VARSITY VARSITY 2013

We beat them at home in 2010, we travelled away and beat them in their own back garden in 2011 and 3

certainly was the magic number last year at home in Swansea! BUT WE WANT 4!!

The biggest day in the Swansea Met sporting calendar, VARSITY 2013.

So what is Varsity?

Each year Swansea Met and Trinity St David (Carmarthen) lock horns in a series of sporting events to cele-

brate the sporting talent on both ends. Varsity is a fantastic time of year as both Swansea Met and TSD

students spend an action-packed day supporting and celebrating their respective sports teams. The event

adds more than a little spice to our sporting calendar.

The intense but friendly rivalry between the universities ensures that each match is contested with pas-

sion and has lots of support from the side lines.

This year there will be a record 7 sports matches between Swansea Met and TSD taking place, the side

with the most wins throughout the day will be crowned Varsity 2013 champions and presented the Varsity

Trophy.

Win or Lose, Varsity really brings out what it means to be a part of a university community. This year

brings if possible an even bigger rivalry between Swansea Met and Trinity St David due to the recent mer-

ger.

All though on paper we may now be one University, Varsity 2013 is sure to be a colossal battle to secure

our own identities and above all prove whether Swansea Met or TSD has the sporting bragging rights for

the next year!

The day attracts a large amount of supporters from the both Swansea Met and Trinity, with the 2013 fix-

ture expected to be bigger and better than ever before!!

Varsity 2013 is taking place on Wednesday 20th March.

The Welsh Football Trust runs extensive programmes to help develop football at a grassroots level. These include mini football

and football for different groups, including different ages, genders, disability groups and ethnic minorities. Through our pro-

Welsh Netball

CONTACT

The Starting Out Award is particularly useful for the beginner/inexperienced netball coach. That award is an introduction to

netball coaching, it is not a qualification only a familiarisation award. Welsh Netball advise that you should attend a Starting

Out Award course before entering onto the UKCC ladder.

Welsh Netball want to develop a world-class Netball coach education system that delivers coaches who are fully fit for purpose

in sufficient numbers at all levels for the needs of every player at every stage of their development

Welsh Netball also want to develop a world-class learning environment and support system for the continuously-learning

coach in pursuit of the above. One of the ways we will achieve our vision is by developing a Netball UKCC.

After receiving a grant from Sport Wales, Welsh Netball are now in a position to employ community coaches to go into netball

clubs throughout Wales and help them become the best club that they can be.

Starting Out Coaching Award, Umpire Q Course Award, Umpire Level 1 Course and Umpire Level 2 Course are the foundation

course Welsh Netball deliver.

also exist on the Board for example finance and child welfare. Cricket Wales recognises that Coach Education plays a pivotal

role in the overall development of cricket within the country and will run various courses throughout the winter months of

2012/13 to expand and improve its existing coaching base.

Cricket Wales has spent part of the Summer of 2012 planning 4 New Workshops aimed at providing practical coaching advice

Basketball Wales is the National Governing Body (NGB) of the game of basketball in Wales and has a voluntary Board of Direc-

tors that drives the game forward.

Becoming a coach obviously takes patience, perseverance and a good level of commitment but to coach in Wales today it re-

quires you to gain a certain minimum level of qualification. This is done not to stifle your own personal take on the game but to

ensure that even the newest coaches have a standardised amount of knowledge on the game for the benefit of yourself and

your players.

Getting started couldn't be easier, for the Leaders Award (aimed at U16's) and Level 1 UKCC no prior experience is necessary.

Blogs and Stories Placements

Hannah Phillips—LC2, Swansea

Nick Edwards—Challenger Sports

Ed Humberstone—Punta dive, Ibiza

at www.lsm-society.weebly.com

For my placement I went to the LC. I was already working there so this was paid work do-

ing 40 hours a week rather than just my normal weekend hours. I carried on working on

the same department as usual, but I was given certain tasks that was my responsibility to

make sure that they were completed. By staying in Swansea I saved money and it give

me the opportunity to show my employees what I am capable of doing as a full time em-

ployer but it also help me understand what my strengths and weaknesses are and how to develop

my skills even further in the industry. While working in the LC for placement I really enjoyed it and it

was something that has benefited me for my future.

Video

Blogs

For my placement I spent 4 months out in Ibiza becoming a PADI Dive master. It was probably

the best summer I’ve ever had, I got to meet loads of new people as well as earning a profes-

sional certification. The weather was a nice change to Swansea and the nightlight was incom-

parable, these factors as well as the clear waters and awesome diving made it a great experi-

ence! Throughout the placement I logged over 90 dives and worked all across the island

getting to see more than I could have imagined. One of the highlights has got to be turning 21

out there; we had a great day diving followed by an unforgettable night out. The company

Punta dive were great to work for and I am strongly considering spending another season out

there this summer. I would recommend this placement to students across the whole of the LETS courses

as it will be highly beneficial as there are aspects of all courses.

This summer I went to the USA to work for challenger sports as a soccer coach for 3 months.

These months were by far the best months of my life, the opportunities It gave me were

amazing, to name just a few things of the things I did included; shooting guns, jet skiing,

jumping down waterfalls, baseball games, theme parks and travelling all along the east coast! Chal-

lenger do's: Make the most of your free time, Never turn down an opportunity to do something new,

Always remember to make your camp fun. Challenger don'ts: Be late for meet points or camp, Don't

ever show that your tired or bored (kids won't respond to you!), Be untidy in someone else's home

(mess leads to stress!)

If challenger sports is for you i can guarantee it'll be by far the best summer you'll ever have!
