Letter from the CEOThis is an exciting time for everyone associated with the Center for Nonprofit Excellence as we begin our 15th year of service. The past few years have witnessed tremendous growth in our work within the sector, and we have much planned for the future. But in order to truly appreciate what is yet to come, we first need to look back at the Center’s past accomplishments.

LOOKING BACK...The Center’s first 14 years have been filled with some important breakthroughs, innovative collaboration, and significant work. All of that is thanks to the people who helped guide our journey to this point; the members of the CNPE Board of Directors and our dedicated staff.

Along with the dozens of people who volunteered their time and energy to serve on the CNPE Board, the Center’s talented team of staff and volunteers provided training to 15,565 professionals, conducted more than 4,000 consultation engagements, established online organizational and Board assessment tools, created an online common grant application, commissioned four foundation directories, published two books, conducted two major peer city studies of the nonprofit sector, produced six capital campaign reports, and showcased the strength of the sector through 14 annual award ceremonies.

LOOKING AHEAD...As I step down to explore my next chapter in life, I am filled with gratitude for the work all of the organizations connected through CNPE do to make our community more vibrant, just and inclusive. It is time now to turn up the torch even more through CNPE’s future leadership. Following an in-depth transition plan, CNPE will usher in its second CEO, led by a Board with an ever-brighter vision of the Louisville’s region nonprofit sector and the role CNPE can play to optimize its impact.

We know that the nonprofit sector in the Louisville region – which accounts for $7.8 billion, or 13.5 percent of the local economy – is among one of the strongest in the country. Looking ahead, it is poised to become even stronger with new leadership and boldness. One such initiative starting in 2015 is the BoardMatch program, a web portal that will enable emerging and existing talent in our community to easily locate Boards on which to serve and vastly extend the range for nonprofits in search of talented new Board members.

Buoyed by 36 of the top 40 nonprofits in the area listed among its members, along with hundreds of others that receive little recognition but improve thousands of lives, CNPE’s Board, staff and volunteers have good reason to embrace the future with the fervor and excitement of a group on a mission. This is an exciting time for CNPE. We not only invite you to join us, we absolutely need you to be part of it.

All my best,

Kevin Connelly, CEO

Letter from Board ChairThe Center for Nonprofit Excellence is proud of the accomplishments it has made through its partnerships with the philanthropic, nonprofit, governmental and business sectors over the past 15 years. It has developed a strong framework to build upon in its value to the community through the roles of capacity-builder, collaborator and convener.

We owe much to the work of Kevin Connelly and his dedicated team in building a high quality, mission-driven organization. Authenticity, integrity, competence and service-first are recognized as the hallmarks of organizations that people trust, and CNPE breathes and lives these values every day.

I also want to thank the Board, Kevin and his team for the thorough preparation to navigate our current leadership transition, and for helping map a future that envisions a community that becomes ever more compassionate and effective in fostering a vibrant quality of life for all of its members.

Best regards,

Donald Vish,Board Chair

WHO ARE WE & WHAT DO WE DO?

The lifeblood, energy and strength of CNPE are its members. At time of publication, there are 388 nonprofit members, 46 corporate members, 25 foundation members and 45 individual members.

CNPE has been offering more free networking events for members, increasing the number of specific one-on-one member contacts and expanding the partnership role that members and CNPE can play together. CNPE saw a surge in collaboration among members. In fact, there were 24 combined nominations for the Pyramid Award for the Art of Collaboration in 2013 and 2014, compared with 10 for the preceding two years, an increase of 140 percent.

“Our goal is simple: we want to know our members and help them meet their needs. There are always challenges for nonprofits, and the ones we face today are very different from even three to five years ago, largely because of the growth in technology -- we see these challenges as opportunities.”- Sarah Stalker, CNPE Membership ServicesCoordinator

CNPE training attendance grew 47% in 2014through a partnership with the city.

Attendance in learning events includes some 70 courses offered throughout the year, plus

three flagship programs:

Seminars and Learning EventsAttendance in the CNPE Learning programs grew 47 percent with more than 500 professionals being able to take advantage of free courses that lead toward a special certification in a new Financial Empowerment case management model.

Aside from the partnership work with the Department of Community Services and nonprofit organizations, most other areas of training attendance remained fairly much the same as the preceding year, with Organizational Development, Leadership, Governance and Fund Development attracting the most participation.

Feedback collected at the end of each session revealed exceptionally positive ratings, with 1,332 participants scoring their satisfaction level at an average of 4.7 on a 5-point scale. Plans for the next training calendar will offer nonprofits an extended view of seminar offerings, enabling them to better plan for their specific learning interests and needs.

“In the past year, my staff has grown due to some new grants/funding. I’ve struggled bringing them into the fold, and the fold accepting them. I held a two-day retreat. One day we concentrated on creativity. I used the reading and we did the activities. The next day we did a brainstorming while bowling. Wonderful creative ideas plus a new level of bonding.”- Jene C. The City of Louisville signed the Charter for Compassionate Cities on 11-11-11, and because of the synergy of missions, the Center for Nonprofit Excellence became the fiscal sponsor/agent for Compassionate Louisville in 2014. CNPE passed a resolution in 2013 to become a more mindful organization of the core meaning of compassion in the way we treat each other and the many people and organizations with whom we interact each day. Contact Compassionate Louisville or CNPE for guidance in ways your organization can more fully embrace compassion through this process.

This is the fifth year CNPE has offered an association health care plan. A partnership with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Altman Insurance Services allows groups with more than one employee and less than 100 to explore benefits. All indicators are that this may be the strongest savings for members to date.

CNPE Members can be listed, at no charge, as a member of DonorsResource.org and post their wish-list items. DonorsResource.org is a nationally acclaimed project launched in Portland, OR, and was gifted to CNPE in 2014. It is beautifully simple: individuals and companies wishing to donate useful resources to nonprofits may post them on DonorsResource.org, and nonprofits who are registered with DonorsResource.org may claim those articles (and post their wish lists).

Consulting ServicesCNPE Consulting Services are customized to meet the client’s needs and focus primarily in the areas of Board Development, Strategic Planning, Organizational Alignment, Fundraising Fundamentals and Communication Planning & Integration. Consulting services grew by 76 percent in 2014 through the use of a cadre of adjunct consultants.

In 2013, Eric Schmall completed his 12th year of service as the Director of Consultation. Upon retirement (read “re-wirement”), he became CNPE’s Consultant Emeritus and now engages clients as one of our adjunct consultants. Ed Cortas, who holds a master’s degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of Notre Dame, became our new Director of Consulting Services. While Ed offers consulting services directly to clients, he also coordinates the engagement of a highly talented cadre of consultants (see listing of consultants in appendix).

Thirty-five consultations were completed in FY 2014. In addition to the sliding fee based consulting work, CNPE also provides its members with short, free research, information and referral services, providing 253 such services in FY 2014.

Revenue for 2013and 2014Over the past several years, CNPE has realized around 60 percent of its income from earned revenue (membership, training, consultation and specialized services). Foundations have continued to play an important role to assure that a centralized, affordable one-stop resource is available to area nonprofit organizations.

Expense Breakdown for 2014Program expenses accounted for 80 percent of expenditures, mostly in staff salaries. Administrative and fundraising expenses comprised 20 percent of overall costs.

Note that the Statement of Cash Flows for each of the two years shows a profit in FY 2013 of $145,667 and a deficit in FY 2014 of $52,731. The two years, however, are more accurately viewed as one time period, with the investment and building of the BoardMatch portal, the growth of consulting work, and the transition and strategic planning process. The net income of FY 13 and FY 14 was $92,936.

Private foundations invested significantly more in 2013 than they have done in more typical years. CNPE received the majority of grant funding for BoardMatch in FY 13, a web portal that will enable nonprofits to more easily locate the Board talent they need to succeed and thrive – and for that talent to connect with organizations for which they have a passion. St. George’s Scholar InstituteSt George’s Scholar Institute (formerly known as St. George’s Community Center) is a critical resource for the youth of West Louisville, providing a welcoming and educational environment for middle and high school students. St. George’s Scholar Institute, located at 26th and Oak Street, was established in 1964 in conjunction with the reopening of the neighboring St. George’s Episcopal Church. The after-school and summer programs prepare students for college, teach leadership skills, and explore a variety of careers. On a daily basis, they provide homework help, a Dare to Care Kids Café meal, and organized recreational activities.

“Two years ago, St. George’s made a decision to improve upon its rich history by ensuring the sustainability and restructuring the entire organization’s strategic plight towards the future. We consulted with several different community stakeholders and non-profit professionals and all of them repeatedly steered us to the expertise of CNPE. We met with CNPE and Mr. Eric Schmall for six to nine months to help give us an honest assessment of our history, our present and strategically map out our future. After a deliberate and painstaking process, we were able to produce a three-year road map towards a renewed vision and strategic outcome.

“Since then, we’ve been able to strengthen our partnerships, improve our community relationships, launch a marketing and branding campaign and elevate our presence in the community.

“Our debt of gratitude towards the Center for Nonprofit Excellence cannot be overstated. Without their guidance, our doors would be closed!”

- Arthur Cox, Executive Director, St. George’s Scholar Institute

“In many ways, CNPE programs have helped Interfaith Paths to Peace find a healthy direction in its promise to deliver day-to-day interfaith activities. CNPE educational services for our Board members on the life cycle of a non-profit organization, as well as on the role and responsibilities of Board members, have been very helpful. Perhaps the most significant help, though, has been CNPE’s role in my organization’s Strategic Planning Process. In 2013, we made the decision to ask CNPE’s Ed Cortas to guide us through a six-month strategic planning.” process. His guidance has helped us find a strong, positive new direction for years to come.”

- Terry Taylor, Executive Director, Interfaith Paths to Peace

Interfaith Paths to PeaceThe mission of Interfaith Paths to Peace is to foster peace, increase interfaith understanding, and cultivate inter-religious cooperation through educational programs and events. Its vision is to leave a peaceful world.

The Kentucky CenterThe Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts brings the finest in music, dance, theater and more to Kentucky! It is home for The Louisville Orchestra, Kentucky Opera, Louisville Ballet, Stage One and PNC Bank Broadway Across America – Louisville, as well as a host of community theaters and our own Kentucky Center Presents performances.

Community Financial Empowerment Certification on the MoveThe Louisville Metro Department of Community Services mission is to improve the quality of life for all residents with an emphasis on poverty reduction and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in the Louisville Metro Community.

To further that work, it has led and coordinated several transformative initiatives, including Bank on Louisville and the Community Financial Empowerment model, and has positioned our community to be a leader in catapulting our financial literacy proficiency and practice.

“CNPE has been a tremendous partner to the Louisville Metro Department of Community Services in developing and presenting the Community Financial Empowerment Certification program. Through this program, frontline social service staff is trained to approach financial topics more competently and confidently with the people they serve. Without CNPE’s leadership and support through the coordination of program logistics and registration, we would not have been able to make this resource available to our community. Thanks to CNPE’s involvement, over 200 local social service staff have been able to participate in the Community Financial Empowerment Certification program, learn about financial empowerment tools and resources, and practice conversational approaches for helping the people they serve achieve financial stability.”
