Royalists who have not taken part in extra curricular activities so far also to join and gain valuable experience.

Message from the Senior Deputy Head Prefect

Page 12: Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony 2011

I take this opportunity to thank very specially our Principal Sir, Mr. Upali Gunasekera and the two Senior Games Masters Mr. Sudath Liyanagunawardena and Mr. M.T.A. Rauf, who have been our strength in all the activities this year. Mr. H.D.R. Hemachandra teacher in charge of Prefects is thanked for all support given by him and the teachers in charge of these associations for their guidance. The enthusiasm and the labour put in by the members of Clubs and Societies have been immeasurable.

I will be failing in my duty if I do not mention the hard work put in by the Deputy Head Prefect of Clubs & Societies, Althaf Yakoob and the rest of the prefects in organizing this year’s ceremony. Finally may I thank the Special invitees, teachers, parents and my dear Royalists who are present tonight. May the spirit that is being celebrated here today enhances even further in the years to come.

I consider it a privilege to open a few words for the souvenir that is being published to commemorate the annual clubs and society’s felicitation ceremony. I would like to welcome all the respective stakeholders of Royal College who are seated at Navarangahala in this special evening in order to witness this momentous occasion.Tonight`s ceremony intends to recognize and honour all clubs that have strived to excel in their chosen field and serve their members, College and the Country. This ceremony was inaugurated last year as a step to uplift and motivate the clubs and societies, thereby elevate the standards of such institutions to that of sports and academics in College. The guidance of the teacher in charges and the enthusiasm of the leaders of all clubs and societies are highly appreciated and they are the foremost motive to set high standards for the club as well as the College. My, thanks go to the principal, Mr. Upali Gunasekara for extending his corporation and Senior Games Masters Mr. M.T.A. Rauf and Mr. Sudath Liyanagunawardane for guiding the Prefects Council towards making this event a great success. Also the support given by the board members of all clubs which are graded in this evening are valued for helping us in piecing together this event. Last but not least, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my fellow prefects who acted as the back bone of the success of this event. We hope that this night inspires you, with its display of youthful exuberance, dedication and passion.

Message from the Deputy Head Prefect In Charge of Clubs and Societies

Page 14: Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony 2011

It is my privilege to serve as the editor of the souvenir for the Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony, a much awaited event in the school calendar and one of the three main student felicitation ceremonies of the year besides the prize giving and the Annual Colours’ Awarding Ceremony.Among the many unique features of Royal College, a significant attribute is the high involvement of students in extra and co-curricular activities since this helps them understand and meet the standards and values that make a Royalist. The high proportion of responsibility held by students at our school in all club and society activities in all spectra such as innovating concepts, defining them, planning and organizing events on their fields at a large scale, has been highlighted through the years and it would have no doubt contributed to the production of disciplined, high caliber and versatile individuals with high adaptability to various situations.Royalists have always been noted for the unique value system with principles and ethics; objectivity, accountability, reliability and visionary leadership in addition to the unmatched academic excellence that is maintained at Royal. The college has always been renowned for innovative concepts and we take pride in being the developers of new ideas in many fields to be followed by all, be it the initiation of an inter school big match, an annual challenge parade, novel eco friendly concepts, innovative learning and integrated communication systems or even the approach to the finer details of a project.

Several nationally and internationally acclaimed novel projects by our Clubs and Societies have also assisted in the success of Royal as the ultimate setter of standards and a prominent innovator among schools. A recent indication to this may be the adjudication of Royal among the top 30 innovative schools of the world by Microsoft Inc.The continuous guidance and valiant support of the teachers in charge and the college administration while encouraging students to hold various responsibilities in all activities has enabled students to

Editorial

Page 15: Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony 2011

gain hands on experience in diverse fields of activity while making maximum use of the immense resources available at Royal.

Today, we felicitate the members of our clubs for their achievements, through competency, dedication and the passion to realize the goals of their club. It is our hope that this process, which is in no way a competition but an encouragement to all, will continue the increase the enthusiasm of all clubs and societies of the college and empower them to reach greater heights.

I wish to thank, on behalf of my fellow prefects, all those who have contributed in various ways to the success of this ceremony from the principal, senior games masters, teacher in charge of clubs and societies, academic and non academic staff, board members, committee members, to the youngest members of clubs since, at Royal, every person counts and it is this value system that has enabled us to function as a fully integrated institution; one Royal Family, growing steadily. I’m especially grateful to my competent sub-editors Rajika Aluwihare, Kaushika Jayalath, Hemaka Perera and Ameen Mohamed for the able assistance in making this souvenir a success.

Finally I wish good luck and success to our junior members of all clubs who are our future and expect them to continuously develop the standards in all aspects to maintain our College name at the fore front of a variety of fields and always reach towards the bright horizons we see.

From Last year’s perspective To those who think that tonight is just another one of the countless

events that Royal plays host to, you cannot be more mistaken. This event holds

as much significance, to this school and those on stage tonight, as the Prize

Giving or the Colours Awarding Ceremony. For too long, the multitude of clubs

and societies of Royal College had existed in relative obscurity, with no forum

existing to acknowledge their achievements. The host of clubs and societies,

that played such a pivotal role in defining the very history of College, was

somehow never perceived by the students to be on the same level as sports or

academics. The Prize Giving awards prizes for the academically gifted and the

Colours Night felicitates the sportsmen. The fact that no such recognition

was granted to clubs and societies seemed was indicative of this difference

in importance or status; these are the myths that we encountered during our

schooling days. Fuelled by misconception and ignorance, many clung to this

belief that clubs are inferior, frivolous and ineffectual. Those on stage today

would beg to differ.

Clubs and societies have occupied a place of honour in this school since

time immemorial. Ever since their inception, these organisations have carefully

nurtured students through the impressionable years of life to produce men of

caliber. Each and every Royalist who has taken this country or the world by storm

has been a member of at least one club, there are no exceptions to this. There

are countless others who have benefitted from the experience of being involved in

such activities. The reason for this is that involvement in clubs and societies

will provide you with a number of skills and lessons. From drafting letters

to delivering speeches, organising events to sweeping a hall, the things to be

learnt are endless. Not all of experiences may be significant at that time, but

years later when your employer praises you for a well written letter, you will

no doubt remember your humble beginnings in club so and so of Royal College.

The experience that you gain of working with people is invaluable. Royal College

plays host to those from all walks of life-from every background, religion and

race in Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is guaranteed that you will interact, debate,

compromise, and join hands with a variety of students with differences in

thinking and attitude. Such exposure stands you in good stead for the future,

as tact and diplomacy must temper good inter personal skills when fac ing the

people in the outside world. It is my belief that these activities are the most

Page 21: Clubs and Societies Felicitation Ceremony 2011

inclusive of all co-curricular activities, as the wide array of fields and discipline

covered by clubs appeal to broader group of students with multifarious skills beyond

athletic prowess. Thus they grant opportunities of growth and involvement to a greater

number of students in this school.

Take a minute to consider your journey through a certain club or society. Try to

measure your growth as an individual and a team member from the time you joined to the

present. I’m confident that there are a lot more things that you know, have realized

and understand due to this exposure. Every little mistake you made would have taught

you a lesson that will remain with you for life. Every minute accomplishment would

have bolstered your self esteem and driven to you to bigger and bolder feats. Every

failure would have taught you the courage that you need to embrace defeat. Think of

all the people you have met during your tenure in the club. The friends you have met,

the seniors you worked with, those you clashed with- they altered you in a myriad of

ways. Each and every conversation, meeting and interaction has left its imprint on

you and has contributed in making you what you are today. It has shaped your thinking,

your values and has defined you as a unique individual.

So, look past the awards and titles and the glitter of the ceremony. At its

heart, tonight is a celebration of a process, which has lasted over a century, of

imparting wisdom and values to the next generation. It is a celebration of your growth,

from a timid, meek first timer to the strong confident leader that you are today. It is

a celebration of the sacrifices that you have made and the herculean efforts that you

have taken for the greater good of others. It is a celebration of you.

I must urge you, however, to remember that your task is far from complete.

Remember that you are in this position today, having gained something from a particular

club or society, because there were others who were there to recruit you, encourage

you and guide you. You will replace these others at some point of time. Keep in mind

then your duty to do the same. Take every opportunity to motivate others to join. A

vast number of students in Royal gain no exposure to clubs or societies and thereby

lose out on valuable year so development. Remember that what you do or don not do may

have a life altering effect on someone else. The future of that person is in your

hands. Encourage and guide others in times of distress, remembering the support you

received that helped you to get back on your feet. Be a life jacket to someone else.

Keep the spirit of your club alive for the next generation.Only then would this night

have achieved its true purpose.
