OSA PENINSULAHome to Half of Costa Rica’s Wildlife Species

Rugged Osa Peninsula juts out into the Pacific Ocean on the southwestern side of Costa Rica. A third of the peninsula is protected by the “biologically intense” Corcovado National Park, one of the few large lowland tropical rainforests in the world to have escaped the ravages of the logging industry. Cabo Matapalo, on the southern tip of the peninsula, attracts surfers from around the world. Hikes into the virgin tropical rainforest invite eco-tourists to see protected species such as: Baird’s tapirs, rare harpy eagles, blue morpho

butterflies, sloths, scarlet macaws, jaguars, and more.

San José (Puerto Caldera), Costa Rica (Embarkation)

DAY 1

Arrive at the airport in San José, Costa Rica and make your way to the port where we’ll board the refined MS Saint Laurent. Gather on deck for cocktails and the sunset as we set sail for the Osa Peninsula.

Osa Peninsula, Costa RicaDAY 2

This morning, we’ll embark on our first Zodiac expedition in the Osa Peninsula, an immense biological reserve with a mix of rocky coves and high canopy forest. The pristine rainforests and the rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula make this region among the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica. National Geographic has called it “the most biologically intense place on Earth.” Local fauna include a few of Costa Rica’s most endangered species: Baird’s tapirs, jaguars, harpy eagles, red-backed squirrel monkeys, and white-lipped peccaries. Watch for skittering water lizards on the stream lets as well as turquoise cotingas, black-cheeked ant-tanagers, and mangrove hummingbirds flashing through the greenery. Back on board this evening, join us for cocktails followed by a festive welcome dinner.

Coiba Island, PanamaDAY 3

Today we’ll call upon 192-square-mile Coiba Island, home to sugary white beaches, clear cyan-hued waters, dense forests, and an abundance of exotic natural wonders. Located about 20 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama, Coiba National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. It includes as many as 38 islands and one of the largest coral reefs on the Pacific coast of the Americas, which teems with whale and tiger sharks, sea turtles, angel rays, and massive schools of fish. From 1919 until 2004 this remote island served as a penal colony with a reputation for brutal conditions, extreme torture, and death. Its dark history inadvertently led to the preservation of the island’s rainforest ecosystem. Today, Coiba is the largest uninhabited tropical forested island in the Americas. Eighty percent of its forests are primary and virtually untouched by humans, making them a haven for birds and mammals found nowhere else on earth, including several species that have largely disappeared from the mainland. Accessible by permit only, you’ll have the chance today to go ashore with your expedition team in search of scarlet macaws, crested eagles, and endemic subspecies such as the Coiba Island howler monkey, the Coiba agouti, and the Coiba spinetail.

Cruising the Colombian CoastDAY 5

Colombia is believed to be the second most bio- diverse country in the world, just after Brazil. About 10 percent of the Earth’s species live here, including nearly 2,000 species of birds and the olinguito, the first new carnivorous species found in the Americas in over 35 years.

Isla Gorgona, ColombiaDAY 6

Just off the Pacific Coast of Colombia, the hilly island of Gorgona features a cloud-shrouded mountain that overlooks deserted beaches and the open sea. The island’s first inhabitants left archaeological remains that date back to 1300 A.D. In the 1700s, the island served as a refuge for pirates and privateers. In the years from 1959-1984 it was used as an Alcatraz-like prison, housing Colombia’s most dangerous criminals. Today, the island is a National Natural Park and ecotourism center. We’ll explore the dense tropical rainforest in search of unique species such as the blue anole lizard, sloths, white- headed capuchins, brown boobies, and red-legged honeycreepers.

Manta, EcuadorDAY 7

Today, we’ll cruise along the coast to Manta, Ecuador. A trading post in pre-Columbian times, Manta is currently known for tuna fishing and tourism. The city’s most visited beaches include El Murciélago, Santa Marianita, San Lorenzo, and Barbasquillo. The nearby town of Montecristi, founded in the early 17th century, is known for its wickerwork weaving and as the original birthplace of the Panama Hat, which, despite its name, was historically produced in Ecuador.

Darién National Park, PanamaDAY 4

After a light breakfast this morning, we’ll embark on an excursion into the Darién jungle, a lush rainforest surrounded by the Sierra de Jungurudo Mountains. Darién is the largest national park in Central America. It includes five distinct wildlife zones and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The native people of the Darién jungle – the semi-nomadic Wounaan and Emberá – decorate their bodies with black geometric tattoos and use dugout canoes to navigate the jungle’s many rivers and streams. During our explorations, we’ll watch for local wildlife, including: weaverbirds, yellow-bellied great kiskadees, red-cheeked woodpeckers, tapirs, sloths, capybaras, and anteaters.

COASTAL CENTRAL & SOUTH AMERICA

“Found in Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park, the blue-footed booby has no natural fear of humans. Its name comes from the Spanish word for clown (bobo), presumably because it is a seabird that is clumsy on land. Its blue feet play an important role in mating rituals.

MACHALILLA NATIONAL PARKAbout

Machalilla National Park was established in 1979 and named for a prehistoric culture that lived in the area as far back as 1800 BC. Nearby archaeological excavations have revealed advanced ceramics techniques and the Machalilla are credited with having invented the stirrup spouted jug. Today, the park encompasses 60,000 hectares, two-thirds of which are tropical dry forest, fog forest, coastal scrub, beaches, islands and islets. The final third is ocean and a popular breeding ground for humpback whales. The islands and shorelines provide fertile feeding for frigates, brown pelicans, waved albatross, and boobies. Inland wildlife include black howler monkeys, poison arrow frogs, armadillos, brocket and white-tail deer, and more than 270 species of birds.

Machalilla National Park, EcuadorDAY 8

This morning we’ll go ashore for an excursion into Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park. Located along the Pacific coast near the fishing village of Puerto Lopéz, the park offers: beaches, fog forest, dry forest, small islands, and two larger islands Salango and Isla de la Plata, named for a legendary hoard of silver left by Sir Francis Drake. In 1990, the park was named an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention. Wildlife includes armadillos, monkeys, and more than 270 species of birds. Machalilla National Park is the only waved albatross habitat outside of the Galapágos Islands.

Cruising the Ecuadorian CoastDAY 9

Humpback whales, found off the coast of Ecuador from June to October, feed in polar waters in the summer and migrate to tropical and subtropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter. Today, we will enjoy cruising and be in the perfect location for spotting this migration along the coast.

Salaverry (Trujillo), Peru (overnight)DAY 10

Located in the Andean foothills, Salaverry is the gateway to two fascinating pre-Inca historical sites. The ancient Chimu capital of Chan Chan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered the largest adobe city in the world. The Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (Temples of the Sun and Moon) were built by the Moche and feature a unique narrative of human sacrifice. Today, we’ll explore the rich tradition, religion, art, agriculture, and architecture of these two sites.

COTTON TOP TAMARIND MONKEY, COLOMBIA

Salaverry, PeruDAY 11

This morning, we’ll complete our excursions to the ancient sites in Salaverry, then set sail in the early afternoon for Lima, Peru.

Cruising the Peruvian CoastDAY 12

Enjoy another beautiful day of cruising along the Peruvian coast, watching for Humboldt penguins, Guanay cormorants, and migrating whales. After an exhilarating day of sailing, we’ll gather on deck for a festive cocktail reception, followed by a farewell dinner.

Lima (Callao), Peru (Disembarkation)DAY 13

After breakfast this morning, you’ll disembark the MS Saint Laurent and make your way to the Jorge Chávez Interational Airport in Lima for your flight home or to the Estelar Miraflores hotel (or similar) for your extended tour of this beautiful country.

Upon arrival in San José (Porto Caldera), Costa Rica, you’ll be met by your guide and board an air-conditioned motorcoach for the 2.5 hour drive to Monteverde’s Hotel Fonda Vela (or similar). After check in, enjoy leisure time, including lunch and dinner on your own. The following morning, you’ll be greeted by your guide and begin the day with a walking tour (about two hours) in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which spans over 10,500 hectares and ranges in altitude from 3,900 - 5,250 feet. The reserve consists of six ecological zones boasting extremely high biodiversity, including the largest number of orchids in the world. After our walk, we’ll board the ferry for a scenic one-hour cruise across Arenal Volcano Lake. Upon arrival in Arenal, we will check in to the Arenal Springs Resort & Spa (or similar). Enjoy free time in the resort and lunch and dinner on your own. The next day, we’ll make our way to Tabacón Hot Springs, a “hot” river that flows through lush tropical gardens, pools, and waterfalls. The water is heated by magma in the earth’s interior, percolates through the mineral-rich crust, then rises to the surface. You’ll have 1.5 hours to swim and soak in these soothing waters. Then, we’ll gather for lunch at the local Ave del Paraiso restaurant. In the afternoon, we’ll drive to Arenal Volcano National Park for a guided walk (1.5 hours). Known worldwide for its near-perfect cone shape, Arenal Volcano reaches 5,437 feet at its peak. Once one of the most active volcanoes in the world, an explosion in 1968 destroyed all vegetation that covered the cone and buried three villages. The volcano is now in a resting stage. Next, we’ll drive through the town of La Fortuna and stop in Sarchí to visit with local artists who are renowned for their fine woodwork and elaborately painted oxcarts. Enjoy dinner on your own before checking into the Real Intercontinental San Jose Hotel (or similar). After breakfast the next morning, make your way to the airport for your flight home or to the port for the cruise portion of your vacation.

The next morning, you’ll be greeted by your guide and embark on your half-day tour of Lima. The Incas built Huaca Pucllana in the second century as the ceremonial and administrative center of Ñaupallaqta, or Sacred Town. From there, we will drive to the Historic Center of Lima (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), passing Plaza San Martin before stopping at Plaza Mayor for photos of the traditional architecture, Government Palace, and City Hall. Next, we will take a guided tour of the Cathedral of Lima and visit either its Religious Art Museum or the Santo Domingo Convent. Then we’ll stop for a local specialty snack before touring the San Francisco Monastery and its underground catacombs, which served as a burial place until 1808 and as a secret passageway to the tribunal during the Peruvian Holy Inquisition. Rediscovered in 1943, the catacombs contain as many as 25,000 crypts and have survived several earthquakes. Continuing on, we’ll stop at Larco Herrera Museum to view a private collection of pre-Columbian art and visit the vault that safeguards precious pieces of gold, silver, and semiprecious stones. Finally, we’ll stop at El Parque del Amor, a beautiful lookout on the cliffs of Miraflores overlooking the Pacific Ocean, before returning to the hotel. You’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening free to enjoy an optional tour, such as Taste of Lima, and sample Lima’s many riches, including world-class restaurants and lively nightclubs. After breakfast at the hotel the next morning, enjoy sightseeing on your own until it’s time to make your way to the airport for your flight home.
