Hello everyone,

I hope that you are all enjoying your summertime, and whether you are still in

school or not, I hope that you are finding time to catch up on some self care! I wanted to

take this opportunity to introduce myself and say hello to all of our chapter members in the

West region. I am so proud to have been elected into this position and it is my intention to

ensure that all of our chapters have another successful year! I want to thank our former

Western Regional Director, Kate Toal, for all of her hard work and for helping me transition

smoothly into my new role. I also want to thank all of the ODs/ADs for contacting me to

introduce yourselves and giving me some insight into your programs. I have enjoyed

hearing from you and discovering how I can best support you and your students. Please do

not hesitate to contact me with any questions/concerns you may have, I am here to help.

At our previous conferences, it was noted that members wanted to see an increase

in communication from the Board of Directors. Many students enjoyed the newsletters sent

out for the West last year, which is why I have chosen to continue this project into my term

as well. A National newsletter has also been created where you can follow what the rest of

the board is doing across the country. We hope that these newsletters will be easily

distributed throughout your chapter to your students and faculty to showcase how CNSA

members can become involved on a local, provincial, and national level.

My term thus far has been very busy! Since our first board meetings, I have worked

very hard to introduce myself to our nursing leaders and attend events in order to meet

everyone in person. I have already begun to strengthen current relationships, as well as

form new partnerships. It has been so inspiring to meet many of our current nursing

leaders and hear how much they enjoy getting students involved with their associations. I

look forward to sharing my experiences with you, and I hope to see more nursing students

attend these events with me in the near future. Here is to another great year!

October 23rd-25th, 2015

This year’s Regional Conference will be held at the Crown Isle Resort in beautiful

Courtenay, BC by North Island College. Regional Conference Director, Alex Seeley, and her

team have been hard at work to create an unforgettable event for our members. The theme

is, “Inspire! Advocate! Unleash!” which describes how we as nursing students and future

nurses can inspire each other to advocate for individuals in need, and unleash our power to

work within the political process to bring change. Registration is now open, don’t miss out!

Call for Abstracts: If you have contributed to Nursing research,

education, or leadership, you have the chance to showcase

your scholarly work at this year’s conference. The conference

planning committee are looking for individuals whose work

reflects the theme of this year’s conference. Due date for

abstracts is October, 1st, 2015.

The Day at the

Legislature was

held during

National Nursing

Week in Victoria,

BC. This event

brought together

members of the

Coalition of BC Nursing Associations to network and discuss current nursing issues with

parliamentary members. This coalition of nursing associations represents nurses from four

nursing groups in British Columbia – Nurse Practitioners (BCNPA), Registered Nurses (ARNBC)

and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (ARPNBC) as

well as Nurse Educators (NECBC), and is an

important advocacy group for nursing

throughout BC. We were able to attend an open

forum with the Ministry of Health’s Leadership,

sit in on question period at the Legislature where

Nurses Week was formally acknowledged by the

members, and join an open house with our MLAs.

Curriculum, student practical experiences, and

new grad support were all topics discussed

throughout the day, and we were able to voice

our concerns to the political parties in power.

ARNBC is one of our biggest supporters of nursing

students in the West and we were thrilled to have

five of our board members attend their AGM to

support them. It was inspiring to see other nursing

students in attendance, which shows that student

leaders are becoming more involved with

their professional associations. CNSA was

well represented at this event and we were

able to network with many of our

stakeholders and meet many current

nursing leaders. Most importantly

incoming President, Zak Matieschyn, was

formally voted in to his new role.

students to get involved with ARNBC on

On July 15th, 2014, the Canadian

Nurses Association (“CNA”)

continued to the Canada Not-for-

profit Corporations Act, a transition

which required CNA to make

changes to its By-Laws and

governance processes in order to

ensure it was compliant with the

Act. As part of this process, certain

changes were made to the role and

rights of the CNSA as a Member of

CNA. On continuance, CNSA

became the sole Class B Member of

CNA. As such, CNSA is entitled to

exercise five votes at all meetings

of the Members of CNA. This June, our five Regional Directors and President travelled to

Ottawa to attend the CNA AGM as voting members for the very first time. At this meeting,

our Regional Directors each held a vote, while our President, Dawn Tisdale, was officially

voted onto the CNA board as our Class B Director. Dawn will continue being our voting

representative at all Board meetings for the

remainder of the term.

President, Karima Velji, and

the rest of the board members

in attendance made us feel so

welcome, and we are grateful

for such a warm reception

into the CNA family. If you

choose to work as an RN in

BC, Alberta, or the Yukon upon

graduation, you will automatically become a

member of CNA and will be able to take advantage

of their many member benefits.
