Co-operatives up and down the country are getting involved. All different types — from high street shops to credit unions and housing co-operatives — are set to proclaim their confidence and pride in co-operation and the co-operative alternative. With a turnover of some £29 billion and eleven million members, co-operatives are the largest membership movement in the country, and now want their voice for a more ethical economy heard. Co-operatives UK is already highlighting the co-operative alternative across many sectors of society — from pubs to football, healthcare to agriculture, credit unions to community owned shops. Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK, said:

“Co-operatives Fortnight is a celebration of an alternative economy and a chance for everyone to buy co-operatively, bank co-operatively, invest co-operatively and work co-operatively. As part of the Fortnight, Co-operatives UK will co-ordinate some major activities, and produce a series of national reports, announcements and thought pieces to outline key trends across the co-operative sector, while co-operatives across the UK will be holding events.

The national reports will focus on co-operatives and fairness, co-operation and business and co-operation and neighbourliness. In addition, Co-operatives UK will launch the ‘Co-operative Economy 2010’, to promote the size, scale and reach of the co-operative economy and will work with

partners to produce short reports on co-operation in football, finance and food. The Fortnight includes International Co-operatives Day on 3 July and the UK’s biggest and most influential gathering of co-operatives — Co-operatives 2010 (25-27 June) www.congress.coop — in Plymouth, celebrating the 150th anniversary of co-operation in the city. And across the UK, co-operatives are gearing up for the two-week initiative . . . • To celebrate the start of Co-operatives Fortnight on Saturday 19 June, The Co-operative Membership, South East, is hosting 52 Ways to Change the World (Co-operatively), a fiesta of all things co-operative. This all-day family friendly event, taking place at Westminster Central Hall, right in the heart of London, will include a Co-operative Marketplace as well as speakers, workshops, tastings and demonstrations throughout the day. The marketplace will aim to showcase the huge range of co-operative and mutual organisations

which offer an alternative way of doing things in the UK and around the world. From education and energy to football and food, visitors will be able to find 52 ways (or more) that they can make a co-operative difference. • Co-operation and Mutuality Scotland is holding an event in the Scottish Parliament for the Cross Party Group on Co-operatives and other MSPs. The event, which will take place on 23 June, will showcase the benefits of co-operatives and give MSPs the opportunity to meet co-operative

A co-operative family fun day will be held at Westminster Central Hall on 19 June

Co-operatives 2010 will be one of the high points of the first-ever Co-operatives Fortnight. The UK’s biggest and most influential gathering of co-operatives, will be held in Plymouth between 25 and 27 June and will also cel-ebrate the 150th anniversary of co-operation in the city. Three keynote speakers, Will Hutton, Phillip Blond and Richard Wilkinson, will provide different perspectives on the co-operative alternative. These will be complemented by exhibitions, networking opportunities and thought-provoking workshops on topics including fairness, finance, education, public services and climate change. With a packed agenda of plenaries, workshops and debates designed to appeal to both delegates from co-operatives of all types and sizes and those with an interest in co-operatives and co-operation, there will be plenty to interest. Co-operatives UK Secretary General Ed Mayo said: “We know that co-operatives offer a better alternative, a better way both

economically and socially of doing business, and this is now being recognised across many sectors of society — from pubs to football clubs, healthcare to agriculture, credit unions to community owned shops.” Co-operatives around the world play a major role in helping people out of poverty and providing opportunities and employment for many millions; closer to home, co-operative schools are being rolled out across the country at a tremendous pace. Co-operatives 2010 will examine the latest developments in both of these areas and welcome delegates from co-operative schools to the second Co-operative Schools Conference held as part of Co-operatives 2010. This year Co-operatives 2010 will include the Co-operative Awards and the Co-operative Debate, which gives delegates the chance to shape the co-operative agenda of the future. And Co-operatives Fortnight will be a key feature of the 2010 conference, with a Big Brother style Diary Room at Stand Six for delegates to visit to say what their co-operative is doing!

Westmill Windfarm is holding an open day on 19 June to show how green energy and co-ops work

businesses from across the UK. • HF Holidays — a co-operative holiday business — is offering free tea and cakes in seven country houses across the UK on 27 June. It’s a great opportunity for local co-operatives, small business and residents to see a brilliant co-operative in beautiful settings. • In the East of England, Co-operatives East is combining its AGM on 30 June with “Brag and Brandish” — an event to bring co-operatives from across the region to a networking and trade fair, to “put up a stall, make a splash!” In the South East, Westmill Windfarm Co-operative is holding an open day, while Co-operatives South East is helping by offering up

to 50 co-operatives £100 to help them hold an event.
