Welcome to Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days ROGER LANNINGSW Iowa Hot Air Balloon Committee Chairperson

Welcome to the 37th an-nual Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days event! The Bal-loon Days Committee and I are very excited for another fun-filled weekend Septem-ber 19-21. This is a great event for Creston and the surround-ing communities for all ages to enjoy.

I would like to personally invite each of you to the many activities that are scheduled for the weekend. A few of the highlights are: Balloon flights morning and evening (weath-er permitting), a fabulous pa-rade Saturday morning, which will feature surrounding school’s marching bands, local

businesses and the bal-loon pilots with their s p o n s o r s and numer-ous other entries.

The flea market will be located on Maple Street with a variety of vendors of-fering food and crafts near the depot. Multiple activities are scheduled at the airport, so please refer to the Balloon Days schedule in the Creston News Advertiser for all of the scheduled activities for the weekend.

I would like to personally thank the balloon pilots and their sponsors, because with-out them this event would not

be possible. I would also like to thank my balloon commit-tee for all of their hard work and dedication which makes this event go so smoothly. Lastly, I would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce, specifically Peggy Van Pelt and Ellen Gerharz for their dedication to this special weekend.

If you see a balloon pilot, a balloon sponsor or a commit-tee member please give them a simple “thank you.” Creston is a great community which is evident by the enormous sup-port of this event. So, thank you Creston for making this event spectacular.

Keep up with all of the events and weather an-nouncements by tuning into KSIB Radio.

READY, SET, GLOW: Balloonists light up the sky at the Creston Municipal Airport last year during the 36th annual Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days weekend. This year’s night glow event is scheduled at dusk Sept. 20.

Indianola native takes reins as balloonmeister The 37th an-

nual Southwest Iowa Hot Air Bal-loon Races is back Sept. 19-21.

This year, Cres-ton’s premier hot air balloon event welcomes new balloon meister (race director) Jim Gebhart of Indianola.

Gebhart, 58, is filling the shoes of longtime race di-rector Rob Bartholomew of Carlisle.

“Rob did this for 30 years and thought it was a good record to go out on,” Gebhart said.

Gebhart was asked by Bar-tholomew to take the reigns once he

decided it was time to step down.

Gebhart said Bar-tholomew is a really good friend and the person who helped him learn to fly

more than 30 years ago dur-ing the National Balloon Championship at Simpson College where the two bal-loon enthusiasts first met.

Shortly after their first meeting, Gebhart started to learn from Bartholomew by crewing for him in the

1970s. Although Gebhart is a self-proclaimed “fun fly-er,” Bartholomew drilled a “safety first and fun a close second” mentality into his head.New role

Gebhart’s main role as balloon meister is to make

sure flying conditions are safe before deciding to send balloonists into the air. The wind threshold for balloons is between 8 and 10 mph and winds at altitude can vary greatly from ground level.

“I have a whole gamut of

preplanning, planning, fly-ing and safety. I wear a lot of hats,” Gebhart said.

After meeting with a weather and safety officer, the decision is up to Gebhart.

He also works closely with the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We have a safe record and we are going to keep it that way,” Gebhart said.

Gebhart is no stranger to calling the shots. He has served as race director for Balloon Days Classics in Indianola in 2004 and 2005, and for races in Clin-ton, Marshalltown and Galesburg, Ill.In Creston

In Creston, Gebhart and his son Aaron, who is also a hot air balloon pilot, have been assisting Bar-tholomew with scoring the balloon day races for the past 14 years.

“It’s a fun event to at-tend, especially, in the fall,” Gebhart said.

This year, weather per-mitting, Gebhart might look into changing up the

competition.“I’ve got some things up

my sleeve,” Gebhart said. This year, Gebhart will

stay grounded as he makes sure other pilots are taken care of during the event.Activities

This year’s balloon days will kick off with a Friday night fun flight 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and a Friends of the Library Collectors night book sale 4 to 8 p.m. at Lincoln School Sept. 19.

On Saturday, festivities spread throughout Cres-ton. Weather permitting, a Hare and Hound balloon race, or chase, will launch at 6:30 a.m. Spectators are

encouraged to attend this early event to watch the balloons as they fill with hot air and take flight. Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket and cash for those planning on purchasing anything from the food or souvenir stands.

As runners and walkers take off 8 a.m. in McKin-ley Park for the Balloon Days 5K, flea market ven-dors will open their stalls uptown.

For those interested in learning about Creston’s history, the train caboose on Adams Street, model railroad and Presidential

doll display will be open.Afternoon activities

include Creston Hot Air Balloon Days Show and Shine at Kilgore’s RV, 601 Sheldon St., self guided tours of the Union Coun-ty Historical Complex in McKinley Park, and a pet show, pedal pull and bal-loon race at the airport.

As day becomes dusk, balloon pilots will put on a night glow show at the airport. The weekend will wrap up with a final race 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

For more information and a schedule of events, see page 3 in this special section.

GEBHART: About 40 registered balloonists will compete in the 37th annual southwest Iowa Balloon Days. Last year’s winner was Matt Fenster of Bellevue, Neb. Events kick off Friday evening with a fun flight and conclude Sunday with a pilot’s breakfast. See a full schedule on page 3C.

Carlisle pilot returns to Creston Balloon Days By JAKE WADDINGHAMCNA associate [email protected]

After spending time working as a crew member, scoring events and being around other balloon pilots, Ken Bolton decided it was time to switch his hobby.

He sold his 2003 Honda VTX motorcycle and purchased his balloon “Fired Up.” He starting flying for fun and participating in competitions.

Bolton obtained his license in 2008 and participated in the Cres-ton Balloon Days the next two years.

“I am not a very competitive pi-lot,” Bolton said. “I have a lot of fun doing the competitive events, and I do believe it helps make you a better pilot to fly to the targets. If I don’t make it or if I don’t score well, it doesn’t ruin my day.”

Bolton works for Principal Fi-nancial Group as an accountant in the retirement and pension area. He has spent 45 years in the busi-ness.

Because of Bolton’s busy sched-

ule with his fam-ily — wife Shan-da, son Jerry and daughter Shelby — he had to miss Creston’s annual event in the past.

Now that Jerry is a junior at Iowa State University and Shelby is at La James Cosmetology School in Des Moines, Bolton said he is excited to add Creston’s Balloon Days back on his schedule.

“It is just one hell of a town that takes in the event and makes it what it is,” Bolton said. “There is always something going on in town if they want to be out doing something.”

His son recently received his pi-lot’s license, but will not be com-peting in Balloon Days this year. He will be joining Bolton and Shanda for the weekend event.

“He has not flown any events yet,” Bolton said. “He wants to get some more hours under his belt first.”

Bolton said his favorite part of

ballooning is being with his family.“I have fun as long as we can

fly,” Bolton said.Bolton has also participated in

the Balloon Classic in Indianola and the balloon festival in Ot-tumwa.

He is planning a trip to Albu-querque, N.M., for vacation and the Albuquerque Balloon Festival with Jim, Cheryl and Aaron Geb-hard.

“The first time I attended the event was last year,” Bolton said. “It was amazing to see so many balloons and so many people at the event.”

While he enjoys flying, Bolton said he hopes to one day purchase another motorcycle to continue both of his favorite hobbies.

Arends: Storm leads to discovery of passion By BAILEY POOLMANCNA staff [email protected]

It all started with a storm.Shane Arends, 50, was chasing a

storm in McCook, Neb., when he met a customer of his in town and got to know him.

“I was chasing a hail storm in McCook, and got to know a guy there fairly well, one of my cus-tomers, and he asked if I’d stick around for the weekend and help him with his balloon,” Arends said.

And, three years later, Arends will be participating in his second Creston Balloon Days celebration.Balloon Days

Arends’ first visit to Creston was September 2013, where he stayed with the Fastenow family.

“The Fastenow family was our sponsor, and we kept that rela-tionship going on Facebook,” Ar-ends said. “We talk to each other at least on a monthly basis, and we have some new friends that we wouldn’t have had before.”

Arends and his crew prep the balloon and check on weather throughout the weekend. Arends said it takes a minimum of three people to fly, but the more people, the easier it is.

“Once you get there, make sure you have the crew, if the weather’s good and you have the people to do it,” Arends said. “The crew is so important, and without them none of these balloon pilots would be flying any given day.”

After the event, Arends was awarded with the rookie of the year award.

“I just felt like I got lucky hit-ting targets with my bean bags,” Arends said. “Just worked out, picked a good place to fly from and able to hit some targets.”

Arends continued to say the Creston community was an experi-ence of a lifetime.

“The people were just phenom-enal, from the people who ran the event to the Fastenow family to the people in the community,” Ar-ends said. “You could just feel the community supporting the balloon

event. I’ve never experienced any-thing like that. It was an awesome feeling because everybody was as excited as I was.”

BallooningWhile in McCook, Arends

helped crew a balloon flight, and within minutes he knew he wanted to pilot.

“I was hooked about 15 minutes into it,” Arends said.

Arends went through training and became li-censed after one year.

“I’ve found that a lot of pepole that do it are adven-turer-type people that don’t sit on the and watch TV,” Arends said. “It’s the team-work to set the balloon up, it’s a crew thing. It takes a crew to set a balloon up and take off. I like being around the people and the team-work it takes to be involved and make it a success.”

Arends has been piloting

hot air balloons for three years now. He typically at-tends events in the Mid-west, such as Creston and Wakefield, Neb., but plans to expand to other areas of the United States such as Albuquerque, N.M.

“You can go to different events around the United States to meet people, and everybody’s happy,” Ar-ends said. “It’s usually a fun event you’re participating in.”

Arends also said his family supports him in the events.

“My oldest son, he’s 26,

he probably helps me on 90 percent of the flights that I take. He’s kind of my crew leader,” Arends said. “Ev-erybody’s involved in it. My daughter, my youngest son, my wife. ... Everybody en-joys it.”Background

Arends, of Grand Island, Neb., is a storm chaser and works for his family-owned business in roofing, siding, windows and gutters.

He has been married to his wife Lisa for 28 years, and together they have two sons and one daughter.

ARENDS: Shane Arends of Grand Island, Neb., was named last year’s Rookie of the Year at the southwest Iowa Balloon Days in Creston. Arends is sponsored by the Fastenow Family.
