Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
It has truly been my pleasure to have served as your District Governor this year. I had the
opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones. I saw a tremendous amount of
enthusiasm throughout the District and also for the love of Lionism. One of the most touching
and inspirational moments this year was when I visited the Coraopolis Lions Club - their
President Lion Joseph Funtal is autistic and to see how far he has come throughout the year
from the first time I met him until now. A special “Thank You” to Lion Tom Toomey for all
that he has done for him.
A special thank you to those Lions who travelled to Wyomissing to participate in this year’s State
Convention. Both resolutions on the ballot passed: The Campus clubs will not have to pay state dues. The second one
dealing with taking $1.50 from the Pride magazine fund and putting it into the administration account also passed (simply
a transfer of funding). Awards were also presented by International President Yamata to the following Lions:
Congratulations to Lion George Belles from the Whitehall Community Lions Club on receiving the International
President’s Leadership Award for all his dedicated and hard work throughout his 35 years as a Lion. And
congratulations to PDG Rich Keller from the White Oak Lions Club on receiving the International President’s
Certificate of Appreciation for his 36 years of service to his club and to the District. Both awards are well-
deserved!
It is with regret that I announce the resignation of 1st VDG Dr. Brandon Smith. Best wishes to him in the future.
When was the last time you were at Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind? Lion Kirby Marchand is planning a bus trip
on July 17th (See additional information about Beacon Lodge on page 18). If you are interested, please call him at 412-
370-0555.
And last, but not least, I want to thank all the Lions who served this year on the District Cabinet and to all the Lions.
Lionesses and Leos throughout the District for all that you have done this year and for the hospitality extended to me
during my visits.
We have all served with Dignity, Harmony and Humanity.
Keep up the good work and THANK YOU.
Yours in friendship,
DG Joe Donkin

It seems like the Whitehall Community Lions Club always has something special going on! At their May 24th meeting
held at the South Hills Country Club, they were honored to have several special guests attending. District Governor Joe
Donkin was invited to install the Club’s officers for 2016-2017. Also present was the Peace Poster Contest winner Juliana
Gahr and her parents along with this year’s two scholarship winners who received $1,000 each. And as always, the food
and fellowship were both outstanding. Submitted by

The Very First Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the
Pittsburgh DeafBlind Lions Club was held on Sunday, May 3rd, 2016 at St.
John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church. The pancakes and sausages
where delicious and everyone had a great time.
The Pittsburgh DeafBlind Club would like to thank all those who helped
make this such a huge success. King Lion Wes Kerlin and Dan Hupp of the
Host Club, Jennifer and Patrick of the Pitt Campus Club Jessica Mock (our
club's interpreter), my sister Bev and friends Tina and Carl for helping with
cooking and cleaning up. This was a big undertaking for the Club but we
hope to continue this fundraiser every year. I want to give a special thanks
Rich McGann, his family and friends, and again, Jessica Mock. They helped
to spread the word about the breakfast and got many deaf
and deafblind people to the event. It was a great time! Submitted by Lion Barb Rebovich

The joint meeting of Region 3, Zones A and B held on Tuesday, May 17th at the 61 Tavern in Pleasant Hills was a huge
success. It was well attended. Our guest speaker was Chris Roach, from Operation Safely Net. This organization works on
the streets of Allegheny County with the homeless and provides medical care free of charge. Started by Dr. Jim Withers,
an Emergency Department MD, who was disappointed with the medical care homeless people got in the ED took to the
streets to help the citizens who really need it the most. They know where all the camps are and go out at least 3 times a
week to meet with them. We learned not only MDs provide care but medical residents, RN and nursing students, case
managers, etc. They give complete care. It is wonderful to know that there are people who truly serve their communities
like the Lions. Chris was given gift cards from stores so they can buy bottled water and other necessities. White tube
socks, deodorant for men and women and other provisions were given for the homeless.
I would like to thank our DG Joe Donkin for attending. It was nice of him to support our meeting. I would also like to
thank Lion George Belles (Zone Chair of Zone B) and Lion Mary Ann Belles for all of the time and patience they showed
while getting this meeting together. The venue and food was great.
Thanks to all who attended. Submitted by Barbara Rebovich

McKEESPORT LIONS SPONSORING “CONCERT IN THE PARK” AGAIN!
McKeesport Lions Club members, along with other Lions Club members, participated in
collecting and sorting food for the annual Postal Workers Food Drive on 5/14/16. The
Pittsburgh area food drive is coordinated by club member Chuck Jarrell. Chuck attended
various meetings and functions to solicit donations to purchase bags to distribute to area
residents to fill and set out for postal workers and volunteers to collect on 5/14/16. He
also coordinated volunteers to help collect from residents and unload at post offices and
food pantries. An estimated 20,000 pounds was collected at the McKeesport post office
branch.

Back in 1983, I had requested copies of the clubs that with their charter dates and the individual in District Operations at
Lions International was kind enough to send me copies of the index cards that were used when clubs were being formed. I
received 10 legal sized pages (printed on front and back), with each page containing copies of six clubs. Out of the sixty
clubs I have “cards” for, only 27 of those clubs are still in existence today. I had the opportunity to visit all 60 of those
clubs and how heart-breaking it is to reflect back on all those clubs that are no longer around. I’m passing some of them
on to you in this and future issues. I hope you enjoy looking at these cards over the next several months. PDG Harold Fletcher
