Happy New Year to everyone! Hope you had a won-derful holiday season. We kick off the New Year with a tribute to Dave Mills in this edition. He was a real sup-porter of our club and he will be sorely missed.

As other regions in Zone 8, we are going to try some-thing new this year for event registration when money must be collected in advance. We are going to use MotorSportReg.com (MSR). We have been using MSR for our track events for several years now, and it works great. The fi rst event using MSR will be our annual Pozo Saloon Tour on February 11. Keep an eye out for further announcements concerning the Pozo Saloon Tour sign-up dates. The Holiday Party last month was terrifi c, and we had a good turnout, thanks to Sanja’s hard work. We had a band for the event and many members got up and danced too! We honored Dave Mills and Walt Brans-come of Santa Barbara Auto Group. See the pictures in this issue.

Jack Ravin has volunteered to handle the name badge duties previously done by Dave Mills. If you need a new badge or are a new member to our club, see or get in touch with Jack to order your name badges.

Please continue supporting our club by attending our events. Don’t forget that our Board meetings are the fi rst Wednesday of every month at San Luis Country Club. Please feel free to attend.

See ya later! Ken

Dave Mills – Mr. Porsche Enthusiast

If you joined CCCR before you got a chance to get to know Dave Mills, you missed one of the most delightful CCCR members, ever. Dave was not only Mr. CCCR. He was Mr. PCA. He was Mr. Porsche Enthusiasm. In 1974 he was award-ed PCA (National) Enthusiast of the Year, and his life bore that out until the end. In fact, there really is no end to Dave. His ener-gy, joy, love, and spirit lives on in our club.

To many of us who joined CCCR in the last fi ve years, Dave was known as “the badge man.” He was one of the fi rst persons most of us met in the club, usually at a monthly breakfast, with a big smile, a warm wel-come, and an order form for a CCCR name badge That was just a small sample of Dave’s passion to get new Porsche owners to become a part of the Porsche passion. And yet, Dave’s humble service as “the badge man” pales in his long and very sig-nifi cant history with Porsche and PCA on a national and international level.

To me, Dave was just a good guy, always eager to help, always with a smile and a fun sense of humor. He never wore his status on his sleeve. I’ve known Dave since 2011, three of those years as CCCR president, and just recently I became aware of his full his-tory with PCA. I’m going to let others who knew him more in depth tell his story. But I knew Dave well enough to appreciate that the details of his life as a Porsche enthusiast are of little surprise to me.

For certain, Dave’s wife, Dalna, and his two daughters, Lori and Audrey, will miss him dearly. And his Porsche family will miss him for a wonderful life of support and con-tagious passion.

Chuck Jennings

Dave Mills joined PCA in 1969 as a member of Mon-terey Bay Region. After that he belonged to eight other regions, including CCCR three times. He served in several offi ces in those regions, including President of both CCCR and Germany Region. He was the principal mover in the resurrection of Germany Region in 1973, for which he was presented the very prestigious Lazar-Blanchard tro-phy as PCA Enthusiast of the Year in 1974. He served as PCA Zone 10 Representative upon his return to the United States in 1978. He permanently retired to CCCR, and served on the Board of Directors for many years as Activi-ties Chair, Membership Chair and President.

He and his wife, Dalna, have served the CCCR region very well and with great passion. As the Activities Chair, Dave always planned some very fun and exciting outings for the club. I will remember watching him at the auto-cross in his Boxster doing a great job of avoiding those orange cones.

I will miss Dave as a friend, mentor, PCA member, fellow Porsche owner…..and as a fellow ukulele musician.

Bob Kitamura

Here, Dave looks like he’s giving an in-spirational talk, which he could have with grace and style. But he’s actually awarding prizes for the the places of a gimmick rally to the Parkfi eld Cafe in 2012. Dave was a master at putting together tours and rallies.

Dave and Dalna at the Holiday Dinner Party in 2015. That’s a very familiar smile likely accompanied by a hearty and infectious laugh.

Dave was always a great help at the DE’s in Buttonwillow or the autocrosses at Santa Maria.

An Interview with Dalna MillsEditor’s Note: On December 22, I interviewed Dalna Mills, widow of Dave Mills. Audrey Mills, Dave’s oldest daughter, sat in and added several memories. The interview was both informative and uplifting. There was a lot of laughter, just as Dave would have wanted. The following are excerpts and a few paraphrases of that interview.

CJ: Dalna, when was Dave born?

DM: July 13, 1936

CJ: And where was he born?

DM: He was born at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. His daddy was with the Calgary Band. He played the clarinet with the Galgary Band.

CJ: Dave played the ukulele and he sang, right?

DM: Yes.

CJ: Tell me a little bit about that. He sang with a group here in town?

DM: Several.

CJ: And so he grew up in Iowa?

DM: He was an Air Force brat. His dad broke off when the Air Force broke off from the Army. He took a cut in rank to go into the fi nance department. He had to prove to the Army that they had $100 to live off of until his rank in the Air Force could come in. So, then his fi rst assignment was on the East Coast.

CJ: So, they moved around a lot?

DM: Not as much as some people might have. But he was there, and then they were stationed in Denver, Colorado. And the war ended at that point, and he was sent over to occupied Japan. He was there for a year, and then they went over on a boat and joined him. And they went to the Air Force base in Tampa, and David was there from the 8th grade until he was a junior in high school.

CJ: And Dave was career Army, right?

DM: Yes.

CJ: How old was he when he joined the Army?

DM: Twenty-two.

CJ: And did he go to school before that?

DM: Yes. He went to college. He graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. He went to Texas A&M for one wild semester, and then went back to LSU. And after fi ve years of college he did graduate.

CJ: What did he get his degree in?

DM: Business. And then he got his commission in the Army. He was in the Signal Corps in the Army. I caught up with him sometime in college . . . We got married in 1960, so he must have graduated in ’59.

CJ: So, I assume you moved around a lot with his career in the Army?

DM: Well, we did. We lived in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. And then we lived in Pirmasens, Germany. And Rock Island, Illinois. And then he went back for advanced training at Fort Monmouth, again. And then he went to Viet Nam, and, I and the kids went home to live with Mama. And then we were at Fort Ord, California. And that’s where we fi rst got to be in the Porsche club in Monterey. And then he went back to Viet Nam a second time, and I stayed in Pacifi c Grove. And then he came back and was stationed at Camp Roberts. The Army had a satellite station there . . . and so then we were in the Porsche club here. Then we went back to Frankfurt, Germany. And they had a reduction in the force, be-cause they didn’t have the Viet Nam war anymore. David was given $10,000 and a handshake . . . That would have been in ’74. But we weren’t ready to leave Germany yet . . . And so we stayed and he became a systems analyst for American Express . . . and I had to re-invent myself. I had been teach-ing at a pre-school, and so I went and got a regular teaching job, and all of a sudden I was teaching fi fth grade.

Page 11: Coastal January 2017 aire...Jan 01, 2017  · 3-11 9:00 AM Breakfast Far Western Nipomo Chuck Jennings 805-459-7416 3-18 9:00 AM 356ers Breakfast Scotty’s Martin Howell 805-544-5389

11The Coastalaire January 2017

Lori and Audrey were in 9th and 7th grades, and they decided they wanted to come home and be Americans . . . So we had bailed up bails of money and thought we would spend it by buying into a Porsche-fi x-‘em-up business in San Luis Obispo. We looked all over the state before we bought into Precision Engineering. We almost got into cahoots with Jon Milledge . . . but we put the money into Precision Engineering . . . it was located down by the Mustang Bar on Higuera.

When that didn’t work out, David got a job with the lottery, when it came in, driving a little truck – he was like the service rep man – that guy that put the papers in the machine, or when the machine didn’t work he would drag it out and stick another one in, and drive the broken one over to where they fi x them. Oh! He loved that! He loved being a service writer because he could chat it up with everybody. And then he got a promotion . . . and we moved to Illinois where he didn’t fi x the machines, but told others to fi x them. Then he got another promotion to Southern California where he told people to tell people to tell people to fi x the machines. And we moved to Fremont, California, but the company downsized, and we decided to come home (San Luis Obispo).

He was temporary Director of United Way for a short time. And then he worked for a manufactur-ing company in Santa Maria . . . and he became a systems analyst again. And then at 62, he retired.

CJ: So, everywhere you went, you were in-volved in the Porsche Club?

DM: Yes, but when we were in Germany and he was doing the corporate life, his Porsche got stolen at his mother’s house, and we didn’t have a Porsche until we got back here.

CJ: So, tell me about his Porsches. The fi rst one was a 356?

DM: Yes. So before we moved from Germany, the kids asked “How will we know when Daddy is really home from Viet Nam? What’s it going to be like?” I said, “What do you think it’s going to be like?” And they said, “We think he will sit around and sit around and sit around until he gets underneath his Porsche, and his feet will stick out the side of the bottom of the car.” And David came home, and he sat around and sat around until he couldn’t stand it any more, and he had to go stick his head into the Porsche. At which point we said, “Yea! He’s home!” So we knew our daddy was home. It was the 356.

This car (356) was homicidal and sui-cidal. When David made Major, he was so excited that he went out and bought the fi rst Porsche he could buy off

of any parking lot. It actually listed to one side. But that wasn’t important. It was a Porsche, and it had a convertible top. But it burned up a couple of times. It rolled over a couple of times. It shredded a racing fan belt. It blew out tires that were perfectly fi ne. It ate a shop rag from Precision Engineering. It was terrible! The happiest day of my life was when some stupid per-son bought it, and I knew we were going to Germany, not be found. We were just hoping it would get around the corner before it caught on fi re. We would take it into Fred, and beg him not to throw dirt on it again – to put out the next fi re.

Page 12: Coastal January 2017 aire...Jan 01, 2017  · 3-11 9:00 AM Breakfast Far Western Nipomo Chuck Jennings 805-459-7416 3-18 9:00 AM 356ers Breakfast Scotty’s Martin Howell 805-544-5389

12The Coastalaire January 2017

CJ: Tell me about reviving the Porsche Club in Germany.

DM: Well, we couldn’t wait to go over there and be members of the Porsche Club. That would have been ’71 in Frankfurt. We found some informa-tion about some people who had been in the club. We met with them and they became our very best friends. So we decided here’s what we are go-ing to do to bring back the club. The club had a mimeograph machine – one of those that you had to crank by hand, and you got high on the fumes from the fl uid – and we put fl yers of invitations on the Porsches with green license plates. We met in a castle house, and there were about seven of us, waiting nervously, and a few showed up, and then a few more, and we built it up from there.

And then Dave got this award.

CJ: And then you bought the 914?

DM: Well, no, we then bought Taffy, a white 912. We bought the car in Switzerland. And this was the best Porsche we ever had, and we named her Taffy. And she just loved to go 110 mile per hour. And the reason our children are not 5’10”is because they were raised in the back of these cars on the auto-bahn at 110 miles per hour. We bought one of those camping wracks that mounted on the top of the car, and we had our tent, those square things with all our food, and all our camping gear – we traveled all over Europe to the F-1 races – we were like a clown car. And we would get to a border crossing – they were checking all the GI’s cars looking for drugs – and we would say, “Oh! Lord! Please! Please! We’ll never get all this back together.”

We brought Taffy back to the U.S., but she was never the same. She got damaged on a special ship from Belgium. We think the battery died, and she wouldn’t start, and so when they rolled her out of the ship, they forgot to set the brake, and she slammed under something. She was still a good car, and we loved her, but she was never the same.

13The Coastalaire January 2017

CJ: When did you come to the Central Coast and become members of CCCR?

DM: We were members of CCCR before we went back to Germany. We were members when David was assigned to Camp Roberts but we still did things with the Monterey club, too.

CJ: And then you went back to Germany.

DM: And we had a big region, and when we came back here, our region (CCCR) was doing fi ne. He’s been President at least twice, and I’ve been Presi-dent once.

CJ: You had a 914, and after the 914 you had a Boxster?

DM: We had Taffy a long, long time. And then we get the 914, and then we got the Boxster S. That was just a little too much car. And then we got the blue Boxster and then the silver Boxster. He like that silver Boxster best . . . The 914 we had com-pletely restored.

CJ: I know how much Dave loved to interact with people. I think of him as “the name-badge man” because he would meet with all the new mem-bers. It was perfect for him. He was like a recruiter. Where did his love affair with Porsche begin?

DM: Well, I think he has always been a sports car guy. His daddy had a Triumph TR-3 he bought in India. His dad brought it back in the bomb bay of a big airplane. He gave that car to David when he was at LSU. He was driving through southern Louisiana like the speed of light, and he was ar-rested. The arresting offi cer asked him, “Now how fast were you going, son?” And David said, “Well, I don’t know, sir. My daddy just gave me this car, and it says kilometers. And I don’t think I can fi gure out what kilometers are against miles. but I was going this many kilometers an hour.” And the offi cer said, “That’s OK, son. You don’t have to stay here any longer, boy.” This guy had never heard of kilome-ters either, so David got off on that one. He later rolled that one over. So that TR was the impetus for his love of sports cars. But he didn’t get a Porsche (356) until he made Major while in Monterey.

The happiest days of my life were when David and I were in the car, and we were going somewhere. He would drive, and I would navigate, and we’re just go-ing somewhere. It didn’t matter where.

In 2011, Dave Mills was the Activities Director for CCCR. To give you a bit of the spirit of Dave’s contribution to our club, below is the last article he wrote for Coastalaire. Note that he signed the article with a lowercase “d”, perhaps appropriate for a fellow with an unassuming ego.

Much thanks to Bob Kitamura for sharing this with us.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM YOUR HUMBLE SER-VANT, THE ACTIVITIES CHAIR

Just back from the LA Auto Show. LOTS of electrics and hybrids--even a couple of Porsche hybrids (Cayennes only--no 918 Spyders in sight--again), and, unbelievably, NO TESLA! There was, however, in the “exotic” hall--where the Tesla SHOULD have been, a Czech Republic (!) electric sort of Smart Car, with huge gull-wing doors, called a “Doking”. Imagine that--a Doking--right in the middle of all those Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Aston Martins, Morgans, and Loti (but no Tesla!).

The Porsche exhibit was, as it was last year, a sea of production cars, including a couple of 991s, with nary an exotic anywhere. It looked a lot like a lot--a sales lot! The cars were gorgeous, though; I’ll bet there were plenty of converts among the looky-loos!

I wore my bright yellow Rennsport Reunion Staff shirt, but attracted the attention of only one other PCA-er--a member from somewhere around Long Beach. He had not been particularly entranced by contacts with his local PCA region(s), and had not been attracted to any events. When I told him how active WE are, and how to fi nd us on the Web, he vowed to visit us when he gets up this way (which he actually does on occasion).

Speaking of Rennsport, Speedvision aired a report on it a couple weeks ago, with lots of PCA cover-age. That should get us some new members!

Upcoming events: the Holiday party is next--Sun-day, December 4th. Hope you’ve signed up. Sanja and Marla promise an evening nothing short of spectacular! January 22nd takes us again to Pozo, bringing back the historic January date (see Page __ for full info). We’ll head to Parkfi eld in February--it’s changed ownership, but they prom-ise we won’t be disappointed. March 11th will fi nd us “Springing Forward” into Lynn Ayers’ rally school, bringing an end to my reign as Activities Chair. Three years was suffi cient. The new guy (gal?) will, no doubt, keep us rolling through the Central Coast hills and curves, chowing down at some of our best restaurants, and showing off our terrifi c Porsches.

As of this writing, the board hasn’t divvied up its various duties, but there’s new blood up there in Boardland, and new blood brings new thoughts, especially about activities. That doesn’t mean ONLY the board’s thoughts--we still need YOURS! We still want to know what YOU want to do. So--when the new AC is introduced at the Holiday Party, swarm around him/her and pelt him/her with your ideas.

Speaking of the Holiday Party, Dalna and I will actually be able to attend this year. In years past, we always had our SLO Vocal Arts concert on the same night (couldn’t convince our director other-wise). So--see you all there!

And Happy Holidays!

dave

The 2016 CCCR Holiday Dinner Party was dedicated to the great memories of Dave Mills. Jon Milledge gave a joyful heartfelt tribute to Dave, with some great stories about him that made us smile and chuckle. At his conclusion, Jon reminded us that Dave would have wanted us all to have “ a lot of fun”. And in Dave’s honor, we certainly did.

With over 85 in attendance, a six-member bad, and a dance fl oor, the banquet room at the SLO Country Club was packed nearly to capacity. The country club chef got a big round of applause for a gourmet’s delight dinner, and the service was fantastic.

Ken Finney was master of ceremonies and directed the evening’s door-prize lottery with very much appreciated gifts from Porsche Santa Barbara and SGS motorsports. Walt and Rebecca Branscome ar-ranged and donated at least eight large gift baskets on behalf of Porsche Santa Barbara. SGS Motors-ports donated fi ve large offi cial Porshce 2017 cal-endars, several Porsche car keychains, and a basket of car care products. Also included were other Porsche memorabilia and bottles of local wine. The lottery process brought on a lot of cheering and enthusiastic applause.

A large framed copy of a photograph of Dave Mills as seen on the cover of this issue of Coastalaire was presented to Dave’s widow, Dalna, and one of his daughters, Lori. Also honored for his generous and unfailing support of CCCR events was Walt Branscome.

Honoring the wishes of Dave Mills for us to have a lot of fun, the evening continued and apexed with some exuberant dancing to some approprate “old-ies but goodies”.

Our most appreciative thanks to Sanja Brewer for months of planning and putting together another wonderful evening of celebration of the Holiday Season and the joy of our club.

21The Coastalaire January 2017

Season’s greetings fellow Porsche Pushers! Wishing all of you a Happy New Year full of health and lots of miles on your Porsche.

Before I dig into this month’s questions I would just like to say a few words about the passing of Dave Mills. I really can’t remember when Dave started coming to my shop. Certainly back when I was over on Capitolio Way. What I do remember is no mat-ter what event I made it to, there with a smile and a greeting would be Dave and nearby somewhere help-ing would be Dalna. Often he was on the club board, and even when he wasn’t he would be there helping out. Always up-beat and ready for a fun day running our Porsches. I will surely miss you and your energy Dave.

OK, on to our questions. CCCR member Bob Bruington was asking about how to know what direction to move your sway bars if you are lucky enough to have adjustable ones on your Porsche. This will be a much shortened version that should help the weekend warrior out with just himself and car.

Once you have gotten your tire pressures stable you need to ask yourself which end of the car seems to be giving up its grip fi rst and what type of turns are you going to be dealing with that day – fast , medium or slow? Generally speaking, you should adjust the opposite end of the one that is slid-ing fi rst. If the car is oversteering try tightening up the front sway bar. If you have understeer tighten up the rear sway bar. By that I mean to move the drop link closer to the actual sway bar. Make the adjust-ment the same amount side-to-side and make it big enough so that you can actually feel it on a test run (maybe 1/4” at at time).

Three things can happen with a change: 1) better, 2)worse, ) no change. Don’t be afraid to make a move and then either keep going in that direction until the balance starts to shift in the opposite direction.

The other thing to think about is what type of turns dominate the track: fast, medium, or slow. For example, Willow Springs has lots of fast, long turns. Your car’s suspension has to work hard in those turns. If you have adjustable spoilers/ splitters, add these handling devices to the mix. At Willow you will probably have understeer in the ‘Omega’ por-tion of the track. Live with it. Laguna Seca would be mostly slow to medium turns that are short. You would want to make the car work the best for turns 3, 4, 5, 6 and then turn 2, the corkscrew, 11. The fast turns will be less affected by suspension and more by aerodynamics.

All of this is based on your already having your drop links in a no-pre-load condition sitting on the ground or on the alignment rack with the car corner balanced

and aligned. At the track, work with what you have and can manage by yourself or a buddy. Remember this is the short answer. There are plenty of books out there that go into this with much more detail. Don’t be afraid to ask Jon Miledge if he is at the track and not looking too busy. He is an amazing chassis engineer, not to mention engine, etc.

The second question was in regards to upgrading 996, 997, Boxster, Cayman horns. Apparently the member wants modern horns to sound more like the air cooled models. The fi rst thing to ask yourself is are both horns working? In the shop we often see one of the horns burned out (how much honking are people doing?) The wires to the horns are not a very large capacity I would hesitate getting too crazy with larger horns with greater electrical draw. The stock wiring has a special molded end to only fi t the OEM horns as well, and you will have to modify this carefully. You need to be cautious with modern car wiring.

As always, thanks for the questions.

Ober and out.
