Mars Hill Mission TripIt was yet another wonderful week of mission work in Mars Hill, NC this year. Twenty-three members of our CMPC community joined 35 volunteers from Shadyside Presbyterian Church (in Pittsburgh) to rehabilitate six different homes over the course of the week. Projects ranged from painting to laying down a new floor, from building a new deck to renovating a kitchen—all done while our children had a wonderful VBS-type experience on campus. The weather was mostly cooperative and even rather cool—though some of our crew did have to finish building a deck in the rain on Friday and were soaked through and through! We were all grateful for God’s provision throughout the week and the experience left an indelible mark on each of us. We thank you for your prayers and support and hope that you will consider joining us as we head back again next summer. Tentative dates for the 2015 trip are July 12-18th.

Weird Animals Vacation Bible SchoolWhat do you get when you combine 104 kids, 55 volunteers, fun sing along songs, silly games, meaningful bible lessons, stories about real-life kids, and tasty snacks? You get an AMAZING week at Weird Animals VBS!

We had an overwhelming response to our vacation bible school program this summer! We are so very thankful for the kids that filled our hallways and hearts during this exciting week! The building was full of laughter, singing, and smiles all week long! Each day the children and volunteers enjoyed singing songs with each other and learning bible lessons that taught that Jesus’ love is one of a kind and He loves each of us with that one of a kind love! Thanks to our awesome Critter Cafe crew we had delicious snacks each day too! Weird and wild games and videos about real kids living the real life adventure of knowing and following Jesus rounded our fun days together! The week ended with over 250 kids, families, and volunteers joining us for an end of VBS cookout! Our church was bursting at the seams!

This week could not have been possible without our amazing volunteers! They shared the love of Jesus with each child that crossed through our doors! If you weren’t able to volunteer this year, or if your kids were not able to join us, don’t miss out on the fun next year! Mark your calendars now for Everest Vacation Bible School, June 22-26th!

GenOn Youth SummitOn the bus heading home from the GenOn Youth Summit on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, I asked the youth what they liked about the week. Their responses were:

The music, meeting new people from different churches, spending time with other teenagers, the dance, Men’s Vespers, three - hour worship Friday night, mission day, the talent show, Women’s Vespers, activities each day (soccer especially), getting to see old friends from last year! “It was fun!” “It was good!”

Not one said “I don’t know” or “Nothing.” It was a week to escape from busy-ness, boredom, and the pressures of the world. And lest you think kids don’t have pressures of the world, drop in sometime to “Say So Time” of the summit’s Friday evening worship when hearts are poured out in thanks for how God worked in their lives over the week (“Let the redeemed of the Lord say so”).

It was a week to engage in daily Bible study, daily worship, and Christ-centered relationships. Understanding the need to treat one another as a child of God floated throughout the dining hall, on the playing field, in the dorm, and well... everywhere.

For high schoolers it was a week of “Jesus Camp” to think, pray, play, worship, sing, listen, and serve with other youth and lots of awesome adults of all ages--living out LOGOS away from CMPC. For college age youth it was the opportunity to provide leadership and deepen relationships with peers and mentors. For adults it was a way to use God-given gifts and interests and detach from the norm. Our CMPC adults led activities (soccer, ultimate frisbee and drawing) and Bible study. And it was fun. And good.

The GenOn Summit is like “one big youth group” as multiple churches of multiple denominations grow in Christ and connect with one another. Look at the all-group picture and you won’t see big clumps of those from the same church--certainly here and there but mostly groups are all mixed up. A beacon of hope for the wider church.

Wednesday’s mission day was different from the all-summit projects we have done in previous years. This time we traveled in Bible study groups to serve all over the city of Wheeling. We made deviled eggs at the soup kitchen, sorted clothing and other donations at a distribution center, played with children at their summer program, cleaned apartments in a retirement home, and weeded and mulched in a park. Lots of stories and pictures were shared around the dinner tables and at “Talk-It-Over Time” back on campus that night!

Some youth needed to be convinced to sign up for the summit, others couldn’t wait having heard about it for years from older siblings and friends. Many returned for their second, third, or sixth time. The GenOn Summit is a week set apart, a mountaintop experience, a retreat, an opportunity to serve, and summer camp. I know that it changes lives for the better. The week is difficult to comprehend without the experience. It’s well worth the vacation time that it costs most adults and it’s well worth the risk the youth take to attend for the first time. Most return again and again and again.

We are blessed to have a supportive and generous church community that helps us keep the cost for youth low and that fully funds adult leaders (we need to take one adult for every 4 youth). Thank you, thank you, thank you for being part of this experience for many! ~ Liz Perraud

LOGOS CMPC’s Wednesday Night Inter-generational Program

Our favorite Wednesday night inter-generational program will resume in October! The first night of LOGOS is Wednesday, October 1st. For all interested adults, there will be a Volunteer Training night on Wednesday, September 24th. Be sure to save these two dates.

LOGOS is a mid-week ministry open to all young people from preschool through high school. Every Wednesday night, all young people participate in four parts offering a “whole child” approach to Christian nurture: Bible Study, Recreation, Family Time (dinner with the church “family”) and Worship Skills.

Christ Memorial Christian Preschool

Sunday Morning Under Construction! The Christian Education committee is currently revamping the Sunday School program, moving away from the traditional 9:15 a.m. Sunday School program. Watch the September Herald and Friday E-News for more details.

Sunday ExperienceSunday Experience continues every Sunday even during the summer. Children from preschool through grade three can leave the worship service at the end of “Moment with Children” and participate in our Sunday Experience activities downstairs.

Are you looking for a way to contribute to CMPC? The Christian Education committee has a number of opportunities for you. We need teachers for the fall Sunday Experience program. Volunteers sign up for one month out of the year – just a four week commitment. CE provides the curriculum and the materials and volunteers teach only four Sundays during the year with an assistant to help them each Sunday.

For information about either opportunity, please contact Linda Johnson at [email protected] or Debbie O’Neal at [email protected].

Summer is moving by fast as we prepare for the coming school year. Look for our Apple Wishing Tree in the downstairs entrance. If you would like to purchase any items from the tree, please remove that specific apple and write your name on the apple left on the tree. There will be a basket placed under the tree to place your items.

On August 14th our staff is attending an Early Childhood Conference. Please keep them in your hearts and prayers as they spend the day learning new ideas and techniques to enrich their classes. The staff returns on August 25th to set up their classrooms.

The evening of Thursday, August 28th is very exciting as the preschool staff and our church family welcomes the incoming preschool families. We look forward to providing these families with a safe, nurturing, and welcoming church environment. As the school year progresses, please remember to keep our preschool families in your prayers.

Grace Notes Thanks to everyone who participated in musical offerings this summer. We have been blessed by your gifts! Haley Barham sang Into My Heart (remember singing it around a campfire?) and a medley of Will the Circle Be Unbroken/This Little Light of Mind which was a lot of fun to hear! Thanks, Allen, for the wonderful offering of Fernando Ortega’s arrangement of How Firm a Foundation and thanks Lindsey Kim for playing the flute so beautifully for arrangements of Amazing Grace and Simple Gifts. Thanks, also to Marilyn Mills for praising our Lord with her wonderful voice as she sang I Am and God is Exalted. As I write this, we are looking forward to hearing from Joe and Gail Marinelli when they sing the old-time gospel song, I’ll Fly Away and from Courtney Ashman when she sings Here I Am to Worship.

During the month of August we look forward to hearing Marilyn and Kelsey Mills in a vocal/instrumental duet, Laura Yawney playing Be Thou My Vision/My Shepherd Will Supply My Need on her oboe, Noah and Lucas Teshome, the Pakistani Community, and Don Wade.

Have you heard? We Need Singers in the Trinity Choir! Rehearsals will begin September 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Bells of Joy is also welcoming new ringers. Please join us!

Grace and peace to each of you.

The Rebel Planet Part II[originally done in the early 1980’s]

Last month we learned that Satan’s fall was due to his choice to be like God, and also that Adam’s fall was due to a similar choice - Satan told Eve the fruit would give her the same knowledge as God. So Eve, and then Adam, disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. In consequence, God cursed the earth and drove Adam and Eve out of Eden, but gave a promise of a Redeemer.

We also learned Satan is battling God for power over souls and we must choose whom we serve – God or Mammon (Matthew 6: 24, Luke 16: 13).

CMPC HeraldChrist Memorial Presbyterian Church

In the Bible there are over 100 references to Satan by one of his names (Satan, the devil, Belial, Beezelbub, the evil one). In addition, the writers of the N.T., Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter, and Jude, all speak of him and his power directly by name, or make references to him or his angels (not included in the above count) such as the power of darkness (Col 1: 13; Eph 6: 12) or fallen angels (II Pet2: 4; Jude 1: 6); or principalities and powers (Rom 8: 38; Eph 3: 10; Eph 6: 12; Col 1: 16; Col 2: 15), which indicates their recognition of him as a spiritual power.

But the good news is:

Christ is the head over every power and authority (principality and power KJV). (See Eph 1: 21; Col 1: 16; Col 2: 10.) In Part III, we will rejoice in the Victorious Christ!

Since we are living on a rebel planet, it is of critical importance that we know God’s battle plan, and seek His guidance. My prayer for you is the same as Paul’s in Eph 1: 17-21.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

Now, let us explore what we can learn about Satan in the New Testament.

1. “Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy, thedevil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (I Pet. 5: 8 NIV).

2. “As for you, you were dead in your transgressionsand sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Eph. 2: 1-2 NIV).

3. “Now is the time for judgment on this world; nowthe prince of this world will be driven out” (Jn. 12: 31 NIV). “I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me” (Jn. 14: 30-31 NIV). “...and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned” (Jn 16: 11 NIV). Three times Jesus refers to Satan as the prince of this world. From this section we have learned four things about Satan:

1. He is the enemy of God and man.2. Paul referred to him as the prince of the power ofthe air. (KJV)3. Three times it is recorded that Jesus referred tohim as the prince of this world.

Another subtle recognition was when Satan tempted Jesus (Mt. 4: 8-10). He offered him all the kingdoms of the world, “...if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus did not dispute Satan’s right to offer this power, but responded with scripture, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” (The Word of God is our protection, also, from Satan).
