Introducing CMS Pioneer Mission Leadership TrainingAre you someone who doesn’t want to stop doing to start
studying? Do you want to learn from leading pioneer
practitioners?
Are you already involved in pioneer mission, and could use a
supportive network?
Are you gearing up for lay or ordained pioneer ministry?
Are you excited by the prospect of a creative curriculum
that includes mission spirituality, mission entrepreneurship,
theology and action?
If so, then the CMS Pioneer Mission Leadership Course
is for you.
For more than 200 years CMS has been training people in mission to
cross boundaries and take on new challenges.
With a vast mission network that spans years, miles and cultures and
an extensive mission library in the CMS Crowther Centre for Mission
Education, CMS is poised to become a hub for pioneer mission training
for years to come.
How can I participate?There are several ways to participate and a number of
qualifications available:
1. Do a Foundation Degree in Ministry. Through partnership with
the Diocese of Oxford, we can offer students a Foundation degree
in Ministry from Oxford Brookes University. This encompasses 16
modules. Put it together how you like, as long as you complete all 16
modules with a minimum of three a year.
2. Do a Certificate in Ministry, which encompasses eight modules
(accredited by Oxford Brookes University through a partnership with
the Diocese of Oxford).
3. Take individual modules at your convenience (not accredited).
4. Attend the pioneer practitioner sessions. These are based in Oxford
at CMS and are attended by pioneers in the region who are training at
different colleges.
5. Credits from the certificate and foundation degree are transferable,
so you can put them towards a BA degree.
Why pioneers? A Q&A with Course Leader Jonny BakerWhere did the idea for the course come from? We’re seeing a surge in mission activity all over the country – often at the edge of what we think of as traditional church. But people who are pioneering often feel lonely and perhaps haven’t had the chance to enrich their grassroots experience with reflection and study. In the Mission Shaped Church report of 2004, the Church of England called out for the lens of cross-cultural mission to shape training in pioneering mission in the UK. Step forward CMS…What do you mean by pioneer mission leaders? We’re looking for lay or ordained people who are committed to pioneering mission. CMS has been training and sending pioneers for over 200 years, in the shape of our mission partners. Recognising the importance of pioneers, the Church of England has a special category of “ordained pioneer minister” for those who want to develop church in new ways.What can you tell us about the course CMS has started? It’s a brilliant new training pathway for pioneer mission leaders, both lay and ordained. It’s very participative, on-the-job training, leading to a validated foundation degree. It enables people who want to lead the way in mission to learn, practise and reflect in context – with experienced pioneers.Why is it CMS that’s doing this? Partly because the Church of England invited us to! They recognise the wealth of mission experience in CMS and that our context-based, mission-focused learning programme is very different to anything else on offer. When is this happening? A pilot programme began in September 2010 with 10 students, and it has been so well-received that we are launching the full programme Autumn 2011. Who is it for? Lay people; people selected as ordained pioneer ministers; people selected for ordination through CMS – CMS people in mission – basically anyone who has a passion for pioneer mission can participate in one way or another.
