4New York CaresCoat Drive Report 2015

During the 2015 Coat Drive, New York Cares collected more than 100,000 winter coats, a number never before reached in the drive’s 27 years except in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

We have the entire city to thank for answering the call for coats, with special gratitude to the NYC business community for its unprecedented support of the Coat Drive.

Collecting 100,000 coats enabled us to distribute coats

earlier in the new year, delivering 70,000 coats before a blizzard

hit NYC in January 2016. Similar to recent years, New York Cares again received requests for more than 100,000 coats from shelters, community centers, and social service agencies serving NYC’s homeless and low-income residents. In a typical year, we collect only 75,000 coats, so we knew there was a critical gap of approximately 25,000 men, women, and children who would go without warm winter jackets if we didn’t increase our collection numbers. Through an influx of coats and monetary donations, we were able to meet the immense need this year.

New York Cares Collects 100,000 Coats During the 27th Annual Coat Drive

Not only was New York Cares able to provide warmth to more New Yorkers in need, but the increase in coats enabled us to distribute coats earlier in the new year. By the time a blizzard hit NYC on January 23rd, 2016, we had already given away 70,000 winter coats.

New York City businesses led the charge in meeting the 100,000-coat goal. KKR, Bloomberg LP, Neuberger Berman, the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association, Halstead Property, Tishman Speyer, and others donated coats, set up collection sites, and donated money toward the purchase of coats. For more detail on how our top corporate contributors helped us meet the need for coats, see page six.

Individual New Yorkers, in addition to dropping off coats at public collection sites, also ran their own personal coat drives among colleagues, friends, or family. In 2015, more than 1,000 residents registered their own drives benefiting New York Cares, a 20% increase over last year.

Thanks to New Yorkers banding together and to the business world for recognizing an opportunity to serve its stakeholders. We are grateful to all those who rallied to make sure that 100,000 requests for coats were fulfilled.

How the Coat Drive Works

During the 2015 Coat Drive, New York Cares collected 100,000 winter coats. Except for 2012 when Hurricane Sandy struck, we’ve been able to keep more New Yorkers warm this year than we ever have in the past. Here’s how it happened:

Page 6: Coat Drive Report 2015 - New York Cares€¦ · would go without warm winter jackets if we didn’t increase our collection numbers. Through an influx of coats and monetary donations,

Bloomberg LP rallied their employees to start their annual Coat Drive early this year to make sure we had a good stock of coats by Thanksgiving. Bloomberg pledged to match donations on behalf of every employee who donated a coat or made a cash donation toward the purchase of a new coat. The remarkable generosity of Bloomberg and its employees generated 11,400 warm winter coats, many of which were donated to The Bowery Mission, The River Fund New York, Baby Buggy, HELP USA, and Hetrick-Martin Institute.

Tishman Speyer played a major role in helping us break the 75,000 barrier by purchasing 10,000 new coats for the drive. Even beyond Tishman Speyer’s remarkable generosity, the firm collected coats in more than 20 of its New York City-based buildings, greatly expanding the drive’s collection effort.

Homeless shelters from across the city request thousands of coats for their residents each winter. This year we received 4,000 coat requests for children living in the shelter system. Upon hearing this, Neuberger Berman led the charge to ensure that no child living in a homeless shelter would go without a warm coat this winter. In addition to donating coats, Neuberger employees made generous donations to purchase enough coats to meet the full demand for children in New York City shelters.

Discovering that we collect 75,000 coats in a typical year, KKR took a hands-on approach to helping us meet the 100,000 coat requests that we received from the community. In February 2015, a team of operating professionals embarked on an extensive pro bono engagement to improve the Coat Drive’s operations and collection efforts. KKR went even further in supporting the drive by donating over 4,000 coats, enlisting other companies to participate in the drive, and providing a generous monetary donation to support the drive.

Going Above and Beyond

Coat Drive SponsorsTo collect and distribute more than 100,000 coats over the course of just seven weeks, New York Cares relies heavily on the generosity of the event’s sponsors for their financial and in-kind support. We extend our thanks to the following companies and organizations:

New York City’s corporate community always plays a sizable role in the Coat Drive and 2015 was no different. This year, four firms made extraordinary contributions to help us meet the 100,000 coat requests we received from New Yorkers in need. We are deeply grateful and honored to share their stories here.

Bringing in the CoatsWe had a few partners collect thousands of coats by setting up accessible collection sites, spreading the word to customers and residents, or running popular one-day collection events:

AmbassadorsNew York Cares could not staff the numerous collection sites, promotional events, and coat sorting projects that take place throughout the Coat Drive without the help of the following dedicated volunteers, who serve as Coat Drive Ambassadors:

Enhancing the Coat Drive ExperienceThe following companies donated their services to make the Coat Drive run more efficiently and effectively:

In addition to setting up c o l l e c t i o n

sites in each building it manages, Vornado also donated warehouse space from which we sort and distribute coats to the community.

W h e t h e r it be from

Grand Central in the mornings or from a collection event in the Bronx, Junkluggers helped move donated coats to our warehouse throughout the drive.

Flatrate picked up coats weekly from every Queens Library branch, helping us keep transportation costs to a minimum.

With many coats coming from enthusiastic New Yorkers who run their own personal drives, Lousch created an interactive online toolkit to help those Coat Drive champions bring

in even more coats from their friends, family, and co-workers.
