EARNING OUR REPUTATION AS A MODEL OF SCHOOL SAFETY At a time when school safety is in the national spotlight, CMSD continues to outpace other districts in the proactive measures we take to keep students safe every day.
Metal detectors at the entrance of every building and X-ray machines in our high schools have proven successful in keeping weapons out of our schools and in providing daily reminders to students and families that safety is a high priority in every CMSD school.
Security ofcers are stationed in every school building and are trained in the nation’s best practices in crisis prevention, social and emotional learning and crisis response.
Caring CMSD security ofcers are seen by students as an integral part of their school experience. School-based security ofcers, investigator counselors and mobile patrol ofcers that monitor our school grounds are state-certifed safety professionals who greet students and provide professional support to help them make good choices for themselves and others every day.

NONTRADITIONAL EDUCATION CHOICES
NONTRADITIONAL SCHOOL PROGRAMS
The Nontraditional Education Ofce (NEO) is designed to coordinate, support and implement strategies that give students and families alternative pathways to achieve college and career readiness. The ofce includes Home Schooling, Virtual Academy, The School of One, Residential Schools and The Downtown Education Center.
These programs provide students an opportunity to move through an approved curriculum that will prepare them for graduation and beyond. Wrapround supports, special education services and academic counseling are provided.
Home Schooling is a right of parents under state law. Families must provide resources and a curriculum that prepares students to meet the same academic criteria as students who attend traditional school. If a parent decides to return their child to public school, they must identify the most recent grade reached. The school will decide placement.
Virtual Academy is an online curriculum provided by the Educational Service Center of Ohio (ESC). Young people participating in the Virtual Academy may also participate in CMSD athletics, afterschool programs and other events. A resource coordinator works with families to minimize barriers to student success. Students are assigned to take state mandated assessments at their assigned home school locations.
Residential Programs are treatment programs housed inside the Cleveland Christian Home and Children’s Aid Society at the Jones Home. Teachers are licensed by the state of Ohio and provide the same quality of instruction as that of a traditional school building. A student may be a resident from two days to two years after being assigned by the courts or a hospital, or referred by a parent.
The School of One is dedicated to producing successful graduates by ofering a diferentiated, individualized, online educational experience embedded with academic, social and emotional services necessary to ensure college and career readiness. Students are a part of a non-traditional educational team where they attend one of eight District sites – each with a fexible schedule and no more than 20 students per session. Students are assigned to an educator that is dedicated to their progress toward fulflling graduation requirements.
The School of One sites: Collinwood High School, East Tech Campus, Glenville Campus, Rhodes Campus, John Adams Campus, Lincoln-West Campus and John Marshall Campus. The eighth site is at The Foundry, Cleveland’s Community Rowing and Sailing Center, which requires physical activity and includes employment opportunities.
Our staf works collaboratively with students to identify academic needs, areas of interest and barriers that may limit success. Teachers and students collaborate to develop an educational plan to create a new path to academic and personal success, and fexible scheduling allows students to take college courses through Tri-C. Formal graduation takes place three times a year, allowing students to immediately begin their path to college and career.
