Why are there phases?
• The phases of the moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.
Solar Eclipse
• Most of the time the moon travels a little above or below the path of the sunlight that shines on earth.
Umbra= darkest part of the moon’s shadow = total eclipse
Penumbra= large part of the moon’s shadow = partial eclipse
Where you live on earth determines if you see a total eclipse, or partial

Lunar Eclipse
• During a lunar eclipse, Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.

Umbra = Total Lunar Eclipse
• Unlike a total eclipse, a total lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere on earth when the moon is visible.
The reddish tint happens because the Earth’s atmosphere bends some sunlight toward the moon.
