Coates, Cambridgeshire, Holy Trinity Churchyard. This new document adds to the plot maps I drew in 2015, having surveyed the churchyard from 2012 to 2014. My aim has always been to discover where my relatives are buried since fewer than I would wish actually have grave markers. This has caused me to ‘fill in the blanks’. I was lucky enough to see the church plot maps some years ago and so I have eventually been able to identify which persons many of the unmarked plots hold. I have marked the positions of the graves I have discovered ‘on top’ of my previous plot maps. This has taken a considerable amount of time and, by working out the years when each portion of the churchyard was being used, I have done my best to allocate graves to the departed. Whilst some errors are likely to have been made, I have not used any guesswork. However, even with the greatest care no guarantees can be made as to accuracy. Plot numbers As I explained in my original booklet of Memorial Inscriptions, the plot numbering system is my own and reflects the route I took when originally photographing all the headstones. Short of renumbering everything, I had to make the best of a bad job and find solutions to the problems caused by my initial inexperience. As a result I have needed to use decimals to label plots which occur between whole numbers. Sometimes these are those such as 147, 147.1 and 148. At other times I have had to use 694, 694.01, 694.02 etc. I also thought it best to omit some numbers and start from a fresh point, especially those from 900 onwards. A full listing of all the burials at Coates up to 1950 is available in .pdf form at https://www.cfhs.org.uk/. It is known that many children were buried in unmarked graves and a memorial has been erected to them (see left). I have been able to discover where some of these children are, but clearly not all. No handwritten plot map was available for one area of the churchyard (it may turn up at some stage) and the early maps are incomplete or scantily labelled with just surnames. Completed during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, I am unlikely to revise this again but do contact me if you discover a major problem. I hope this proves useful to you. Coates, Cambridgeshire, Holy Trinity Churchyard.

This new document adds to the plot maps I drew in 2015, having surveyed the churchyard from

2012 to 2014. My aim has always been to discover where my relatives are buried since fewer

than I would wish actually have grave markers. This has caused me to ‘fill in the blanks’.

I was lucky enough to see the church plot maps some years ago and so I have eventually been able to identify

which persons many of the unmarked plots hold. I have marked the positions of the graves I have discovered ‘on

top’ of my previous plot maps. This has taken a considerable amount of time and, by working out the years when

each portion of the churchyard was being used, I have done my best to allocate graves to the departed. Whilst

some errors are likely to have been made, I have not used any guesswork. However, even with the greatest care

no guarantees can be made as to accuracy.

Plot numbers

As I explained in my original booklet of Memorial Inscriptions, the plot numbering

system is my own and reflects the route I took when originally photographing all

the headstones. Short of renumbering everything, I had to make the best of a bad

job and find solutions to the problems caused by my initial inexperience. As a result I have needed to use decimals to label

plots which occur between whole numbers. Sometimes these are those such as 147, 147.1 and 148. At other times I have had

to use 694, 694.01, 694.02 etc. I also thought it best to omit some numbers and start from a fresh point, especially those from

900 onwards.

A full listing of all the burials at Coates up to 1950 is available in .pdf form at https://www.cfhs.org.uk/. It is known that many

children were buried in unmarked graves and a memorial has been erected to them (see left). I have been able to discover

where some of these children are, but clearly not all. No handwritten plot map was available for one area of the churchyard (it

may turn up at some stage) and the early maps are incomplete or scantily labelled with just surnames.

Completed during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, I am unlikely to revise this again but do contact me if you discover a major

problem. I hope this proves useful to you.
