CO Spanish Language Arts (CSLA)Fall Field Test

August 25, 2015

BACKGROUND

• Colorado School Law allows for a Spanish Language Arts assessment in 3rd and 4th grades

• Standards Alignment– Previous assessments (Lectura/Escritura) were aligned to the

CO Model Content Standards– New CSLA is aligned to the skills and standards in the CO

Academic Standards (CAS)• Assessment Frameworks

– Test blueprint mirrors the PARCC ELA assessment (4th grade test specifications HERE)

• Goal of Field Test– In Spring of 2016, 4th grade students will be able to

participate in a CO Spanish Language Arts test instead of the PARCC English Language Arts test.

2

WHY 5TH GRADE, NOT 4TH GRADE?

• Beginning of year 5th graders are most similar academically to end of year 4th graders

• 5th graders taking the fall field test provide the best scenario for providing strong, reliable data on the quality and validity of the test items.

3

WHY PARTICIPATION IS SO CRITICAL

Participation this fall ensures that we will have an operational test available to students statewide starting this Spring.

If the state does not get enough participation this fall, it will need to hold another field test in the Spring.

It is unlikely that CO will be granted another federal waiver to prevent double-testing if a field test is required in the Spring.

4

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• PPF1 or Null (current record)• Teacher Designation was ELA-S or ELA-S/E at the end of

4th grade• Student is a Provisional or In-Service EL (current record)• CO Continuous Enrollment Date is within the last five

years (as of 6/30/2015)• Student is in a TNLI or Dual Language School • 5th grader in 2015-16• Did not take CSLA field test in spring 2015
